National News Boris Johnson - Ousted Former PM

Anyway............... not a disaster as some predicted, more folk switching to Lib Dems and Greens to send a note to Boris, and a big yuck foo to Starmer as he is obviously not seen as a viable alternative.

Toodle pip.. ✈️
That will become a far greater problem to the Tory party if the Lib Dems and Greens really become viable alternatives because they will push hard for electoral reform. I honestly think a multi party no majority parliament would make politics a far healthier place.

Can also imagine the arguments and the length of the time for a final outcome to their debates.

Number of people receiving three days' worth of emergency food by Trussell Trust foodbanks in the United Kingdom from 2008/09 to 2020/21.
The Conservatives won the election in 6 May 2010, and have remained in power ever since. As 'Dave' said - 'We're all in this together' ;);)

Yet poor and less well educated people continue to vote for them. I saw a guy on social media today saying he was working class but that Labour was the party of gays and ethnic minorities. He could have been a Russian troll, though, he didn’t have much of a profile

PR doesn't have to deliver a hung parliament. It can just deliver a more representative one which is not the same thing.

I totally accept the you reap what you sow argument, but unfortunately some people are far less understanding of that concept for many reasons. You appear to focus on the if you find yourself in that situation that's your own personal choice. There are very few people who desire or want to be hungry or cold or ill but unfortunately many have no choice. The current version of society does little to help. Reliance on food banks and charity to survive to me is morally and politically bankrupt. There in lies the fundamental political and philosophical differences between our viewpoint. I find that heartless, you obviously find it a personal weakness.
Have to agree.
Governments since the earlier 60’s have gradually eroded the state safety net .
I grew up in a time when the state came to your( my parents aid) and provided a welfare parachute, in the form of welfare cheques etc (1960).
Government and all politicians should be ashamed that non state funded food banks exist.

How dare those pesky lawyers do their job....
Good old Pritti....blaming everyone but herself.....again!

She has form, you know.

Next she'll blame the civil servants for not telling here more times that her plans were an unworkable pile of crap to begin with.

'Specialist Lawyers' - most lawyers specialise in a certain field, it's a bit like those knowledgeable doctors who are termed 'specialists'.

If the plan is lawful, then there won't be a problem will there or would PP prefer that she isn't held to account?

"or would PP prefer that she isn't held to account?" - not sure that is really a serious question....

It is from The i.

Some notable:

Brexit Freedoms Bill

This wide-ranging piece of legislation will give ministers the power to repeal various pieces of EU legislation which were written into the UK’s statute book, without seeking a specific Commons vote on them. Opponents have warned it will increase the power of ministers at the expense of Parliament. It will also assert the sovereignty of UK Parliament by removing the supremacy of retained EU law over UK law in the legal system – a move that will be celebrated by Brexiteers.

Nice to see this Govt, yet again, looking to cut Parliament out of the equation. And Liz Truss is talking about defending democracy....

I'm surprised the 2nd part hasn't been done already.

Public Order Bill

The legislation will aim to prevent highly disruptive tactics used by protest groups such as Insulate Britain and Extinction Rebellion. It will make “locking-on” – when activists lock or glue themselves together or to buildings – a new offence. The bill will also outline a new offence for “interfering with key national infrastructure” such as airports, railways and printing presses, with a maximum sentence of 12 months.

So they are pushing ahead with their clampdown on protests in a massively unnecessary over the top response. In a democracy, protest is part of it. So if protesting (preferably on your own unless near Parliament then don't come at all), don't make a noise or be noticed and just shuffle by disturbing nobody. And Liz Truss is talking about defending democracy....

Modern Slavery Bill

Aims to reduce the prevalence of modern slavery in supply chains through increased transparency from businesses and public bodies. Will ensure law enforcement agencies have stronger tools to prevent modern slavery. This includes strengthening the operation of Slavery and Trafficking Prevention Orders and Slavery and Trafficking Risk Orders.

Only seen brief mentions of this but on the face of it a good move.

Non-Domestic Rating Bill

The legislation will modernise the business rates system by using more frequent revaluations based on more accurate data. The business rates revaluation cycle will be shortened from five to three years from 2023. Businesses will be incentivise to invest in their properties to make them greener by offering rates relief.

I see the point in speeding up the revaluation cycle. I just hope the resources are added to enable this (I doubt they will though and I point that at all Govts as Labour were as bad at this).

Harbours (Seafarers’ Remuneration) Bill

Dubbed the P&O Bill after the scandal that shook the ferry service recently, the legislation will “ensure all ferry crews receive a fair wage” while working in UK waters or operating on a regular basis both to and from UK ports. It will also deter other companies from attempting to repeat P&O employment practices.

Good. Hopefully they define a 'fair wage'.

And finally, does anybody remember the GM food debate:

Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Bill

Government says this will provide a key post-Brexit freedom to establish a new, simpler regulatory regime for genetically edited organisms, or “precision bred plans and animals”, as it is described. It is hoped this will develop more disease and drought resistant crops in the first instance.

So you are happy with idiots gluing their hands to the roads to prevent people from going anout their daily business.
What was it someone firing one of these protests were taking one of their parents to the hospital as they’ve had a stroke, but because of the blockade the car couldn’t get through and the extra time it took me at the stroke the parent was having became worse and he/she is now paralysed down one side and needs continuous care.
Nothing is guaranteed but they hospital claim the parent would have had more chance if they got their quicker.
So yes the bill should stand and get passed, and if the protesters are locked up for 12 months then so be it.

Am I happy about it no, do I see protest as part of the system yes. Protest is often inconvenient as it gets attention. Should glueing their hands to a road and the other things included be made illegal, no. Protest is getting narrowed down, bit by bit as demonstrated by this Bill or the making a noise etc, that is 2 Bills in close succession. This is a Govt that is supposedly for "freedom of speech" etc through its war on wokeism/cancel culture etc, clearly it is only if it fits its viewpoint.

So you’re happy for them to block a major road to protest irrespective of the serious consequences

What they were protesting has serious consequences as well. And I've answered your question about whether I was happy or not already.

Well lock them up, protest by all means but not by hindering services and people going about their daily business
