By what measure are Birmingham a "massive" club? They've been a mid table Championship side at best for 15 years or so.

Even in the midlands, they're behind Villa, Wolves, West Brom, Leicester, Forest. And barely any better than Stoke, Coventry, Derby.

Without buying the league, they're more basket case than massive.

I'd love to see both of them fail to go up this season. I've never bought into the Wrexham love affair. Spending 10 times more than every other club in your league has got them back to back promotions but Stockport have virtually matched them on a fraction of their budget without any recognition.
Not exactly true, a lower budget yes, but nowhere near a fraction. Stockport have a wealthy owner putting huge funding into the playing budget and stadium redevelopment plans. They have had the top budget in the league behind Wrexham in the last few years.

Eurgh. 'Hollywood Derby'?
St Andrews@ Knighthead Park?
All American jock Tom Brady shmoosing with David Beckham?
£15m on an unproven striker?
American/United/Delta Airlines?

f**k right off.

Jay Stansfield is proven. 12 goals & 2 assists in 43 Championships appearances last season for Birmingham. The season before he got 9 goals & 7 Assists in 36 L1 appearances for Exeter. You can argue the fee (utterly ridiculous for a L1 club to pay imo) but he is proven in L1 and I'd say the Championship as well for a 21 year old.

It's still bad business. If he scores 20-30 goals this season, and another 20 in the Championship, he's still not going to be valued at any more than £25m. Now, I'm sure Brum fans will say they want to keep hold of him, he's on a long contract and he'll play in the Prem for them soon. But it doesn't change the fact that his current market value is nowhere near what they paid, and it looks a very rash purchase.

A whole hour of build up on Sky Sports, most L1/L2 games get 20/30 minutes at best. Constant cutting to the people in the crowd meaning you miss parts of the game, interviews with the chairmen before the match (when else does that ever happen?). Birmingham’s first sell out in years, despite being in the Prem and Europa League this generation.

What both clubs are doing is so grim and you can hate them as much as you like, but remember the media lapping it up will always be the biggest evil.
This is all true but if something similar happened to us, there would not be many Oxford fans complaining.

I think it is a ridiculous transfer. If his goals get them into the PL then I suppose it'll be worth it financially but that it is one hell of a gamble with a low likelihood of happening. I was only countering the original point that Jay Stansfield is unproven.

Watched the last ten minutes, thought we would smash the granny out of both of them at the same time then turned it off, this level of football is beneath me now.
Not sure I agree with this. Birmingham looked a very good team (not a bunch of individuals), and played Wrexham off the park after the first 15 minutes (when Sky commentators couldn’t pour enough praise on Wrexham). This shouldn’t be surprising given the obscene amount of money Birmingham have spent.
Wrexham on the other hand looked like a League 2 team, with a lot of players who are past their best.
I didn’t watch any of the prematch build-up and can only imagine how fawning Sky were to both sides. The constant camera shots of Beckham and Brady during the game were nauseating, although I notice that Beckham cleared off well before the end.

For the life of me, I can't work out why any hedge fund (American or not) would want to buy a mid-level English football club like Birmingham. Has any owner of any club like them ever made money from the deal? They are an absolute money pit......made even worse if you make absurd decisions like sacking a talented young English manager who's got you playing well to insert a high profile failure, and paying £10m for a striker in League One. The only clubs you can maybe financial engineer your way to a profit are cash cows like Manchester United, not perennial also-rans like Birmingham.

Can only come to the conclusion that they're a very bad hedge fund.

Wrexham make more sense as they're just a vanity project for an absolutely minted member of the Hollywood glitterati, and his mate.

Also have to note that for as much as most people on this thread seem to hate both clubs, it's a bog-standard League One game and it's gotten 46 replies on here. Whatever the media are doing with these two clubs, it's clearly working........

Money laundering probably, on about building a new stadium 60,000 seat stadium for them.

I am negatively inclined to Birmingham because of being bottled toward New Street after we won there 1-0, not because of too-rich Yanks spaffing cash left and right.
I am ambivalent towards Wrexham as a club, but admit that the series was good telly and that Rob and Ryan (and the majority of the fans) are good people.

Oxford v Birmingham in 1984-85 was the best pitch invasion and proper on-pitch fighting that I've seen. Don't think Wrexham are capable of those heights.
