He was just trying to play politics with the owners after Kelvin Thomas left - think had KT stayed it wouldn't have been an issue.

Wilder in my eyes deserves an aweful lot of respect, if I remember correctly when he took over we were mid-table at best in the conference and going backwards. Getting promotion out of that nonsense of a league was far from a given - i seriously fear where we would be now had he not come in to turn it around,

That sort of stuff is gossip and trivia, and no one really knows what goes on. You don't respect the guy who got us back into the league and has done great things with Northampton and Sheffield United?

How we left was awful, but what he achieved won't be bettered, Appleton getting us to League One and Des to the Championship were both fantastic, but I truly believe Wilder saved this football club, we barely had a pot to p**s in and further seasons in the Conference could have been the final nail in the coffin.

Totally agree with the notable addition that I feel it was Us fans who partially drove him out. We moaned that he was dour and the football largely unentertaining despite the results.

We stagnated. What was, it - 12th, 9th & 9th again in the three full seasons of his back in the Football League? And never scoring more than 60 goals in a season. Maybe we would have held on for a playoff spot in his final season, but we weren't world beaters that year either.

The job he did to get us promoted out of the Conference, and then re-established in League Two was utterly outstanding.....and then I think a few years later, it just ran its course. He wanted to move onto something new, we wanted to move onto something new (crowds had dropped significantly)......we each went our separate ways, and it ultimately worked out best for both of us. No hard feelings.

I reckon barring a fax machine related points deduction we would have done it a season sooner too. He gave the 2008-09 team made up of bits-and-pieces players a load of confidence. I reckon they would have won the playoffs that year.
 
I respect what he did in his first 18 months at the club, but after that he got a lot wrong and we stagnated in League Two, never even making the play-offs.

He dismantled the promotion side too early, and we never had the momentum that promoted teams usually do. He was stubborn and obstinate, and we stagnated, as @tonyw says.

Not a likeable man though, and I can't stand him as a person.

I know that you will have had more exposure to him than me Colin, so have better insight as regards the club.

I’ve met him a couple of times round Sheffield and my brother knows him to speak football with, and he is a straight up what you see is what you get Sheffielder! Very mixed bag, can be a miserable sod or good craic depending on the day..

The job he did in turning a sinking club around and restoring pride was incredible. You went to games actually expecting to win again.

His whole managerial record is pretty astounding bar the last couple of appointments at Boro and Watford.

2010. I was pleased to see me and Chippy on/in the box, way back then (still got a CD of the game somewhere) What a day that was?

2025 Another great day yesterday. I was pleased that the EFL highlights gave our game a reasonable amount of time last night. However…the curse of the unfashionable team struck again. All the footage (bar Dem’s goal) was of the blades in our box. OK, the brilliant saves were worth watching again, but nothing of our domination of the first half (commentary was merely “It’s scruffy now, but Sheffield have dominated the game”) interesting that Chippy, in his interview , said “I’ve got a stiff neck now. I’ve spent the whole match looking to my left “. Which suggests we bossed it for the first 45min.. The sound must have been filtered too? The atmosphere yesterday was electric and very noisy. Our excellent contribution from the SSU (remarked on positively by several on here) was the best I’ve witnessed for years.

I didn’t get into the box this time though…Nonetheless…..I was delighted to see myself on the TV again in the preamble to the blades game last night😉

As we said back in 2010…

Not sure I understand this ‘chippy’ thing in reference to Wilder.

He was the catalyst in getting us promotion from the conference, and arguably helped to save our club from dying at the end of that season, had promotion not been achieved. He then stabilised us in the football league again, despite the budget largely drying up.

There can be no doubt that Chris Wilder was an excellent manager for us and his unsavoury exit to Northampton shouldn’t really cloud people’s judgement of the excellent job he did for us. We almost certainly wouldn’t be where we are now, if it wasn’t for him and that promotion.

He has since been in attendance at the funeral of Mickey Lewis and often speaks in glowing terms of his fondness for our club.

Honestly, from knowing him a little bit from pubs round his locale, Chippy is a perfect definition! A great fun guy who has genuine time for people but can be a right grumpy sod!

He was fantastic for this club, scraped it off the floor, and turned it around completely.

On the sound, I doubt many mics were out for the crowd sound like main TV games. Sky+ games at any ground seem to have minimal mics for crowd sound. Rad Ox's coverage caught the atmosphere pretty well though after watching the full match replay.

I think it is just the 'Northern blunt' thing in some of his comments. Likely them from Yorkshire are less bothered about comments like his at the weekend about being disgraceful (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cj45nd75202o)

And I'm one of them!

He dismissed our history, and specifically our Milk Cup victory on Radio Oxford and from that moment on he could f**k right off as far as I was concerned.

(Although, on reflection, I thought those comments came later in his tenure, after we were back in League Two, so maybe I'm confusing it with something else he said?)
