Chris Maguire

People say a lot of things in order to avoid being seen in a bad light. He was offered a deal but wanted more money. Bury offered him a big pay rise (which I imagine they now regret) and he went there. Can’t blame him. Football careers are short. But OUFC didn’t let him go. He walked away. He’s a professional sportsman. Not an Oxford fan. If he wanted to come back. I like many would be pleased. But not sure his rather mercenary character fits the current set up. But would be good to see some of the control he can provide. Although I do assume he’s well off the pace and lacking sharpness if he can’t even get on the Bury bench.

There are two sides to every coin as they say. Maguire, around the time of the Bury away game said he actually paid for his own flight to Birmingham airport, to meet the club, to discuss his future, and the deal wasn't a great deal different from the original.
If true who was messing who about.

With eales track record over the last 18 months of saying things that don't seem to happen, I'm inclined to believe Maguire's version of events.

We have a team that is not currently capable of anything extraordinary.

We have a team of solid performers, but we don’t have anyone that can lift the crowd.

Our teams under Appleton had Baldock (graham) O’Dowda, Roofe, Johnson, Maguire.

All could inject energy/do something out of the blue.

Payne is stopped by all opposition now and we don’t have anyone that can create some magic. Maguire can. Let’s not forget the work ethic of Maguire and how he also helped his RB.

So true, not forgetting Connor McKeleny.

With someone like Maguire, you can build a team around him. Could you play him and Payne in the same side?

Yesterday epitomised how much we would miss Payne if he does return to Huddersfield. The way he ran, the effort and if he lost the ball he was doing everything to get it back.

You are joking right? - Every pass he made went to a white shirt, he had a stinker!

Radio Oxford says the club is not ruling out ex players to return. Could this be Mags?

We as fans have got to get over our hypocritical and unrealistic "loyalty" hang up. How many times have we said "we should be loyal to him and give him a new contract" versus "get rid he's become too injury prone". We only expect loyalty from players we want, the others can get lost. We demand loyalty but offer none in return. Bizarrely, we are happy to poach players from other clubs, without questioning their loyalty.

Fans are loyal to their league position and players are loyal to their financial security, their family and their career. You could argue the player approach is more noble than ours!

Anyway, the Bury fans are not happy with Maguire. He is considered by some as the worse signing they ever made in terms of performance vs cost. They consider him slow and lazy and he is not scoring goals.

In mitigation you could argue we know why they think that, and he's playing in an underperforming side.

Would I take Maguire back? Possibly. If we are short of pace then he hardly helps there.

If Pep does take him then it would have to be with the encouragement from our players and staff who know him, but nothing to do with one-sided notions of loyalty.

It wasn't until MApp's first January transfer window that he was able to get Roofe in and even then, it took Roofe time to adapt and make a genuine impact. Baldock initially arrived February 2015. Prior to that MApp filled the team with players like Michael Collins, Will Hoskins, Carlton Morris, Junior Brown, Wes Burns. It took time for MApp to get the players he wanted and there certainly wasn't an "X-Factor player" in the squad he had to hastily assemble after replacing Waddock - possibly Hylton, but during that first six months, Hylts was by no means MApp's first choice.

Maguire came and became a fan favourite. I can see why he is struggling at Bury. He thrives on that "big game atmosphere", given the atmosphere here at Oxford has flatlined, would he have had the impact he has made previously? Let's not forget there were times he made little impact or seemed to have little enthusiasm for being on the pitch when here. No real local derby to get his teeth into, with the exception of Pompey and Rovers, no other opposition has helped to create that extra spice Maguire thrives on (Northampton try bless them). As much as we all celebrated S*****n's demise last season, we have missed that buzz games against them provide - games leading up to, the games themselves and then the extra lift those 6 points give us afterwards. As good as Maguire was for us, the last two summers were always a "will-he, won't he" prolonged saga of non-committal. Finally, given everyone is saying what we require is more pace in the side, I can't see where Maguire fits in with that.

100% agree.
Not sure what he would add to a squad which we want to develop - this is a backward step. Having Mags back is more a romantic gesture than a practical solution to what we need to progress.

I would prefer Jordan Graham back...
Wouldn't be able to play this season. Already played competitions for 2 clubs this season. 6 minutes in championship cor Wolves and 34 minutes for Fulham. He has to play for one of these teams this season. Could vet him on free in summer though

By no means was Maguire the saviour, however he had personality, the ability to carry the ball, could do the shithouse stuff and had quality on set pieces.

Im not saying we need Maguire per se, what we need is someone with the ability to do something out of the blue, to get the fans on their feet.

Also if Van Kessel or Thomas fail to pass to him when he’s in a better position, Maguire will tell them what he thinks in no uncertain terms!:)
