You'll probably get people calling for the League Cup to be scrapped again, that is always the first point of call when things get in the way of the big clubs making money.Just you wait - come the middle of next prem season, Chelsea and Manchester City will start bleating on about how their players are exhausted, play too many games and need an extended rest!
And the transfer window is closing for a week due to this?!
No interest, not even sure what it's supposed to be!
Gianni Infantino’s latest route to more money for himselfNo interest, not even sure what it's supposed to be!
I'll be avoiding it , it holds no interest for me, its in the same bracket as the Hundred in cricket, and any form of egg chasing for meI understand Ch5 will broadcast around half the matches.
Anybody else watching? Following a club in the tournament?
Any predicted cup-sets?
I must admit, I hadn't put 2 and 2 together and was wondering about the stop-start transfer window! And the transfer window is closing for a week due to this?!
Would make more sense for the competition to only allow players registered prior to X date to play. Everyone else can then get on with their transfer business while this non-event takes place.I must admit, I hadn't put 2 and 2 together and was wondering about the stop-start transfer window!
I still can't actually work out why it opened early because of this (I can't believe that clubs would be signing players especially to play in it), mind you...
Apparently the reason for the week break in the transfer window (when the competition itself is 4 weeks long) is that the summer transfer window *has* to be 12 weeks. If it had been 13 weeks then obviously the skies would have fallen in and the antichrist would have taken charge of a major western nation...![]()
That is far too sensible!Would make more sense for the competition to only allow players registered prior to X date to play. Everyone else can then get on with their transfer business while this non-event takes place.
When the winners of the tournament get $125m prize money on top of the ≈$25m European teams get just for showing up, you can understand why Real Madrid were willing to spaff €10m on getting Alexander-Arnold out of his contract a month early. Crazy stuff. FIFA are claiming they won't make a penny from the farce, instead "all revenues will be distributed to club football", whatever that means.I still can't actually work out why it opened early because of this (I can't believe that clubs would be signing players especially to play in it), mind you...

There's a separate pot of $250m, which yes will go to corrupt FAs in the developing world to definitely fund grassroots football and certainly not to fund Rolex purchases."all revenues will go in prize money to the "big" clubs taking part, or used as soft power payments to FAs around the world that keep the FIFA leadership in place"
A tournament that no one asked for, was tricky to sell to the broadcasters and will only be watched by those who have a club side in it. FIFA's attempts to generate some funds outside of a WC year saw them come up with this.
If I was a player for one of the big European sides, I'd go on strike. I'd say 'I'm paid enough, I play enough games, my schedule is entirely dictated by League, Cup, UEFA-related and international games and you decide that my June and July in a non-tournament year now has to see me available to play? f**k that.'
Infantino is worse than Blatter and I never thought that was possible. I long for the days for some of the FAs to get some balls and just leave FIFA and start up their own governing body.
No broadcaster wanted anything to do with it, then on 4th December it is revealed that DAZN (who are owned by the Saudi's) have paid 1 billion dollars to show it.A tournament that no one asked for, was tricky to sell to the broadcasters and will only be watched by those who have a club side in it. As by magic, on 12th December, FIFA announce Saudi as the hosts of the 2034 World Cup.
Nothing dodgy about any of it though.
I don’t think they are I thought a company called Access Industries did, owned by Len Blavatnik.I did not know the Saudi's owned DAZN!
Wonder if our own Robyn Cowen will be covering the tournament? God, she was so well supported here with all that positive energy applied.
Apologies, been away for a while.
My mistake, they aren’t fully owned by the Saudi’s but the Saudi government do have a minority stake in the company.I don’t think they are I thought a company called Access Industries did, owned by Len Blavatnik.
That's the exact money that FIFA were wanting for the TV Rights! Luckily for FIFA the country that wanted to host the World Cup was on hand to invest that exact amount in a company wanting to show the tournament when FIFA were struggling to get TV deals done.In Feb Surj Sports (part of the Saudi PIF) has invested $1billion in DAZN in exchange for 5% of the company. This is a company that has lost $1billion a year since 2019 having revenues just over $1billion. It's definitely not a normal investment.
