National News The Brexit Thread 🇬🇧🇪🇺

"Car parts from Japan and Turkey used in the UK will not be treated as British, so some exports may see higher tariffs. "

Yet Euronews recently pointed out how it will indeed hurt the EU more than it hurts us, we are the 2nd or 3rd largest customer in so many areas for the 7 main economies of the EU, at a time when the EU wants them to pay more.
The UK car industry would need to increase production to fill the gap left by EU cars hence why BMW, PSA and NIssan all opted for their UK plants in recent months.

What a pickle indeed..... time we "flexed" the fact we are also in the top 3 of "EU" economies...

Yes, but the EU is a 'bloc' that has trade rules, and tariff free trading between the constituent countries. As a whole trading entity the EU dwarfs the UK, and that is why it has the trading power it does. One of the reasons our economy was (before Covid) reasonably strong was *because* we were in the EU with all the trading benefits that confers. Once we are out of it, those advantages will vanish.

Ah yes, but the EU27 car manufacturers are also baulking against the same possibility of tariffs within the EU as Japan & Turkey are not on the exemptions list.
So if the %`s don`t tally suggests there could be internal tariffs in the bloc.

From the article....

"That option was removed as part of the revision to the withdrawal agreement a year ago. But Lord Frost points out that the UK and EU27 car industries have jointly asked for such arrangements, including special consideration for electric vehicle exports. "

Just to explain what an Australia style deal is ... we don’t actually have free trade with Australia. We do have a trade deal on wine, which could explain why wine is just about the only Australian product you see in the shops.

You spelt it incorrectly. It should be 'Australian whine'.
