Here is an idea....maybe rid the game of the people leeching off of it using money that doesn`t exist to buy football clubs that over spent chasing a rainbow..

Wow, if he is amongst the four most noteworthy signatories of that letter, then the others can't be that prominent (or is it Roan writing with tongue in cheek, for the very reason you mention?)

I kind of understand where they are coming from, but it is hard to justify when the top of the pyramid is made of solid gold rather than breeze blocks.

  • The value of Premier League clubs based on their 2018/19 accounts increased by 1.5% overall to £14.7 billion, with the ‘Big Six’ (Manchester United and City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs) making up £11 billion (75%) of this total (2018: £10.6 billion 73%).
Personally I think there should be fairer distribution of wealth in the pyramid for so many reasons, aside from the ability to create a "community dream" that a club can work their way up from the very bottom to the top.

Whilst I personally agree 100%, I always find it amusing when people who are otherwise right-leaning free-market thinkers suddenly come over all spread-the-wealth socialist when it comes to sport!

The Premier League clubs would probably argue that they're the ones that bring in the multi-billion pound TV deals, sell out 50,000 all seater stadia every weekend and selling a gazillion pieces of merchandise all over the world. Why should they share their wealth just because it's going to save some lower league football club with a few thousand fans?
If the Lower Leagues collapsed tomorrow, I very much doubt it would have a big impact on Manchester City or Chelsea's businesses.

I think that there is going to be a need for government support here - this part of the letter is a pretty fair summation:

"The government itself needs to take responsibility or many already embattled towns - often in areas of the country which have suffered many hardships in recent decades - will lose their last focal point."

You'd hope Manchester City would remember being in League 1 really, it isn't a massively long time ago that it happened, and we have a few ex-PL sides in with us this year.

The thing that separates it from the free market is the community aspect...that "bond" that people get. You don`t get the same with Tesco`s or Lidls!!
