Current Player Ben Nelson

Will Vaulks is guilty of making an early mistake in his career at Oxford and some made up their mind at that point. In their minds he'll never be good enough no matter what he does, and even great moments will be immediately followed up with a "Coventry Backpass" comment.

It's the Sam Long effect, or for those a little older, Matt Murphy!

I disagree - if it was purely the Coventry mistake then people would have likely forgiven him and moved on.

It was what felt like big mistake after big mistake over multiple games that cost us a vast amount of points which is what caused people to make their minds up about Vaulks.

You're just looking for any reason to classify fans behaviour to suit an agenda.

"Big mistake after big mistake over multiple games that cost us a vast amount of points"

This is exactly my point. Will Vaulks was directly responsible for the Coventry goal but everything else has been blown out of proportion. A missed pass 30 seconds, and 15 touches before a goal? Lets blame Vaulks!

Maybe on the same basis we should attribute assists to him for a pass that leads to a goal 30 seconds later too?

Since the change of formation to 2 in the middle, Vaulks has looked much more like the player that we signed. He was player of the season in a Championship side last year and has been one of our better players since Rowett arrived.

The fact that some can't see this, or prefer to exaggerate something from 30 games ago shows that it's not me with the agenda.

Nothing has been blown out of proportion. It was picked up by many that his consistent errors were costing us points and there was a lot of frustration because he had good pedigree when we signed him based on his championship experience.

I like Vaulks and would say he's had a turbulent season, but he has shown more consistency and his good qualities lately which is helping us in our relegation battle. That doesn't change the fact that he had a shocking period of football earlier on in the season.

The biggest failure of Des in the Championship was to think that we could play with one holding midfielder. Everyone who played in that role got overrun. Vaulks struggled, and this was made harder by having virtually no outlets. So tackles were missed, passes intercepted, and runner lost. But that is more to do with the system than any of those who played in that role.

Of course there was the Coventry back pass. But every player has screwed up somewhere along the lines and you'd be hard pushed to find someone who hasn't cost us a goal at some point.

But some will continue referencing this for some players whilst completely ignoring others who have done the same.

Leeds took 7 seconds and one pass to score after Vaulks passed it sideways to their player in 20 yards of space.

That was one of those weird no look, one touch, sideways passes he did a few times pre Rowatt that caused that goal, was always going to happen. Its interesting that he has completely stopped doing that under a more no nonsense manager, or it could be that after it finally gave way to the inevitable goal he has realised how stupid that pass is, all risk for virtually no reward.

He's still doing the not looking hook over his shoulder though. Does it a couple of times a match which is annoying. It's a habit more than anything. He did it on Saturday with no-one around him when he could have chested it down and passed.
Overall I think he's a decent player though.

Hey all,

Leicester fan here. huge result for you today glad Ben could help.

As we are going to be (hopefully) joining you next year it’s almost certain Nelson will be our starting cb next year. Or at the very least in our squad.

How do you all rate him? We've always seen him as one of (if not the best) best prospects we have.

Do you think he’s good enough to play in the prem in a few years? I don’t have many doubts he can break into our side, as we are shocking at the back but how ready does he look?

Thanks for looking after him and I genuinely hope you survive

Other people probably rate him higher than me. I think he’s very good but not yet amazing. His distribution can be iffy and I don’t think he uses his size and strength as well as he should. I would like to see him bully attackers a little more. Also needs to improve his decision making in my opinion. Doesn’t deal with bouncing balls that well if he’s running back towards his own goal, for example. I don’t ever feel like he knows what he wants to do in that scenario.

That said, he wins a lot of headers, is big and fast, and when he brings the ball out of defence he can really break the lines. I think you will benefit from his time here hugely next season, it’s just shame he had such big injury. Otherwise I think he would’ve kicked on another level by now.

Would not surprise me to see him play in the PL in the future.

I think he's excellent. Good in the air, quick, very calm under pressure. Great distribution. Only slight issue is a tendency to be a little bit casual at times. Can get caught out on positioning. Probably a concentration issue, which can be worked on. We've had some very good centre halves in the last few years and he's on that level. Probably not PL ready yet, but definitely high end Championship calibre.

This is rubbish. Don't listen to Northernyellow. Nelson is a lower end championship player at best. Can't see any way he is going to develop. It would be best for Leicester if they release him to Oxford at the end of the season so he doesn't take a squad place up for you.

For us to move forward then sentiment cant get in the way. Players like Long, Leigh, Harris, McEachran have all played their part to get us where we are today but we need to improve.
Football is ever revolving, todays hero’s are tomorrows has beens, we all want the next great player that’s why academy’s are the new reserves or stiffs as they used to be called.

Personally, I think he's top top drawer and is destined to have a long career at the top level.

His biggest impact I think is his ability to carry to ball out and progress the play forward.

We have decent defenders at this level in Brown, Moore & Helik however, when Nelson was out of the side I felt like we were so easy to defend against as the opposition knew the ball was either going to go long, sideways or short to one of the midfielders. I think he adds another dimension to our game and has allowed us to carry more of a threat and get up the pitch more.

As others have mentioned he perhaps doesn't dominate forwards as much as he could/should, but I think that will come. Easy to forget he has only just turned 21 and has less than 50 first team games.

I have heard whispers of the Chelsea interest and it doesn't surprise me. If I was advising him I'd say to sit tight and have a full season in the Championship with Leicester next season. After that I think he'd be more than ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

For me, this is why Dickie, Atkinson and McNally were the ones bought by clubs higher up in the past. They all had an ability and willingness to break the line and carry the ball 30 yards up the pitch. I suspect that’s why we fought to keep Nelson in January, even though he was still two months away from being fit, because he’s the only defender we have who can do this with any real purpose.

He won't have done himself any harm after Saturday
Like all of our defenders, he was excellent against a very high quality forward line ( and some pretty decent substitutes!)
Agree with other comments on here, that him being able to bring the ball out, is a big benefit to us.
I reckon he will be competing to be one if Leicester's CBs next season.

Cheers for the input lads. another huge win for you. Really looking forward to seeing him as a regular in our side. We have a lot of amazing talent coming through right now, hopefully we form a good relationship with you after this as we will have plenty of players that might need a loan next season.

Dont know if you would have been able to watch much if any today, but again he was superb. Other than being beat for what was arguably a pen, he did not put a foot wrong today.
My biggest gripe with him is that he isnt quite as aggressive as you want a CB of his size to be, but he attacked the ball well today, especially on the floor, and quashed a couple of potentially dnagerous counter attacks before they could really come ot anything.

Suspect you won’t be loaning too many players to us after you’re relegated.

Ben Nelson is a class act. He will defo end up in the prem and maybe play for England 1 day. We had James Beadle last season in goal and I think he will play for England too. He is already England u21s now.

Beadle can't get in the Wednesday team.
That’s probably because they are using their own young goalie knowing Beadle won’t be there next season

On Nelson he’s a very good young player with bags of potential I hope he goes on to have a very good career and play for England with beadle especially knowing little old Oxford united helped in their development
