If it happened now...

We lost ? WTF?? Never going up playing that rubbish. Bud Houghton just can't hack it at this level. Atkinson too slow.

Arthur Turner OUT ?

And I well remember not being able to find out the score!
No ceefax in those days, and we didn't have a TV anyway. No James Alexander Gordon reading the results on the wireless, no phone for my dad to ring someone and ask. Couldn't even cycle down to Witney station to get the OM 'Green Un' because they'd closed the line a few weeks before. So I had to wait until Sunday to get sight of a copy of yesterday's 'Green Un'. And even then you never really trusted whether they had typed the result correctly.
Character building stuff.

Edit - Apologies. Apparently a chap named James Webstser did actually read out the results on the Light Programme, but I must either have missed that or not known it was on, we'd always depended on the Green Un in the Southern League

18 August 1962, Barrow 3 Oxford United 2, first Football League match.
we scored 2 away goals though :sneaky: ... we'd go on to beat them at the Manor in the same season 4-1 ... and 2 seasons on (I think?) we'd notch up our record highest league win (?) , beating them 7-0 at the Manor

I really should have opened a Werthers Original before reading that post - no offence ?

A game I remember well. On the way to the game, my dad said "I think we'll score at least 6 tonight" No one believed him!!! He was quite good at football predictions as a few years later he won a bit on the pools!!!

Had no idea even Oxford had a green ‘un.

I had the pleasure of catching the final years of a local green ‘un, albeit it was in Scotland so the first 16 utterly pointless pages covered a standard akin to the Isthmian 3rd Division. Really enjoyed the paper seller coming to the pub after University sport to learn that Oxford had capitulated at home once again.

From memory Aberdeen’s Green Final died a death along with United’s Division 3 status in 2001.
