International News Christa Pike

Shouldn’t they have just kept going? I am lazy at work but normally have at least 3 goes at something before I quit.

Considering the incompetence shown based on what I've read, they would have still failed I reckon. Using a bent Cannula would be something a Student Nurse would know you can't do. It is horrific if it is true she said "My arm is going to burst open".

That country is a disgrace. Is it too woke to suggest that the least you can do if you are doing state-authorised killing of your citizens is to do it humanely? The violence and devaluing of human life embodied in their culture is horrific.

I wonder if she humanely tortured and killed her victim 🤔

What’s that got to do with it? I don’t think anyone’s on death row for anything other than heinous crimes.

Can I take from your post that you think it’s ok for governments to torture their citizens?

I think those on death row have surrendered their rights to normal, law abiding citizens empathy for how they are treated.

If you wish to fly the flag for evil; you’re free to do as you wish.

So that’s a yes then? There are a few countries around that have that approach, but I’m guessing you wouldn’t want to live in them. I think British values are better.

I wouldn’t torture and murder somebody; so your point is largely irrelevant.

Don’t you live in Australia? 🤔

Well, it is relevant if you think that state-authorised torture is fine, because that’s at odds with the country you live in.

Yup - living in Australia and discussing US culture with you. Australian values are better than US ones too, but than that’s not surprising because they are more closely related to British ones. All do still have some dark violence in how they have treated and continue to treat people that they have colonised, so it’s not all rosy.

It could only happen in the USA
Terrible crime but thirty years in death row. Endless appeals.
Yesterday they decide to not kill her then they will. Two goes at it failing to kill her and then try to resuscitate her with the intention of trying again.
She had a request to die by firing squad turned down.
I am not a believer in execution apart from exceptional cases but it should be done quickly and not bogged.
Disgraceful episode in modern USA history.

No, it’s not relevant to me because I wouldn’t put myself in a position to be on death row.

What happens to those heinous individuals is of no concern to me, but, I will provide an opinion to those that think they deserve a degree of humanity in death - not something their victims were afforded.

I hope she dies in hospital what she put her victim through was pure evil.

For those saying she was evil and deserved to die, I suggest reading the background story to the case. She was first raped as a toddler by her uncle, then repeatedly by various men through her life until she was 18. This is especially "ironic" as the governor of the state is trying to introduce a mandatory death penalty for child rapists due to the ongoing effect it has on the children affected. She was in an abusive relationship at the time with the boy (she was just 18, he wasn't quite 18 yet, this is important later) who coerced her into sexual situations with others she didn't want, including the one with the victim. The boy was the one who led the actions, he was the one that carved a pentagram on the victim (the torture element), but because he was under 18 he couldn't be sentenced to death, and was automatically painted as being led by her rather than the other way around. For the sake of around 200 days she was sentenced to death, not him.

I'd say by arguing for the torturing of citizens by a government, you're advocating for evil and a far bigger one than one psychotic incident decades ago.

The bloodlust that lies beneath ordinary society is disgraceful

Reminiscent of the Craig and Bentley case in the U.K. the seventeen year old kills a policeman and the eighteen year old who said let him have it Chris? The gun? The eighteen year old hangs…the police wanypted him topped even though he was of limited intelligence.

Some pretty sweeping statements above. It’ll take too long to argue and I can’t be arsed because a few people have made their mind up already but it’s some pretty clumsy stuff.

It’s all about perspective. For example, although I’m pro choice an outsider assessing the UK might suggest that the American advocacy for pro life counters the statements above and that Britain has a culture drenched in disrespect for life. (_and no I don’t want that debate either).

My point being a bit more nuance , a little less reliance on singular events, and trying to avoid being over influenced by the media portrayal of an environment, may improve the above.

For the record a ten year old girl died in my area recently from an E bike accident and I’ve never seen such a beautiful outpouring of grief, reverence and celebration of life by a local community. And I very much doubt any uk community could have gotten remotely close to what I saw.

We choose what we wish to see in this world guys.

Look where British values have got us. Some great values working well there chaps

Why don't they just use a firing squad? At least it would be quick and afford the prisoner a modicum of dignity.
I did find myself thinking yesterday that it's the method I'd pick if I had to.

It's funny how we pretend the modern methods are more humane when I think really it is just that the brutality of it all is usually more hidden with injections. But it's just as brutal and sometimes moreso.

being shot doesn't guarantee a quick death. though apparently neither does 2 lethal injections in this case.

On the other side of the spectrum, a good old fashioned hang drawn and quartering would provide incredible entertainment value.

I suppose it's a case of balancing each element to find something which works for everyone, yet is respectful.

She said that she would have rather faced a firing squad. Seems that would’ve been more effective.
Plain and simple hanging as done in the U.K. would be less fuss and fast. Cheaper too. No need to find a vein either.
Britain led the way there.
