Funny if we're in for both Zak Johnson and Henry Fieldson.

It turns out they've been partners in Sunderland's defence from the Under-11s up to the Under-21s.

Especially when you've got very capable cover at centre back in Sam Long, it would make a lot of sense to bring in at least one defender who won't count as a senior player (as is the case for both of these), to give ourselves a bit of wiggle room in the transfer market but also help our long-term growth.

I'm excited to think that we have five senior players under 23 right now (Spencer, McDonnell, Goodrham, Emakhu, Mills), with the prospect of two or three more coming in (such as Lisbie maybe), whose development could benefit from a season in League One, and who would give us a much stronger base to build on should we achieve promotion.

You look at Sunderland this year (who went from the youngest average XI in the Championship to the second youngest in the Premiership). Or Cardiff, who'll be in a similar position this season (only Peterborough had a younger average XI in League One).

It's a much healthier path to walk.

I wouldn't want to rely on under 21's but adding players of this calibre to the squad as extras will be a real sign of intent if you're looking at upgrading Golding and Negru for the likes of Fieldson and Johnson.

I know this is easier said than done but this has to be the approach we take as a club. We had some expensive veterans in the squad when we were in the Championship. The strategy has to pick off and develop younger players where we can.

I know this is easier said than done but this has to be the approach we take as a club. We had some expensive veterans in the squad when we were in the Championship. The strategy has to pick off and develop younger players where we can.

Agree with this approach. It would be great to get straight back into the Championship, first attempt, but realistically, probably a step too far, too soon. Not saying it shouldn't be done, look at what Des achieved out of the blue. However, the financial set up is, currently, weak when looked at from the EFL regs point of view. With the new stadium the finances are far more flexible and, if Erik wants to push the limits, we could find promotion to be far more sustainable and, from our prospective as fans, far more enjoyable.
Building a squad and getting the Academy producing players ready and able to step up has to be a far better approach. I suspect that our new chairman has been set the task of improving the playing side to a much more resilient standard.

That seems crazy to me (not least from Stoke's point of view).

Would FFP (and the 'pure profit' rule on academy players) explain it?

Alan Nixon was saying Stoke wanted £2.5m last summer.

It's a lot, but the young man's a proper goalscorer.

Not sure we can afford to miss out.

Scored 11 in 38 games in 2 loan spells at Wycombe and Stockport. Season before 15 in 22 games for Walsall who were walking L2 at the time he was recalled.

Not necessarily prolific at L1 level but for me the impressive thing is that at 19/20 he has played for 3 teams and has slotted in reasonably well. It would be interesting to see if playing for one club he could get a good run of goals with that stability.

A couple of injuries, plus veteran strikers (Wootton and Woodrow) hitting form when he was available.

There were a lot of substitute appearances and games played out of position.

Still, his scoring frequency (goals per 90) was 0.52 in all competitions (not far off Dom Ballard's 0.55).

Obviously he's not the finished article (and Stoke have given him 24 appearances in the Championship, presumably deciding he's not yet at that level), but at 6'4" he's a serious target, strong in the air and shoots with both feet.

Definitely the profile we could do with.

Thank god Erick doesn’t have the same attitude as this. I’d be disappointed if we’re only challenging for the play-off places, and I don’t think the owner will take too kindly to mediocrity given the sums he’s investing.

The defeatist ‘little Oxford’ mentality needs to end, we’re not a Conference side anymore. We got promoted with a worse squad, why are we throwing the towel in in June when we already have a better one?

Definitely the profile we could do with.

Both Barney Stewart and Nathan Lowe appear to have similar profiles to Lankshear in both age and physicality. The difference would hopefully be that they would be our player and not a loan.

It’s promising if we are looking at this type of CF.

So just one goal fewer than Lankshear did for us this season, in 8 fewer games while at Wycombe and Stockport, followed by 3 goals more in fewer than half for Walsall.

I'm not saying he's anywhere near Lankshear's standard, but if we're using the Willometer as the metric for successful young striker out on loan by goals per game, this guy has exceeded that (respectively).

A very exciting product at that level.

Reportedly Hull need to raise £6m this month, so Burstow could go soon (most likely to Bolton).

Seen fresh stories about Barney Stewart, after Falkirk signed a striker, mainly linking WBA and Lincoln.

Maybe we'll compete with lower-end Championship clubs this summer, but the prospect of losing out to (#teamslike) Wycombe for Lowe is making me anxious.

Ryan Oné on a season-long loan would be a real boost (8-figure sums being quoted), but definitely agree with @yellowbow about preferring a permanent signing. If we get back up or if we don't, it feels like there's a unique opportunity in this window to secure and develop a promising young striker, who could ultimately make the position his own.
