Best and worst shirt sponsors

Pergamon and BPCC - our first and dodgiest. Seems as if Maxwell was thinking that everyone else is getting one so got to do likewise. Then we got the Sunday People which at least was known nationally. Then the legendary Wang.
Sunday Journal (the Oxford paper) was the first.

That league 2 era we had some truly awful kits

Ian Lennagan to the kit people: Please design us the most awful looking garbage you can think of

You're using the word "design" there as if anyone did anything other than pick one of the Nike templates from a catalogue and slap our crest and a sponsor on it. Even the colours weren't custom, we had to settle for whatever shade of yellow was available in that season's range. I remembered finding it embarrassing that our away kit in 11/12 was Southend's home kit for that season.

I used to love the WANG logo. It often used to raise a smile among my non-Oxford supporting friends when I wore my white replica away shirt to the Iron Horse in Amersham back in the day.

"Get your WANG out" has become slang among my uni mates for going to play football, as it was the kit I would wear down 5-a-side while living in Leicester.

WANG is the best for lots of reasons, and then Unipart.

Black’n’rounds and Animalates were a nadir - tinpot nonsense.

Had a mate who worked at Domino at the time - late dotcom boom madness where I think they bough up a lot of smaller web agencies etc with all the money sloshing about…and then disappeared! Easily our worst ever kit from a look/feel point of view, even if it’s quite a nice and simple logotype for a sponsor.

Just glad we're avoiding the likes of dodgy crypto type companies or potentially worse, betting companies. Awful lot.

Says a supporter of a team in S*y Bet League One
Yes agreed on the betting company sponsorship - however, I feel that's more luck than judgment, and one day we will need to stomach it.

If fans didn't buy the gambling kits, it might stop the sponsorships. Unfortunately some people lack even the most basic moral compass and would just buy one because that's what they've always done!

I don't think companies sponsor clubs based on replica kit sales. It's more to do with exposure, so TV coverage of games, etc. That said, I'd rather have Animalates than any betting company on the front of our shirts

Yes but the only way the clubs would wake up and say "maybe our fans don't want this" would be if the kit sales stopped. Granted, they probably still get a financial net gain from taking the gambling sponsor but I reckon it would work.

Obviously this is easier for Football League teams to achieve than PL clubs where they'll still have an international fan base who couldn't care less if the club is sponsored by Midnite, Bet365, Mossad or Gazprom.

Wang is the best and worst. Best because it is synonymous with our greatest era. Worst because at school a few friends (who supported Swindon, yeah I know but apart from that, they were good lads) saw fit to replace the 'G' with a 'K'.
