General BBC Oxford South Today ended + radio changes

The problem is BBC is not like a commercial channel that is free to focus on its core audience. It has remits in its charter that are set by the Trust to meet the purposes set by the government. The purposes are:

1. Sustaining citizenship and civil society
2. Promoting education and learning
3. Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence
4. Representing the UK, its nations, regions and communities
5. Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK
6. In promoting its other purposes, helping to deliver to the public the benefit of emerging communications technologies and services and, in addition, taking a leading role in the switchover to digital television.

each of those then builds to a series of remits (full list http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust...govern/purpose_remits/2013/purpose_remits.pdf) such as "Cater for the different nations, regions and communities of the UK."

So there are lots of different things pulling decision making in different directions that the BBC can't change in the way another organisation could.

Until recently of course no "old" people paid the license fee, until that was changed as part of a Conservative led plan to turn public opinion against the BBC.

I suppose the point is that after 40/50 years they have paid enough into it to fund it for their lifetime, maybe a reduced rate would be fairer though, scaling down as they get older. If we can't fund a bit of cheap daytime tv for 90 year olds then we really are fucked, how much does it really cost to show a rerun of cash in the attic?

I don't necessarily object to them paying - more likely a discounted rate. But it needs to be done openly, honestly, and with a proper plan.

though if Rad Ox isnt going to be broadcasting after 2pm , its gonna be even more mayhem on the Oxford/ Oxon roads with no 'local' traffic reports on 'local ' radio, - instead of if possible avoid delays/ incidents that arise, basically more will get stuck in them- well done (NOT) BBC!

JackFM Oxfordshire can REALLY capitalise on this. They have a morning show then one from 3-6pm, which may move to 2pm then have local shows throughout the evening.

Get Radio only really broadcast every morning and some evenings but might increase local output after 2pm now.

As far as I can remember it’s the normal station until 2pm , then it’s a shared programme from the”south” till 7, then it’s a national based , football in the evening continues as normal

I can’t work out chopping local tv coverage fits in with remit

They have bigger clubs, we’ve gone from being the biggest club in OUR local news areas to one of the lowest.

On a serious note I think it's rather sad that we won't have anymore local news I'm not really a person to watch the news I find it depressing but used to watch BBC Oxford news as it is the area I live in I don't really care what's happening in the new forest or how choppy it is on the solent
