Had a fascinating football chat with a Man Utd scarf seller outside Old Trafford today. ( will answer the obvious question first, was buying a car with my daughter from a franchise directly next door 😊).

I’m waiting around, he asks if I want a scarf. I tell him nah thanks, not here for the game, I’m Oxford anyway! Reminded him of the 80s league cup win over three ties (my only visit to old Trafford). Get this, he remembered it, not only that, he remembered our players, players that came in later during this period, said we had a brilliant team then. Respect given! He said although a huge man united fan he was also a big football fan generally and followed the entire football league. Brilliant chap to talk too.

Still didn’t buy a scarf though šŸ˜‰

I can’t understand anyone over the age of 16 who has two English clubs with Oxford and another big club. Make your mind up.

I get local clubs like I could go and watch Godalming / Guildford / Woking / Aldershot.

What do you mean?

I know what you mean....but why raise it here?

Presumably for some people watching Oxford is like you watching Woking

But going back to the original post, that's a really lovely story, thanks for sharing. Funny when you meet people like that, who have what to their peers may be obscure and meaningless knowledge, but to a whole group of other people is a fantastic memory.

I’m not about Marks response. Can only assume he didn’t read it properly. Not a problem though.

@Emilio yes, that’s why I wanted to post, it’s often said that fans of premier league clubs have no interest in lower leagues and yet here was one bloke, a die hard Man U fan who was even correcting me on the year we beat them in the cup! Really nice bloke.

While I agree that I don’t understand 2 team fans, this post wasn’t about supporting another team.

I am an Oxford fan but will follow what’s going on with the rest of the football league, including the premier league. I also follow the Italian league, German league, Scottish league and Spanish league. There will be games that I watch that I would rather another team to win but I don’t support anyone but Oxford.

It’s possible to ā€œfollow ā€œ other teams whilst actively supporting one .
I was born in Manchester and went to Old Trafford and also Edgeley Park until late 1963.
I then lived in Southampton and Derby, before moving to Oxford in 1969.
I’m an ardent OUFC supporter home and away and live and breath the club .

Ah an incomer!!

Great post. I sometimes wonder how other fans might have perceived our glory years.
Also did we ever get fans switching allegiances and following the yellows instead of their original team?
I’ve a friend who ā€˜dumped’ Oxford when we sold Aldridge as he was so distraught; now an ardent Everton follower! I could never ever understand that.

Staying off topic, whilst you should only ever have one team, I do find it difficult to watch a game without having a little skin in the game. Being a complete neutral makes it feel like you're watching a training game. I might pick a side because I prefer them to win, or prefer the opposition to lose, or because of some players connection to Oxford etc. I had tickets to the 2012 Olympic semifinal between Mexico and Japan and choose Mexico because there was some very attractive Latino women in our section! I watched a game in Gambia and support Steve Biko FC because of the name alone.

They are never "my club" but I think that all sport is much better if you tie your colours to a mast on a game by game basis.

Yes definitely. I always have some vague preference based on underdog’s status, style of play, or other associations. I can’t understand individual sports like tennis though, my wife always has a preference for one player or another while to me they are fairly faceless.

To be fair, I will always pick a side/individual in all sports. Every Olympics I've found myself cheering on some random bmx'er because they're in yellow or a canoeist because the other one beat the Brit in sn earlier round. I've even wanted a jock to win in the tennis, but thankfully the pressure is now off on that one!

Going off topic from my original post, my ā€œotherā€ team is Raith Rovers. Why? Born in Oxford, genes from Kirkcaldy.

I played a charity match at Woking a couple of years back (and scored the opening goal). Nice ground, for what it is. After that I went to a couple of games, and the atmosphere was good fun.

Always enjoyed going to Woking in the conference days. They’ve a nice set up there.

That said, I think I’m still drying out after getting absolutely soaked in the FA Cup game there on a desperately wet midweek evening, a few seasons ago.

Agreed, the most weird match for me was South Korea v Brazil at the Olympics. Only 10% of the fans must have actually had any stake in the game, so the atmosphere was just bizarre.

Usually, if I've been taken to a match by a mate then I'll root for whichever side they support. It's very uncommon for me to go watch a match where I've got absolutely 0 reason to cheer for either side.

But yes, I only support Oxford, and I only ever will, but I do follow the results of sides from places I've lived in (Brighton, HƤcken, Ternana, Cagliari). They're not my "other clubs", but just sides I hope do well in their respective leagues and cups.

Raith Rovers was one of my old man's "2 Scottish teams" he vaguely rooted for, purely due to their slight similarity to our surname (Wroth). The other being Arbroath.

Back in July 2006, I was holidaying in Weymouth. On a late Saturday afternoon, I decided to go for a pint in a pub near the Train station. I was surprise to see the pub full of Bournemouth fans. They had been playing Weymouth that afternoon in a pre season friendly. I got talking to a few of them, decent enough blokes they were too.

When they found out I was an Oxford fan, they said how surprised and disappointed they were that we had been relegated out of the football league. They were very complimentary of Oxford Utd and how they always had tough games against us. That will always stick with me.
