Away Match Build-Up 26/10/24 - Championship: Sunderland v OUFC

It’s going to be a tough test, but the championship this season has a feel of anyone can beat anyone. No real standout teams to me, not like last season. The only downside is we are missing a few of our attacking players out wide, which makes me think we could go wing backs!

I like this as well - allows us to play both our strikers, who should have complementary skillsets, in their best position, and move Goodrham inside and give him a lot of freedom. Kioso and Leigh are both well suited to the wingback position and give us pace and power on the flanks against what is seemingly a very talented young Sunderland side.

I like it more than the alternative, which is sticking with our same formation and starting either Dale or Ebiowei (neither of whom have shown enough in their sub appearances to make me think they warrant a start) or playing Sparky on the flanks.

Can see this being a bit of a chastening one. It feels like the level of our performances has tailed off a bit and, combined with (or more probably because of) a growing injury list, I think this will probably be too much for us. Sunderland are flying.

I like the idea of using the game as an opportunity to try a different formation. I think our standard formation requires at least one rapid winger to pull the oppo defence around a bit and to pin back opposition fullbacks. With PP, Edwards, Kioso and, to an extent, Phillips all out, I don’t see us as having the outlet we would need if we put in Dale or Ebiowei. Having a back 5, with Tyler at CAM and Vaulks and maybe El Miz sitting, would give us a decent midfield to contain and hit them on the break imo.

Still, I watched some of their game at Luton midweek, and they do look bloody good. That Rigg looks great and the LW will give Kioso a real test.

3-1 Sunderland I reckon, I’m afraid.

Why is it OUFC are frowned upon in every amateur pundits view? The short answer is, and I've said it a numerous amount of times that it's all to do with capacity end of.

If we were sat where we are tonight in the league with attendances of around 15k I'm absolutely sure we would be taken not so lightly. No f*cker out there repeatedly harps on about Bournemouth and their sh*te capacity - it's just us with our 3 sided stadium and I'm sure some of our fans constant comments about our rented home just adds to this fire!

It's time for everyone (our support) to forget about our poor stadium and status (capacity wise) and for us to believe in ourselves a whole lot more than we do atm. We are a championship side ffs and if it was Bolton and not us up from the playoffs nobody would be f*cking them sideways the same way as other fans do to us. And the reason is...capacity, aided and abetted with yes the three stands!

Remember, with this new stadium on the horizon of the 'future' we will again be in another below average capacity category for this league and we (OUFC) will no doubt expect another full on onslaught (from other fans) of us building yet another stadium with a limited increase in capacity and this will unfortunately still be used as a big stick to beat us with us again.

Onto tomorrow, we most probably will have the luxury to be able to have 6 seats to every away fan there!

Absolute kudos to everyone who turns out tomorrow.

I was in Bury Knowle Park that day with my mum and my nan. I was 8 but I remember the noise was incredible.

Extraordinary how many of those teams are still sat there in Div 2. At least we've been in four divisions during that time.

We were always going to be ‘little Oxford’ this season but there isn’t anything that we can do about others view of the team and club. We have already shown teams like Norwich, Burnley and West Brom that we are no mugs and aren’t here just to make up the numbers.

Tomorrow is a tough game due to how well Sunderland are doing, nothing to do with our stadium or the size of our home attendances.

I fully believe that we can sneak a point tomorrow but we have to accept that this league is a lot harder than league 1 and there are games, such as tomorrow, which will be a lot harder than others.

From what I’ve seen Sunderland remind me a bit of Pompey last season, I’m not sure they’re the best side in the division but they have acquired that habit of winning football matches. There probably isn’t as much between the sides as it might look but we are battling sky high momentum and confidence, as well as a decent enough side. A draw will be a fantastic result. Heart says a 1-1 draw, head says a narrow defeat and everything still intact for some more winnable games ahead. It’s going to be a long day tomorrow, have worked the odd day in Sunderland over the years but never visited Roker Park or Stadium of Light so a new ground to tick off!

I believe this is one of the reasons why we are still unbeaten at home, because teams and their fans turn up just expecting to turn us over.

On a side note the stadium has 4 sides otherwise we would be playing on a triangle (ironically we soon will be).

5-0 Sunderland then we beat them in the play off final in May 2-0.

Although if we take our away tanking this early it gives us time to win the league.

God, what we’d have given this time last year to be given the opportunity to play in these sorts of games again at this level.
Still have to pinch myself, remind ourselves that this is what we all dreamed about back in those dark days; could we survive those tumultuous years and get back to where we belong.
Yes we may lose tomorrow, we might draw and crazier things have happened than nicking an historic win but whatever happens - savour the day. Drink it in. Relish every moment.
