General 2024-25 - Squad list submitted

I'd say there's a good chance we won't see Greg Leigh against Stoke either. Honduras vs Jamaica kicks off at 3am Wednesday morning UK time. We might find out what the plan is sooner rather than later.

I might be wrong but iirc Thorniley played in a back 3 for Blackpool in the Championship. Clearly 3 at the back is an option, but have we actually seen Buckingham use this formation while he’s been at the club?

I don’t really want to see either Brown, Thorniley or Long for that matter playing as a conventional leftback, however either might be more suited to that role in a DB system rather than say in a system that demands more on the fullback to push on.

I've been pretty vocal about Brown not being a proper left back in the past and much more suited to playing centrally but I'd rather him there than Thorniley, who I don't really trust. It depends on Nelson as well but by all accounts he's very talented, it's quite possible there's no dropoff in quality if he comes in for Brown and Brown moves over. Of course if Nelson is a dud then it's a different question but in this situation it's basically a straight choice between having Thorniley or Nelson in the team and I'd imagine the answer isn't a guy who most were saying would be one of those who didn't make the 25 man squad.
All depends on how much you want to rearrange the back four.
You could move Brown, one of our most consistent performers so far at CB to LB.
Bring in Nelson at CB to replace the experience and performance of Brown.
It's asking a lot of a raw inexperienced lad to come in and perform to the standard that Brown has shown.
Or do you leave Brown at CB and make one change by bringing a more experienced player in Thorniley into the LB position.
A position he has played for Blackpool in the Championship.
I guess we all have a differing way at solving the issue if it arises.
I'm sure Des has got all scenarios covered.

I think I'd rather Brown stayed at CB, and we gave Thorniley a go in that circumstance. But I'll probably leave it up to Des to decide.

I don't think there's any evidence that Thorniley's a more effective LB than Brown. I understand you wouldn't want to break up the Moore-Brown partnership, but Nelson hasn't come in to sit on the bench whilst Thorniley - a player who struggled for minutes in League One - starts ahead of him.

My question is, if Bennett had not got injured, was des:
planning on registering thorniley anyway and only added Edwards to fill the last slot in the hope he might be able to contribute at some stage?
or
planning on registering Edwards anyway and the Bennett injury just meant a reprieve for thorniley?

It's not really a question of taking him out of CB to play LB, but we haven't brought Nelson in to sit on a bench, a player who Leicester fans were saying should have been a part of their PL squad. Having Brown on the bench as an option that can play at CB or LB is incredibly useful.
You're not seriously advocating dropping Brown to the bench to play a relatively inexperienced lad in his place.
Consensus of opinion amongst fans is that Brown has probably been our most consistent performer so far.
Again opinion suggests his all round game has gone up a level.
I would imagine Nelson will only see action through either injury, suspension or loss of form.
There's no way Brown will be dropped to accommodate Nelson.

Indeed, but I can't understand the clamour to replace Brown with Nelson.
Ok accepted if Des decides to play Brown at LB because of injury etc, then Nelson becomes the obvious replacement.

What if Nelson is actually a better player than Brown which the management team can see in training?

Where have I said that? I was replying to a comment that said Thorniley should be playing at LB instead of Brown to maintain the Moore-Brown partnership.

Also this 'relatively inexperienced lad' is a England U20 international, comes highly-rated from Leicester and played a handful of games (and scored) in a Leicester side that won the league last season. To suggest he'll only play due to the circumstances of other defenders is a pretty ludicrous statement to make.

Let's stop talking players down as some 'lad' just because you've never seen him personally play.

I think we’re a bit wary of ‘lads’ after the likes of Sonny Perkins

Read your last sentence.
Nelson played nine games for Leicester last season. That appears to me that he filled in when required, not a first choice.
He may well be an U20 player and represented his country.
Brown is a full international player, has played at Championship level and played a full season in a team that gained promotion.
He has amassed many games at League 1 and Championship level. He's now regarded as an experienced pro.
Nelson has 9 senior games with Leicester and two loans to league 2 teams.
The experts agree he's got good potential to become a decent player.
That's why we signed him on loan.
If anyone thinks he's going to dislodge Brown from CB in a straight swop they need to give their head a wobble.

Saying 'having Brown on the bench would be a useful option to cover CB and LB' is not the same as saying I think Brown should be immediately dropped for Nelson. He 'filled in when required' for Leicester because they were top of the league and were the eventual champions. If you think that he'll play a similar amount of games for us this season and not 30+ then maybe you need to give your head a wobble.
