Certainly at the end of 2016/2017, with the names that were being linked to us before Appleton left, there was a good feeling that we were being readied for a very genuine tilt at promotion the following season.
We were indeed, until Slippery got a bit fresh. That’s why Appleton left - promises about ambition and resources were left in ruins. Harvey Barnes and Mason Mount were joining on loan and Liam Lindsay had already travelled down to sign on a permanent. All three changed their minds and went elsewhere once it became clear that Appleton was on the move and the club situation was suddenly unstable.

Totally agree with this.

Very hard to find replacement who can fulfil a similar role. Successful sides do not require 11 players on the pitch to be creative and forward thinking. You need players willing to sacrifice themselves for the team, plug gaps and spot danger. This is something Gorrin does very well- if he was also very good playing forward with the ball he would not be in league one.
What some people need to do is consider that this is a player that has just missed nearly a whole season injured, so Oxford have done the right thing by offering an extended contract. If another club want to take a bigger risk by offering a bigger/longer contract, then that’s up to them. There is a chance that he may not get back to the level that he was before.

It's always difficult after an ACL injury how often do players come back from that injury better. The board do keep coming up with a fantastic squad but it's up to the management team to put it together. There are alot of good teams in league one this year it will be fantastic if we are up there again.

Wow, I hadn't heard of the Barnes + Mount moves before, further evidence of Appleton's keen eye for a loan player. Not trying to sound like an Eales fan boy, but surely them two as well as Lindsay wouldn't have been cheap? Obviously our transfers went a tad worse (and cheaper!) when Pep came in, but sounds pretty ambitious up to then.

They wouldn’t have been, which is exactly why none of them happened once he needed to tighten his belt. If he had kept his belt nice and tight in other ways things would have been rather different.

If you go around offering your hot dogs for free, you will occasionally end up with sausages wedged into an unexpected bun or two.

I do not want his hot dogs banded around this forum willy-nilly.

Was in the shire today visiting my parents. Dad who is a season ticket holder at Banbury, watches home and away was really impressed with Golding, likened him to a young Van Dyke. High praise indeed. He’s hoping that OUFC loan him back to Banbury next season. Maybe this kid might be the real deal and another CB that could make us a lot of money in the future after helping us to the championship.

17/18 - points 56, goal difference -5
18/19 - points 60, goal difference -6
19/20 - points 60, goal difference +24
20/21 - points 74, goal difference +21
21/22 - points 76, goal difference +23

I’d suggest that over the last 5 years the club hasn’t been standing still and in fact has moved forward a lot.
That’s just points total without even factoring in how much the club has progressed off the field with the training ground and infrastructure.
19/20 obviously finished early, point per game wise we would have ended up on 78 or 79 so we did worse in the years since. I still don't see this as important as finishing position, ie points in relation to other teams. 74 points and getting in the playoffs is a million miles better than 76 points, finishing 8th and missing out on the playoffs by 7 points.
