Matos is one of the only players we have had willing to drive forward with the ball since Shandon Baptiste left. He's also a unit who loves to put a tackle in and is very much up for the battle.

Still a bit of a work in progress, and has looked a little inconsistent at times. But that means that he's unlikely to be on the radar of the bigger clubs, and I'm equally not sure he's shown enough for Chelsea to offer an extended deal.

I would imagine that a sensible bid and a 3 (+1) year deal would be enough to get him this summer. Alternatively, a season long loan with a heavy loan fee might give Chelsea the option to get more next summer (looks like he'll be out of contract but a development fee would still apply).
That’s a great point. I was trying to think about who I’d liken him to we really don’t have a player like him who can run through midfield with power and purpose. He was brilliant yesterday although looked like a foul away from being carded at any point.

Karl Robinson placed no value on players of his nature. Zero.

Some of us have been screaming for a Matos type player for years - obviously not at his level but the equivalent at League One (i.e. Panutche Camara).

It's long been an OUFC blindspot. Including for plenty on here - who now wax lyrical about Matos (but haven't quite joined the dots).

I suspect it will be the same if and when we eventually upgrade in the striker department - it'll be all 'this new guy is great, who knew there were players like this available to us'.

Keeping Matos here has to be a huge priority for the summer. It’s easy to forget he’s 20, a year younger than Tyler and the same age as O’Donkor. He’s clearly Championship-level now and will only get better. Oxford feels the perfect fit for him at this stage - somewhere he’ll get lots of minutes playing a style of football that he suits well.

I’d be amazed if we weren’t discussing a permanent or season-long loan for next year with Chelsea, and positive that we’ve taken two from them in consecutive seasons. Hopefully that relationship continues to build.

I’d definitely take him on a permanent, however I am a bit surprised he hasn’t started more games for us. His physicality and running power is something we’ve been missing a lot this season. Specially against QPR I was watching that game thinking the midfield was simply men against boys and couldn’t believe Matos didn’t come on for Brannagan way earlier who was clearly unfit. The job Varane did for QPR is exactly what I’d like to see Matos doing more of.

I would like to sign him permanently, also need a physical presence who can dominate games is a much needed addition to our MF options.

Peterborough’s CM Hector Kyprianou is one that’s been linked with us before. 6’ 4” tall and 23 years old. Scored their second goal today to beat Brum in the league trophy final

Agree with everything until the final sentence.

If we're lauding Matos (as we should) as a highly talented 20 year-old with a great pedigree, coming to us from a traditional Premier League power, who has a particular skillset that we've been severely lacking and has had a loan at Championship level before........wouldn't his striker equivalent be, well, Dane Scarlett?

Which is my way of saying that, yes, we clearly need to upgrade the striker department with someone who is a better finisher and has better ball-retention skills - but I don't think that's as easy as you're making out.

As always, identifying where we need to strengthen is by far the easiest bit.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us looking overseas for another 9 come the summer which will no doubt trigger all the bargain basement brigade because they might not have heard of them.

But we live in a world where Hull paid £2m+ for Kyle Joseph, so… 🤷‍♂️

QUITE!

Still can’t get over that! And still yet to score after almost 800mins.

Similarly, Argyle forked out 3.5m on Baidoo who has made something like 5 starts for them.

Crazy
Which highlights the risks with bringing in players from overseas. On paper he looked a good bit of business.

The same with the CF that Derby brought in from Scandinavia.

I guess they’re more ‘value for money’ for a reason. This is where the recruitment departments earn their corn.

People keep referencing this as if it's the going rate for a bang average L1 striker. It's not.

That's simply bad business - some sort of January panic buy - and certainly not our benchmark.

For balance, we also live in a world where Coventry paid just £1m for Viktor Gyökeres.

I don't expect us to do that well - but I do expect us to find some successful middle ground. It's literally what an extensive recruitment team is employed for.

If Joseph isn’t the benchmark, who is?

Of course we should be scouring the continent - or the planet - for the next Gyokeres or Isidor, but so is everyone else. And for every Gyokeres there are many, many more gambles that don’t pay off and are never heard of again.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t be trying to find the next undiscovered star - of course we should! - but they are far and away the exception to the rule.

He’s somebody often likes to lecture other fans. I have a long memory, particularly regarding a specific Josh Murphy lecture delivered early last season.

Of course I'd like to be able to offer some critique on your posting history too, but I genuinely can't recall anything of note that you have ever contributed to this forum.

Sorry about that.

Who knows, we might already have the striker.
Chap called Ole Romeny.

Honestly, I still don't know what we've got with Romeny. There's games where he looks awesome (e.g. Coventry) and games where he's utterly invisible (e.g. QPR).

I think he's generally looked better when pushed further forward, and not so great in the 10.

But is he a potential double digit goalscorer at this level? Still too early to say.

Agree.
At the moment I am.not sure that he should start. Maybe next season he will have settled down in the club and become more consistent.
At times he looks a little lightweight, but it is early days.

When he plays 9, he looks a different player. He can't play 10 - he pushes on too much wanting to play 9, our midfield get overrun, the opposition dominate and he sees none of the ball.

He's shown enough to me at 9 to start him ahead of Harris.

Hasn't he always been a 10 and wide player?
If thats right, it is a bit odd if he can't play as a 10?
I am.not convinced that he is good enough to be our 9.
We will know more when he plays more minutes, but regardless of where he plays he needs to show the effort of Harris and hopefully his performances improve

Wasn’t Harris always a wide player before he came here? Isn’t it a bit odd that he’s always struggled when played out wide for us?

Romeny has played as well or better than Harris has as a striker this season. Who knows how many goals he’d have if he’d got as many starts and minutes as Harris has had…

I am.not sure that he would have got that many ( and not sure that he would have closed down as much as Harris)
Listen, maybe Romeny is the answer. I am just not as sure as you seem to be, that he has proved anything in any position yet.

Need to pull out all the stops to sign him on a permanent deal in the summer.

Similar to Brown in the sense he’s an absolute warrior, that mixed with bags of strength and energy, plenty of skill, and no slouch either.

He’s one of the few players in this squad who has the ability to drive forward with the ball at this level.

At first I was worried he was a walking red card, but he was very disciplined in that regard last night, plays on the edge for sure, but you can see he enjoys his work.
