We’ve sold two players towards the end who showed a lack of professionalism and respect to the club. And in return managed to get 2 free loans in that are highly regarded by their parent clubs.

Yes, in theory Erick can inject enough qualifying equity to get us out of the embargo. Lovely. Problem solved. Pop the champagne.
Except it isn’t solved at all.
This season Oxford get the temporary 65% allowance because we’ve just come down from the Championship. If turnover is £10m, that gives us £6.5m of base SCMP room.
Next season, if we’re still in League One, that drops to the normal 50%.
Same £10m turnover suddenly gives you just £5m.
So if the wage/manager/agent cost base hasn’t come down and turnover hasn’t gone up, congratulations: you’ve spent millions in equity getting compliant this year only to discover the hole is even bigger next year.
If costs were around £9.5m, you’d be looking at roughly a £4.5m gap next season before player trading. At 50%, that could mean needing around £9m of fresh qualifying equity just to stand still.
And then what? Do it again the year after? And again after that?
At some point even the “just write another cheque” strategy meets basic arithmetic.
Owner equity can bridge a gap. It cannot magically make an unsustainable cost base sustainable.
The long-term answer is painfully boring because it’s also painfully obvious:
Increase turnover.
Reduce wages and other SCMP costs.
Everything else is buying time with somebody else’s cheque book.

It is an apparent sense of realism that if something doesn't fundamentally change a lot of clubs will either go into administration or disappear.
Whilst the timing is terrible for us, the approach to make tier 3 and 4 football move towards sustainability is in the long term to be applauded.
In reality the whole of the Championship is more of a financial basket case and getting their may bring a higher quality of football but significantly increases the sustainability risk as I think we have found out.

Not that it’s the biggest issue that faces us currently but anyone with ambitions of promotion in the next 3 seasons needs a reality check.

This won’t get fixed financially within 12 months, it’s going to take a couple of years minimum.

To be honest, I would be more than happy to sit in mid table league 1 mediocrity for a couple of seasons, if it meant that, once the stadium is up and running and we have a stable revenue source of our own, we can make a go of promotion again on a much more self sustainable footing.

Once thing this summer has shown is that I’d rather watch Oxford tussling with Wycombe for 11th for a few seasons than watch us go out of existence because we have been relying to heavily on the shareholders daddys trust funds

I haave absolutely no idea what rules/restrictions we're having to abide to with the EFL clearly ratifying this deal.

Everything published suggests we could only staff up when we fell below 23 permitted players, but a loaned out player counts to that figure.

Mills Out, Andrews In got us back to 23.

Only thing I can think of is we've been able to do some manipulation of Kent's contract or the K-League has been deemed not an equivalent level to L1.

Outside of that then we must be getting some form of special dispensation but neither club or EFL have explained and no journos seem to have been able to explain either.

That the Championship has different rules to L1/L2 is baking in the gap between them and is ridiculous. Should be the same for all.

From this season the Championship has a new financial system.
The simple version is that clubs can spend up to 85% of their relevant football income on squad costs.
That includes player wages, manager costs, agent fees and the yearly accounting cost of transfer fees.
So if a Championship club has £20m of relevant income, 85% gives it a basic squad cost allowance of £17m.
Owners can also put in extra equity to increase that allowance.
The Championship allows up to £15m of owner equity in one season, with a maximum of £33m over three years.
So in theory a club with £20m income could have a £17m basic allowance and then increase that further with owner equity.
The big difference compared with League One is that the Championship gives clubs much more room.
League One is normally based around 50% of turnover, with 65% for a club in its first season after relegation from the Championship.
So strangely, a club can actually have more financial freedom after getting promoted to the Championship than it had while trying to get promoted from League One.
That is why the League One rules can feel so restrictive, especially for a relegated Championship club carrying bigger wages.

I am pretty certain it was not the reaction the EFL expected or wanted.

So potentially we could have got a loan in to replace Romeny too?

I think at that point the EFL reaction would have been no, they are amending the rules as they go along. I think they realise we have been dealt a pretty unfair hand for this season and are trying to at least give us a chance. I suspect a lot of negotiations have been occurring at the EFL. A realisation has sunk in that the 65% limit for relegated clubs is going to cause a major problem each year whoever gets relegated.

Jorge Lorenzo regularly dislocated his shoulder and didn't lose his arm, whilst Cal Crutchlow rode the British GP with a fractured leg on the Sunday after fracturing it on the Friday and still has both legs. CC has even raced this season as a 40 year old.

It’s going to be very telling to see if he’s involved on Saturday. If he’s as unfit as he’s made out then it should take minimum a month to be involved, I have my doubts though and feel he’ll be training like crazy now that he’s gotten his way. No matter which way you swing it though, there’s not going to be a situation where his behaviour has been justified. I said this yesterday and I’ll repeat it… no one was expecting him to be die hard Oxford through and through like Brannagan, but we can expect the bare minimum which is put effort in and show the club some respect

Same with cyclists, Tyler Hamilton ground down eleven of his teeth to the root after crashing in Stage 1 of the 2002 Giro. He fractured his shoulder and head of the arm. Albeit on a lot of drugs, he raced a further 2,000+ miles over the next few weeks and finished second on GC. Talk about “flogging it”.

You’re trying to be devils advocate here and while I get the full picture won’t be known by the fans, it’s extremely telling how Ramsey switched up from protecting players to being fed up with them.

It’s all well and good saying the club should have been more transparent with fans and players about the embargo, but the conduct of throwing toys out of the pram still cannot be justified. Giving him speculative excuses simply allows the behaviour to be excused and it sends a dangerous message to any of the younger players. They’re seeing that they can refuse to play if they don’t get what they want
