General Atmosphere

Everyone in attendance today made a difference. Great atmosphere and result. But more importantly, we’re staying up 👏

The group had a slow start to the season, the atmosphere was at a low. We knew something had to be done and we did our best to get the kassam rocking. So proud of how the group and the atmosphere has improved and developed these past few weeks.

Work to do in the summer and we’ll come back next season even better.

You lads have done such a cracking job with atmosphere, especially in the second half of the season. This club deserves vocal support and you guys are certainly doing it. KEEP THE DRUM!

Started on the right but moved to the left in my late teens.

Same.

When we were old enough to go without parents we moved from the Beech Road to the London Road and I think we only 'picked' the Right Side initially because that was the first entrance as you came in through the turnstiles.

At some point we must have realised our mistake and moved across. And never looked back.

Would only ever consider myself a Left Sider now.

As someone who has sung, cheered and cried (I was young) on both The Left Side and The Right Side of the London Road for close to thirty years I can say the last few games have been as good as!

However, probably given my advancing years, I did find the ridiculously high volume of PA music blasting out crap music during the post match celebrations an assault on my ears that took the edge off the moment. Someone's got to crank it down from 11.

Someone mentioned safe standing earlier in the thread. I think a section of safe standing (perhaps the entire top half of the seating) would improve the atmosphere even more! People sing more and make more noise when standing. Can we get OUSP on the case?

Only ever went in the left side. Right side was no comparison imo. Glad you saw the light. :giggle:

There’s a few of us left who remember how to do it.
Still miss being bundled down the London Rd terrace when we scored.
😎
Yep, miss that pungent sweaty concoction of body odour, beer, nicotine and urine as beauchamp smashes one in on the volley, before the audible snap of ankle ligaments as a hellish celebration ensued…they were the days.

Pre enforced segregation The London Road end ,( certainly for bigger games) invariably had Oxford in the Right side and away support in the Left side, sometimes separated by a line of TVP. albeit didn't stop some of Oxford's finest getting into the left side. - (Albeit wasn't definitive, it occasionally depended on which set of supporters got in the ground en masse first) Segregation eventually came in , (as did pitch permiter fences in time- along with away support being housed in cuckoo lane end) though, for a period of time, the Left side was definitely the 'livlier' side of the London road end. - At least that's what my memory recalls, though memory isn't what it was.

Consider myself a Left sider- though stood on both sides ( right side in some of the earlier games in my younger teens)

back on thread subject, Atmosphere at the last two home games has been the best ever at the breeze block IMO. Along with a few others I was against having a drum, Yellow Division have changed my mind on that,- great work chaps, and keep it going for seasons to come

Left side up until I was around 16 , then joined the proper “ lads “ in the corner( left side) by the police hut

"Safe standing" is actually "Railed Seating" and costs anything from around £80 per seat to install, but likely to be higher if covering a relatively small section. I've heard talk of £100k+ for fewer than 1000 seats.

Unfortunately, the ground situation, and still no agreement to play there beyond next summer means that we won't be seeing this at the Kassam.

It's funny how every ground in the country has its own migratory pattern.

Start off maybe in the family stand as a nipper, then progress onto a slightly more rowdy bit (right side) and then as a teenager progress to the lairy section (left side), then get a bit older and maybe less interested and go back to the right side. Then have kids and maybe go back to the family stand. Some then take the path of enjoying the finer things in life - have two types of olive oil, buy "taste the difference" at Sainsburys and look down at people who go to the Harvester. Those people go to the South Stand Upper.

Or go from the Beech Road straight to the lairy section and stay there. 🙂

Those costs are wild.

I was intrigued to see that the Cardiff set up wasn't much more than some rudimentary scaffold anchor-bolted into the concrete.

I guess a large proportion of the cost is in consultative and bureaucratic expenses?

Again, the restrictions of Grenoble Road feel like a noose around the club's neck.

Knew you guys had the potential to grow into something good for the club. The displays have been a great start and the atmosphere is improving. Glad I told you to stick with the drum, it improved the atmosphere ten fold when we used one years ago. You have a good drummer and coupled with good performances and sell out Championship attendances we are onto a winner.

You can see older Ultras lads mixing in and enjoying it in one of the videos above, proving yourself game by game, keep it up because the benefit to the club is huge. I hope the club don't underestimate how important a group like this is, they need to see how much difference you are making and relax more rules to allow things to progress and improve.

Hopefully the club and security can work together to allow flags to be waved all game in a certain section, that would be a great step forward. If anyone at the club is reading this, make it happen, let them wave the flags all game...

Just a London Roader, didn't really get the left side, right side thing. All Oxford aren't we?

You missed an aroma.

Is there any actual rule in the EFL or PL that flags cannot be waved during games, or is this a rule the club have decided upon?

I have seen large telescopic waver flags in use at other UK grounds during games. If the club policy is that a flag could impede a spectators view, then why not at least allow it on the back row, who's view would it be blocking then?

Hope the club can be proactive on this.

I don't think it's written anywhere in the rules, but with most things it's down to the clubs / security teams discretion. The last excuse they used was that the waving flags may block a security camera during the game, which seems a lame excuse when it wasn't an issue when we were allowed to wave them during the game years ago. Would love it if we can use small steps to eventually turn the East Stand into a German looking ultras stand one day, with a view to having this at a new stadium. Imagine waving flags at the front with the lads getting the crowd going from the front of the stand, atmosphere would be incredible.

I started going when I was 8 and did the full journey of maturity:

- Beech Road seats
- Beech Road terrace in front of the seats
- Beech Road terrace next to the London Road
- Osler Road terrace
- Right (wrong) side London Road
- Left side London Road
Hope you managed to complete the set when the let home fans into the Cuckoo Lane, such as the last game of the season 84/5 v Barnsley.

Since the group formed around this time last year all we’ve wanted is to make a better atmosphere, especially at home.

Like a few have mentioned, the Kassam’s acoustics and the fact we currently have no section or safe standing makes it very difficult to create an atmosphere, which hopefully may be fixed or at least made easier if and when we move ground.

But as a group we’re so pleased to see the atmosphere finally kick on these last few games, the drum has certainly helped. Many of us were also a bit skeptical of it, but we decided it was worth a try and it’s good to see that it has paid off.

The fans pulled through when the players needed it, long may it continue and improve next season.

Tbf the players pulled through when the fans needed it too!

Well I did stand there between matches in the 5-a-side competition on The Manor.

Waving flags during games is something that we have been hoping to do for a while now. We have been working with the club to try make this possible and will continue to do so. And in all fairness to them, the club have been very good with us and our relationship with them is growing stronger.

The reason we’ve been given is that there is a goal line tech camera along the back wall of the east stand, and therefore flags larger than 1m cannot be waved during the game incase it gets blocked.

Many groups in the UK and most abroad have flags going during the games, and they look great. Hopefully this is something that we’ll be able to do soon as well.

Ah, stood there for the 2:2 cup game v Man Utd in1972 on the slightly raised bit back right looking at the pitch. Got a good view of Bobby Charlton annoying, late equilizer.

At least you were there, dad decided I was too young to go. Harsh, I was nearly 3 weeks old by then...
