Andy James aka Womble.

RIP Andy.
I first encountered Andy on the old away terrace at St James Park, Exeter in January 1984.
I was stood near him and got talking after Andy Thomas had his leg broken by Exeter ‘keeper Len Bond.

RIP. I remember a few years back he had a run of several years without missing a game home and away only to be thwarted by a broken down car and the recovery vehicle to be late as well.

A true Oxford United legend. He had time for everyone and was a true gent. Away games won't be the same without someone shouting "shut up Womble".

I hope the club do something in his honour because Womble really was in a league of his own.

I believe that was either Northampton or Burton away.

RIP sir.

To share another story about what a nice chap he was - he doesn’t know me at all. But one game during the Conference years (I want to say Southport away - definitely a weeknight trek) I brought a couple of friends from uni, who were fascinated by the ‘shut up Womble’ thing. He spent ten minutes talking to them about following Oxford up and down the country and various ‘tales from the road’. To a couple of 20 year old lads who supported PL teams and weren’t used to slogging up and down the roads watching lower (well, at that point non-) league football and didn’t ‘get’ why I did it was an eye opener. Such a nice guy, taking time his own time out of watching the game to talk to them

away trips definitely won’t be the same without seeing him...

Met him 35ish' years ago for the first time, when he used to run the London Road coaches with Mick Brown. I'm sure they had a little hut just outside the London Road end. Me and a mate bought our tickets for our first away trip, Bradford away. There was the normal coach and the posh coach. Well, the normal coach broke down on the way home, and we all piled into the posh coach, albeit sitting in the aisles. I'll never forget there was some porn film on the TV.

RIP Womble, UTM.

Womble, top man. Remember him reffing, selling the London Road Club tickets from the blue box outside the ticket office at the Manor, stewarding on the coaches back in mid-late 90s, stewarding the supporters club entrance post match and always being a top bloke.

You'll be greatly missed mate.... and we know you'll be watching down every week home and away.

So Sad to learn the passing of Andy. We both worked at The Nuffield Press in the seventies/ eighties. Often had drinks in the old supporters club, real football man and Oxford Utd was his life. A gentle friendly man and a pleasure to be around.
I’m sure the club will do something fitting in honour of him, richly deserved.
I think the nickname Womble may of come from Nuffield press, they were big on nicknames and the Wombles of Wimbledon common were big then.

First met Womble on the London Road Club coaches early/mid eighties. Always had time for a chat. Amazed at the number of times me and my dad would bump into him while we were completing the 92 when Oxford weren't playing. He really was football mad. RIP - a true OUFC legend.
