General Around the leagues

A sickening decision, you don't change what isn't broken. The Championship is the best and most pure league in world football - a part of it died today. I'm very eager to find out how Oxford United voted.

Team who finishes 8th in the Chapionship can go to the premier league but a team who finish 2nd in the national league might not go up into the football league.

But the team finish 7th in the national league might? Not certain that comparison works.

For a club like us who stand little chance of finishing top 6 currently but are aiming for top 10 (top 30) eventually, the chance of having a good season and being in the playoff mix by finishing 8th is a good thing in my opinion.

I don't think that you ought to take an OUFC-centred view of this - how is any team that finished 8th in the Championship going to fare in the Prem?

But then where do you stop? Why not make it the top 8 outside the automatics, and then you would have quarter finals, finals and a final, when even a team in 10th could go up?

This is supposed to be a league competition that tests teams over the course of a season, not a competition to see who can enter a knockout competition at the end of it.

Personally for playoffs I like bottom 2 from.higjer league playing top 2 from lower league
You haven't thought that through have you, that'd mean the higher league gradually sheds a team every season, unless you are doing away with the final entirely and the two semi-final winners go to the top division, the two semi-final losers to the lower division.

So the team that finishes EIGHTH in the regular season that could be someway adrift points wise could get promoted at the expense of the teams that finished 3rd - 7th? Complete pish and a pure money grab.

Why not promote the top two as is, have a single play off between 3rd & 4th and the winners of that go forward to play the winner of 4th & 5th from bottom in the Prem who play a similar one off game.

So this season you could have Spurs vs Millwall for a place in the Prem.

That`ll garner some excitement.............

Your first paragraph is spot on.

As much as that is an entirely sensible solution from someone who actually gives a damn about the sport, it'll never happen for two reasons...

1) The PL teams will never vote for an extra place that could get a team relegated. (self interest and money)
2) The EFL teams will never vote for two fewer play-off places and a shot at glory. (self interest and money)

The simple answer is, I don't care about any other clubs! We probably wouldn't fare very well if we went up after finishing 8th but it'll be a goid worry to have.

Not for me - I've never been able to reconcile the idea of a relegation play-off (or nearly relegated sides included in the play-offs for the division below) as there is no way that any club that has had a shite season could or should be rewarded with a showpiece Wembley final.

The play-offs are all about that reward for those clubs that have had a really strong season and been in the promotion shake up - occasionally supplemented by one side with a late run (that would, in most scenarios, have to have been pretty spectacular).

Any expansion, from above or below, massively devalues that showpiece.

It really is inexcusable (but completely predictable) that THIS change - which no fan was asking for and we already had a perfectly good, extremely popular set up in place - has been strong-armed through with minimal resistance. Yet the warranted extra promotion spot for the Conference, which is WAY overdue going back to when we were in that league and before, rumbles on for decades without resolution.

Self-interest & greed runs our game now. And I despise it.

I also want to know how our club voted. I want to know why our fans weren’t consulted. (I know the answer to both of those questions btw. But it doesn’t stop me wanting it to be acknowledged publicly…)

Maybe @OxVox can provide answers, from those excellent communicators who run OUFC on a day to day basis ?

I doubt many clubs would have voted against this or been too upset about it, let’s face it, it gives clubs a better shot at the promised land (Premier League) & it brings in more TV money.

I feel that some clubs, at least those ran by people of some decent intelligence (not ours), would be careful not to aggravate their own fanbase with their decision.

I’m not sure I mind this actually. It gives the fifth and sixth clubs a worse deal and fresh opportunities for seventh and eighth, but no one said you should have an easy route to promotion for finishing fifth.

Who’d be. Tottenham supporter. 60213 supporters there tonight. Losing 1-3 to Palace and a man down.
Apparently they’ll lose £250m in the event of relegation

Loved the big screens outside the Stadium saying "Together to Glory" for this match with Spurs fans streaming out after the 3rd goal.

It was an insult that Tottenham were ever part of the European Super League. They win a trophy once a decade which is paltry for a club who think they are as big as Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.

It would be glorious to see them relegated.

I want them to be relegated but to win the champions league as well, the holders of world football’s premier club competition having to play at the Kassam next season in a second tier league match would be funny.

No chance of it happening unfortunately.

Amazing they are top.5 in Europe for profit

Could also happen to Forest (I mean, instead, not as well)

I just love the fact Tottenham think they are a big team it would be really funny to see them get relegated

It would be great if burley could find some form and win some games ( highly unlikely)

We could have
West Ham
Wolves
Tottenham
In the championship next season

So will it end up with *teamslike* Wrexham, Derby, Millwall getting into the Premier League only to go straight back down?

Out of last year's promoted teams, Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland. Sunderland look safe, Burnley down, and Leeds may scrape safety.
If Leeds stay up that will be pretty good.
All 3 favourites to go down but 2 staying up?
