Current Player Thread Ciaron Brown

‘’He plays his club football in League One and he's a better player than that.

Michal O’Neill on Ciaron Brown.

Michael - your entire squad is largely made up of lower-end Championship and higher-end League One players. As it has been for years. As it will likely be for years to come.

That is exactly where Oxford United have sat not only for the last few seasons, but also large parts of our history.

We were relegated at the expense of your Blackburn side (also containing members of your Northern Ireland squad - see also Portsmouth, West Brom et al).

Ciaron Brown is a good player and he plays for a good club.

Show some f*cking respect.

Worth a big mention. Is now our most capped international player (whilst playing for us). Magic is on 18 , CB is 22 . Even if you exclude the 4 while a Cardiff player on loan. He will pass it next game.

Ciaron has been getting a lot of exposure of late, I can see bids coming in January, I really hope we can keep hold of him.
I've been well informed that he probably would have been allowed to go if it wasn't for the embargo. Millwall were seriously interested for one.
But Ciaron didn't sulk or push for a move like two others who think they're better than this club. We also had another centre back lined up before the embargo so I don’t think Kent would have been the only one signed.
I love Ciaron, a whole hearted player and character. We need to keep hold of him for the whole season if possible.

This is why I've got so much respect for him. We dropped down a league, were dealt a difficult hand with the embargo, but he has stepped up with some of his best performances for club and country without a single complaint.

A class act in every sense of the word.

Been a cracking signing since he came here on loan when none of us had heard of him, was then a late signing during another summer transfer window that was a mess but he has massively paid off, one of my favourite signings as he has always been unfashionable, but we have had great value out of him.

A superb player. Not sure he is that unfashionable - a goal scoring, tough as nails, good in the air centre back is always popular. I suppose he's not one of those Ben Nelson play out of the back type centre backs that managers with chinos, t-shirts and white trainers tend to like.

He can defend but can’t carry the ball out, have you watched modern football? Half the centre backs can barely head a ball, he is old fashioned and you can tell he came from non league but I am glad we have him.

Michael O'Neill really is an intensely dislikable person...anybody else feel the same?

Said it on here before
The Irish never forgive or forget, Robinson for his own end and trying to be Billy big b*****s.

"He brings a lot to the team. He was our most senior player tonight and he has really grown into that."

Michal O’Neill on Ciaron Brown.

No chance he will be on the radar of a Championship club, is there? Whilst I don’t foresee anyone paying top dollar for a 28 year old defender, he’s shown how capable he is.

One of those boring as f**k sides like Bristol City or Preston Town or something signing him perhaps?
Think we'd argue we're a better club than League One as well - really don't think it was that disrespectful and just psychology to boost Brown's confidence even higher. Pretty sure he (as in Brown) doesn't think he's a League One player and if he's putting in performances where managers are telling him that (be it O'Neill or Ramsey) that can only be a good thing.

I'd also say if it does bring interest from clubs from higher up the food chain, it likely brings more competition for his signature which in turn is liable to bring a higher fee.

A lot will depend where we are an if the embargo has been lifted by then.
If we are top 6 and can get players added to the team for a promotion push we are more likely to keep him.
If we are bottom half he is likely to go
If the embargo hasn’t been lifted we are likely to see Ramsey and other players go, but that is a worse case scenario.
We must be at a point where the embargo is close to being sorted.

Disagree.

If O'Neill rated us as a club, and could see that we are a top League One side looking to bounce back to The Championship at the first attempt, I don't think he mentions Brown's current level.

If Ciaron was at Wednesday or Leicester I think O'Neill show a level of respect to them that he is failing to give us.

And if, for example, Blackburn had gone down instead of us then I don't think O'Neill is saying the same about Tom Atcheson at this point.

It feels very much like a slight.

This was said about Ramsay in the summer. He doesn't need the money and he's proving himself under difficult circumstances here, so why would he leave early?

It's important for him as a manager early on in his career to show that he can stick to a job and get it done - attributes I feel Ramsey will show in his time with us.
