Best and worst shirt sponsors

In our latest episode, we get around to discussing this very important question.

Where do you stand on the likes of Wang, Animalates, BG, Black'n'Rounds, and various parts of the Maxwell empire being splattered across our shirts?

As someone who was born in the 90's, I grew up with the Buildbase shirts so will always think that is our best one.

Animilates defo the worse (alongside the shirt itself!). Also wasn't a fan of Singha as it didn't feel like an OUFC sponsor.

Wang is the best for me but then I associate it with the events of the time.

Can't separate Animilates or Black 'n' Rounds as the worst, regardless of the events. Both looked like a sponsor a Regional non league level team would have.

Animalates was much worse than Black 'n' Rounds (and the shirt was far too orange). Neither were household names (!) - but when asked, I always felt much more comfortable with 'it's a tyre company' than 'it's pilates for kids'.

As has already been said, Wang is both awful and excellent at the same time!

The Singha one always made me chuckle because it meant we had three animals on the from of the shirt.

Not sure I 'like' any of the sponsors logos - they just are what they are. The less distracting and in your face the better, and any of them that start to introduce a new colour (or more than one) onto the shirt always look awful (ie Bridle and the weird green bit on Liontrust.)

I have never been so glad that we weren’t in for Adebayo Akinfenwa that season. It would have been horribly on the nose and a lightning rod for the worst in society to comment.

Best: Unipart - Oxford brand and an initial letter to match our nickname. U’snipart.

Worst: Animalates - Hard to pronounce, no one really knew what it was and cheesy lettering on an awful kit. The business was shut down in 2021.

My god that Domino kit The image on Oxford Kits Website really doesn't do justice to how bad it was in real life. Under floodlights it almost turned green. It was even a shocker to touch, must have caused a load of chafing when worn.

An absolute shitshow of a kit, for an absolute shitshow of a season.

Best - can only be Wang Computers. Not only nerdily cool, but also one of the most valuable sponsorships in the league at that time (they wanted a way into publishing, Maxwell owned a big publishers, he told them to sponsor us for X in return for his business).
Runners up - Unipart, Singha

Worst - Domino. Nobody had a clue what it was (a web agency from memory) and thought we'd spelt the pizza company wrong. Also in combination with probably the worst kit.
Runners up - Oxford Sunday Journal, Animalates (also combined with a bad kit, and only on there because no-one paid enough to enter the draw for the home sponsorship - Isinglass got the away kit sponsorship that way), and Black'N'Rounds (a company that Daryl is still a director of, and just a vehicle to get money into the club.

Pergamon and BPCC - our first and dodgiest. Seems as if Maxwell was thinking that everyone else is getting one so got to do likewise. Then we got the Sunday People which at least was known nationally. Then the legendary Wang.

Never a fan of the Bridle logo on the shirt (nothing against the company, just the design makes me think of dish washer capsules) but fair play to them for sticking to their morals and pulling their sponsorship after we signed Luke McCormick. However, though I like that we replaced them with a local charity, Sobell House's logo was practically invisible on the shirt from any sort of distance. It left the blandest kit looking even blander.



So great for us to have a local charity on the front of the shirt, but (once you disregard Animalates) probably the worst "sponsor" from a visual design perspective.

Surely an honourable mention for Liontrust - a decent sponsor with a nice plain logo. Looked really good.

Buildbase was my favourite. The worst - It goes without saying really...
