Current Player Thread Ben Davies

Where does it say he is carrying an injury? It says the club are managing him carefully to get him up to speed so he doesn't get injured, it's the same as what the club are doing with Prelec too.

So now we only want players who play games for a parent club and loan games don't count?
I get what you're saying, but we have a bit of a crisis in the position he's been brought into cover, not exactly ideal to know that full well prior to trying to find someone, and to then make the decision to sign someone who isn't fit to cover said position.

With Prelec we still had options, so it was less critical that he was ready to hit the ground running.

I think saying it is a crisis is a bit OTT. We have Currie, Long, Moore and Spencer who can play in a back 2 or 3 alongside Helik.

That's why everyone is scratching their heads, as to not playing Currie from the start...
Everyone?
I reckon it is probably pretty even between Currie and Leigh.
Thought that Currie was poor when he came on at Hull.
Currie will play, probably tomorrow, but I am not as convinced as you are that Currie is a long way ahead of Leigh at the moment

I think you will find Davies played 40 odd games for BCFC last year
Doesn’t seem injury prone.
What is likely to happen is if you rush players into a team without being physically fit they could injure themselves.
Sensible precaution in my book
What? Rush them in when they are not physically fit!!!!?
I'm gonna do my nut in a minute. Its their job FFS! To stay physically fit with the group AND when they are away from the group.

I agree .
He looked promising in the preseason matches .
Less so since

There is a world of difference between ticking over with your fitness in the closed season (which, as you say, is what they SHOULD be doing), and having the fitness of a pre-season, which is more of an intense training block.

Greg Leigh has been a great servant for us, and had some cracking games and spells.....but he is bang out-of-form at the moment. Thought he had a shocker on Saturday, particularly in the first half. Constantly giving away possession, some really weak defensive headers and offered absolutely nothing coming forwards. He and Tyler were by some distance the weak links in an otherwise solid enough performance by the team.

I don't know that Currie would be better. I don't think there's any harm in finding out.

No, I don’t think they should be ticking over at all. That’s what I do as a blue collar worker with 4 x gym sessions a week, incorporating some moderate 45 min cv interval sessions and weights as part of my 25.00 a month gym package. I might even do a class or two and treat myself to a PT sesh! I then return to pre season late July, running up Blenheim hill and doing 4 min runs and shuttles, playing a couple of friendlies and a six a side tournament with my mates before doing the bleep test and playing a season in the Oxford Senior League.

Some of our footballers are on 10 plus grand a week! They should be f*****g god like come late July.

First game of the season .
Pompey had 7 weeks of “intensive “ preseason ((quote John Mousinho)
We had 3 weeks .
We also had an unbelievable 22 injuries ( quote Gary Rowett)
I think questions need to be asked about the efficacy of our back room medical and fitness practices .

I suspect most of the issues can be traced back to our successful Indonesia trip, more than the effectiveness of back room medical and fitness practices.

We took a group of players who’d finished the season running into the ground for points against the likes of Sheffield Utd without issue and we threw them into three competitive football matches on terrible pitches on the other side of the world.

Perhaps you could argue that a modified preseason programme should have been prepared, to reduce the risk of injury in those high intensity matches.

I still think the elephant (or lion in Gary’s case) in the room is the Indonesia tour when you compare our preseason, subsequent injuries and current fitness levels with other teams.

Need Davies available ASAP!

Moore needs dropping - terrible start to the season. Not going to win games in his current form.

Sorry if I’ve missed on another thread, anyone know Ben’s injury and how long he’s out for?

GR said after the game at the weekend that he was out with some tightness but nothing to worry about. They said that they’d need to find a plan to manage him and his minutes bearing in mind his lack of pre season.

Comfortably our best defender today.

The fact that he was given just 1 start from 13 matches spanning almost 3 months is absolutely laughable.

Persevere with 5 at the back? Move Brown to LB? Drop Brown altogether? Play two left-sided centre-halves and drop Helik??

I don't know what the answer is, but Davies has been criminally under-used and that needs to change.

We've conceded so many shambolic goals this season that it also adds to the fact that his lack of game time becomes even more bizarre. How does a coach of GR's experience and ability to tighten up teams let that slip?

The first was down to Cumming, the second looked a well worked goal to me.
Haven’t seen any replays and their goal was at the other end, but had a great view of their first and I think our defenders thought Cumming would claim it

The second was a result of Brown getting beat on his outside and unable to prevent the cross, meanwhile Helik allowed the attacker to get accross him and win first contact to poke it home.

It was dismal defending from our supposedly best 2 centre halves, certainly that is how it looks based on GR’s team selection this season!

For me I'd drop Brown bring in Davies and revert to a back four, it's as simple as that. Brown seems incapable/unwilling to use his right foot so couldn't really move him to the right and his on the ball work is not up to being a LB at this level.

At this stage with our form, what have we got to lose? (Answer - more games of football).

Brown and Helik are having second season syndrome-style performances. Their levels have dropped a bit. Not criminally so but I’m glad that we have Davies to add some quality to the side.

I spoke to someone in the media who had a line to BDK. They said that our midfielder had said to them that we simply lack ‘a bit of quality’. I couldn’t agree more with that.

I see this levelled at a lot of left footed players but how many times does Helik use his left foot?
