National News The Brexit Thread 🇬🇧🇪🇺

Archie Norman, the Chair of Marks & Spencer has branded the EU’s Brexit border controls “pointless bureaucracy” as the UK government as food standards remain aligned to the EU. Why are we waiting to exercise our sovereignty and change our food standards?

We got Brexit done, now we need to get the food standards changed done. Can someone please remind me what changes to the rules concerning food we left the EU to change?

Nope...really not sure quite what point you're making about the internet "back then". It was irrelevant back then and just because it is all pervasive now, does not mean that those previously poor brainwashed souls who were told what to think from a very narrow choice of sources, are any better off today with the freedom of "information" at their fingertips today. Much easier to peddle a disingenuous message today than back then and much harder to be called out for it too!

From what Jim-bob said in 1975, it was clear and unequivocal that closer unity was the aim of the project. The argument won the day back then:

"But it's not only a question of growing prosperity, it's a question of peace and security. The Government believes very firmly that the security of Europe and the growing unity among its peoples, can be better helped if we are part of the Common Market Community"

Quite clear - closer unity of the people and closer alignment was always the aim with us at the heart of it.

He also goes on to say:

"The present belongs to us. We can make or marr our future as we will and of course there's no magic in the Common Market. It won;t solve our problems, we have to do that ourselves."

And yet...the EuroSceptic press made an absolute industry out of fabricating problems and ills and downright lunacy caused to the UK by those bullies in Brussels over the last 40 years. Much of it was of curse demonstrable horseshit. Much of it is and always was within our gift to solve as a sovereign state.

Jim C also went on to say:
"Finally and overwhelmingly in my opinion, whatever the future holds for our generation, it's in their (our children and grandchildren's generations) interests that there should be a growing unity in Europe. And that is why we ask you as a government to vote YES on Thursday".

Clear...how they hoped a Yes vote and the continued membership of the Common Market would pan out longer term and they didn't try to hide it either!

It was there, staring you in the face all along!

And you're right, we will probably never agree, because it was always plainly obvious the intention was closer unity....if you were concentrating on the detail that is...

Ask anyone then what closer alignment meant to them it was one thing - trade.

The reality is that one nation can not change what the EU wants they can only obstruct it with a veto and hope the position softens a bit and they even want rid of that.

So Jim`s suggestion we would keep any leverage or equality are a bit pie in the sky.
"Security and unity" are perfectly capable of existing outside the "club", you don`t start a scrap with your mates as soon as you leave the club do you?

We are out and it might be a wise choice, or it may not, but we will just have to live with it. :)

Vote for me #OUSP

At 9:30, Tony Benn is talking about the EEC becoming a Union...

Brexiters have been saying for the past 5-years that a Union was never mentioned, that they only voted for a Common Market...

This Govt are changing food standards, just by stealth with the Australian trade deal.

Hate to break it to you but if you didn`t see that at the time then that was it.
No VHS, no catch up TV and two other channels to watch.

Apart from it being reported in the media at the time of course....and written about numerous times subsequently...and now stored for infinity in the ether.

You see, even back then, you could find accurate and factual information if you were prepared to look and not just fall for lazy red top "fact-lite" rhetoric...

It was on the telly. Once, at the time.

Newspapers? Yesterday's news & tomorrow's chip paper!

Media coverage and the availability of information were streets apart but you are right, folk were "lazy", gullible, read the headlines and voted............. to join.
A better informed electorate voted................ to leave.

Glad you recognise it. :)

Difference being that everything Callaghan et al plainly said (and hoped) would happen back then, did happen.

Whereas the bunch of shysters you chose to believe, convinced you and plenty of others of the "considerable upsides" of leaving. None of which have materialised and probably never will. And yet you try to make out you are the informed ones....one of the weaknesses of following dogma I guess![emoji1787]

Your words are music to their ears and I guess it's there for all to see who has been taken in by it[emoji6]

Listening to the radio this morning and the economic news, despite Brexit & Covid, seemed rather rosier.

Now there may be other difficulties ahead, but its a start as we creep back towards some form of normality.

If only there were a huge labour market on our doorstep to help us fill the vacancies we clearly can't.....maybe if we spoke to them about some kind of freedom of movement arrangement, we could all benefit

And from quoted article:
Siren Thiru, head of economics at the British Chambers of Commerce said, however, that firms were currently facing an "acute hiring crisis".
"With Brexit and Covid-19 driving a more deep-seated decline in labour supply, the end of furlough is unlikely to be a silver bullet to the ongoing shortages," he said.
"These recruitment difficulties are likely to dampen the recovery by limiting firms' ability to fulfil orders and meet customer demand."

FOM only pushes wages down, you want equality then it almost needs a shortage of employee`s to force wages up, but then you get inflation yadda yadda....... 🤷‍♀️

Or you could increase simply increase the National Minimum Wage.

@Essexyellows: 'Doh, why didn't I think of that? '.

Unscrupulous employers push wages down by not paying people a decent living wage or what they're worth....just a thought.

No point blaming those looking for work for the low wages - they're hardly paying themselves now are they🤷‍♂️

Do you care what your carrot picker gets paid as long as they are 99p a bag in the weekly shop, or would you rather the picker earned more and you paid £1.19 for the carrots?
If the supply of people willing to work for lower wages dries up that creates upward pressure on wages.... and inflation but hey can`t have it all ways.

Whats your fan number? 🤷‍♀️
