I think this will be a good signing. We need someone in midfield with a good engine in them. Looks like fitting the bill. Welcome Alex - make it happen :D

Welcome.

I really wish the guy well.

I can't help being very cautious on this though. We have seen plenty of young premiership talent come to us on loan before and they have been complete dross to the point where you wonder how they ever generated any interest from the likes of Man City et al.

However, really hoping this is like one of the other signings more of the Roofe, Lundstram ilk.

Good luck young man, hope you smash it.
Assuming youโ€™ve not bothered to find out anything about him before postingโ€ฆ
I think heโ€™ll be fine..

No. That is a fair comment.

I had a very quick look and saw a young premier league player with one PL game, a couple of England U 20โ€™s and a loan spell with relegated Huddersfield.

But it sounds from those that know much more about him than I, that he is a promising loan signing.

I am looking forward to seeing him and hope he makes a fantastic impact during his time here.

To me his play style and what weโ€™ve seen from the clips and when he played versus us in the tin pot trophy game is that heโ€™s a younger / more energetic version of Erhahon (Lincoln CDM) a lot have said we should be looking at to add to the team. To me, thatโ€™s the sort of midfielder we need to connect the dots within the midfield. A combination of Brannagan, Matos, Vaulks and El Miz, I think is very good with the key word being energy. Also, I really like the way he received the ball under pressure and was sturdy and used his body well.

Hope we can sign Matos on a perm. Best full debut I can remember and the best player on the pitch bar Hannibal (who has amassed $17.5m in transfers at the age of 22) on Tuesday. Showed plenty in his sub appearances too.

Come Augustโ€”and assuming he's not soldโ€”Goodrham will be our only regular starter under the age of the Championship-average 25.9 years old. We have the third oldest squad in the league*, behind Wednesday and Preston, and it would be advantageous to have more starters in their physical peak (22-25).

*Sunderland, Sheffield United and Burnley have three of the youngest four starting XIs in the league, with Stoke being the other.

Would love it if we could. I can't help but think that he'll be one they'll want to feature in the future for them. Not the finished article, but you could see him becoming a Makalele/Essien type of player before too long. That said, they're not short on cash or players so they may not be fussed if the right bid comes in.

I do love this forum. One start and we need to sign him permanently. A drop in form over a few games like Goodrham and the chorus will be to get rid.

If he keeps up the great performances and we do try and sign him permanently, the fact that we are able to get Jamie Cumming from them after a loan spell is a good sign.

Another that needs a song...

Wherever he's playing,
He'll cover the ground,
And you better be watchin,
Be watchin,
Forever in motion,
The kid he can play,
Oh he's the greatest,
The greatest,

Ooooooh,
Alex is on Fire

Out of interest has a song that has been suggested on here ever made it to the terraces and stuck?

Was chatting to a Chelsea fan who had a pretty good knowledge of their youth team.

He was pissed that they had loaned him to us, because he wanted to see him playing some minutes for their first team this season (he had some no so flattering opinions on some of Chelsea's current senior midfielders.......)

Now of course no guarantees that the Chelsea management have the same opinions as one random fan......but if they think there's even a 10% chance that he's a first team player for them in the future, there's absolutely no way we're going to be able to afford the fee to sign him permanently.

A season long loan for 2025/26 if we get him some game time now and stay up? Maybe.

I've found Chelsea fans (and Prem fans in general) to be hyperbolic about their youth teamers. A little over a decade ago, McEachran was the second coming of Xavi, then a few years ago it was Billy Gilmour.

Matos has four minutes for Chelsea's first team, three of which were in the EFL cup. The likes of 19-year-old Sam Rak Sakyi and 17-year-old Ollie Harrison come with bigger reputations than Matos, with the former already getting meaningful European minutes for Chelsea this season. Harvey Vale looks a very promising player and was a top performer for them in PL2 and they just let him go for a small fee (predominantly add-ons supposedly).

If he consistently puts in performances like Tuesday then we'll have no chance, but I imagine we'll get similar to what Huddersfield got โ€“ flashes of dominance, mixed in with the naivety of exuberant youth.

Proper tidy player, knows when to slow the game down and can make a real nuisance of himself if he wants to
