Right, so after 70 pages of considered input I think I've got the gist of what we need to do:

Go: Winnall ( old, crocked), Hanson (crocked, high wages), Mousinho (old, crocked), Henry (past his best, didn't shoot), mcguane (flatters to deceive), Kane (weak, need more than just long passes), Whyte (no composure Infront of goal), Holland (passenger too often), Seddon (not a defender), Cooper (not settled), Stevens (not pregressed, distribution, long shots), C Brown (can do better), Forde (can't get in the side when everyone injured), Sykes (high treason)

Keep, but only as backup: Eastwood (old, slow, quiet), Long (gone backwards, part of this season's leaky defence, but utility defender), Moore (slow, not imposing, part of this season's leaky defence), McNally (young, naive, part of this season's leaky defence), Gorrin (old, crocked, often ineffective), Williams (utility player, not a starter), Taylor (can't play lone striker, disappears from games), Baldock (injury prone), Bodin (utility wide/#10), M Browne (injury worries)

Keep, as starter: Brannigan (except half the championship are after him, so will probably go)

Bring In (starters): GK, RB, LB, CB, CB, DM, CM, CM, WL, WR, FW

Right, simple, go get'em Karl, and if you can get them all done in the first week so that they can settle and all be ready to work as a finely tuned unit from the start of pre-season and we can be seen to be showing ambition, then that would be good.......

Spot on Mooro.
And as KR only signs wingers he will probably sign 10 wingers!
And anybody strong and powerful are in ( regardless of whether they are any good at football)

This is it for me. The reason we blew the second half of the season wasn’t because we lost Gorrin - it’s because we didn’t find a replacement for his position. It caused us to play without a DM or have Kane playing a pseudo-version of the role.

I’ve seen a lot of criticism of the defence on here. It’s easy to say ‘we conceded a lot therefore the defence and ‘keeper are rubbish’ but so much of our usual 4-3-3 relied on support from a DM. Whether we’re going 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 for next season we need a DM - preferably two. It’s a specialist position and can’t be overlooked again.

I’d certainly be sad to see Gorrin go and he undoubtedly has been a big part of our runs to the playoffs. However an ACL injury is not something that’s recovered from with much ease and I can understand the club being cautious in what they offer him. If others have produced longer deals to his agent, he’d be mad to ignore them.
This says more about KR than any of the players
If we can all see what the problem was KR should have done. The most important players to get in during January were a replacement for Gorrin and a replacement for Thornilley. We only got Brown at the last minute and no replacement for Gorrin.
Now we may have tried but ultimately we failed.
Gorrin would not have played in that many games especially at home against the lesser teams.Kane was fine against those sides. But away v Morecambe ,Accrington,Plymouth,Portsmouth, Rotherham and at home v Bolton,Ipswich,Sunderland and even MK(first half they were all over us) he was exactly the sort of player we needed.

We were a defender short even before Thorniley went back.
Yes I agree with that, what we need is a balanced squad and somehow we have lacked that in the past couple of seasons. We got away with it the season before last because we had very few injuries but we were caught out last year.
We were threadbare at the back and that was from game 1 when Williams had to play right back.

And; for balance:

If you dare to suggest that we could do with signing a player or that one single aspect of our performance last season wasn’t perfect, or you pick out any small thing for some criticism:

“WHY DO YOU EVEN BOTHER WATCHING US IF WINNING EVERY SINGLE GAME IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN BE HAPPY!!! REMEMBER WE USED TO BE IN THE CONFERENCE - ISNT THIS BETTER??! GO AND SUPPORT SWINDON THEN WHY DONT YOU?”

And so the two sides go round and round and round…

Seeing a lot of ROUND PEGS IN ROUND HOLES chat again on here.

A look at the Championshop PO SF yesterday between two clubs with no right to be in them given their budget.

Luton had Jordan Clark playing CM, who has spent most of his career at RW and Kal Naismith at LCB, who played most of his football before Luton at LW or even up front.

Huddersfield had Jonathan Hogg at DC, who has played his whole career at MC, and Sorba Thomas came on and played up front having played much of the season at RWB.

Versatility is good, it’s not a weakness, and having players capable in multiple positions is essential to making the most out of your squad. People have to get over this idea that a player is defined by their historical position.

Of course, if they’re good enough.

Williams can do that to a certain degree,as can Long, however in the defensive midfield role we were playing Kane in and he wasn’t that good ,this also deprived us of having Kane further up the field where he could do more damage.

we had no one else to play there,

Kane was never intended to play as "defensive midfielder". He was the deeper player looking to take the ball from the back 4/5 and direct play.

Yeah agreed, I said at the time and through the season that Kane would never be the right player to replace Gorrin given how essential his defensive work was to us, and Kane’s lack of that particular skill set

Ridiculous comment

The level of expectation on this forum sometimes is ridiculous.

I'd say the last three seasons we have played our most attractive football at the Kassam stadium with fairly good results and batted way above our average on budget when you look at the big hitters in the division.

Maybe the people who think we should completely overhaul our squad because we've apparently underachieved should go and support Man City or Newcastle??

If you think that making the play offs two seasons in a row then improving our points total next season is 'standing still' then you're seriously seriously deluded
Ridiculous comment back! -
Who said we are standing still, I’m saying we have to keep improving, get it?

Just because we were crap in the past doesn't mean we can't strive to be better now, it's a really strange argument. Luton were still a Conference side when we were back in League 2 and they were busy drawing the first leg of their playoff semi for a chance to get in the Premier League while our season was dead a couple of weeks before the end. Yes it's tricky and there are lots of clubs that want to be promoted and are fighting for the same thing but let's have some ambition.

I really can't buy the more points than last year argument either, that's absolute nonsense. From being in the playoffs to missing them by seven points is going backwards whichever way you spin it.

I think the most frustrating thing, for me personally at least, is that we really weren't that far away and the problems were so bloody obvious to most and weren't addressed. Defensively we were incredibly light on the ground, next to no cover and we needed a replacement for Gorrin who was injured almost two months before the window even opened, yet alone closed. We didn't bother getting a holding midfielder in so had to shoehorn Kane in there and signed Ciaron Brown with about an hour of the window left, even that was only replacing Thorniley. This isn't hindsight either, plenty of people on here were begging for defensive reinforcements in January (and before the season started to be fair). The maddening thing is what a missed opportunity the season feels like, genuine progress could have been made but we finished miles off the pace in the end.
At last, someone who understands, top top post fella👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Yes but this part of the post is about players playing in utility roles
I know you look at everything in a positive fashion but even you must agree that not replacing Gorrin as early as we could was a big mistake
As you say Kane wasn’t brought in for that role but I recall the season before last we tried Henry in that role when Gorrin was suspended, that was an abject failure so KR knew he had to act but didn’t unless a deal for someone fell through but even then there should have been a back up

Great post Joey sums it up

I think just after the Plymouth game,( maybe wrong on exactly which game) or certainly an away game we lost,Nathan from Radox questioned KR about lack of defensive cover and he got quite bolshy about it making excuses and mentioning injuries.
But nevertheless I think KR is an obstinate sort of chap I think we got away with injuries the previous season and his obsession with wingers caught him out this year when we were threadbare at the back
Ultimately cost us a playoff spot
I do think the media should challenge him more often, I’m sure they read these posts and some extremely good points are made

I’m not sure challenge is quite the right word, but I would certainly love to know more about Karl’s plans and intentions, and what he felt went wrong. A lot of what goes on will inevitably stay under wraps though.

Agree but I would love to know why we were lightweight at the back and had Mous in the squad plus why didn’t we replace Gorrin
All fair questions I would think

I know this is really Scotchers job, but perhaps we did try to bring in a DM in January. I expect we were looking for a loan as we always intended to offer Gorrin a new contract (albeit one year due to his injury) as a reward for services rendered. If a player was identified and their club wanted to sell and wages were £10k a week or more we might have baulked. Karl can't really tell us any of this as he'll get hit with "lack of ambition", "just a drop in the ocean for our board".

Alternatively having spent on Herbie Kane at the start of the window, maybe there was little left to do any serious business.

Clearly mistakes have been made in the squad and certain players (luck always plays its part as well)
But some in here tend to think that all players have one position only.
Many players are capable of being very competent in a number of positions. Long can play any of the back 4/5 positions (I reckon he could be a decent DCM player). I have seen it said on here that he is a CB only.
Williams has well in a variety of positions this season.
As you rightly suggest, most clubs play players out of their natural position. It is inevitable in a long season. As well as Huddersfield and Luton, even Liverpool and Man City play people out of their natural positions even with their vast wealth

All of that is very feasible but he could of said something like we tried but failed to bring someone in or Herbie Kane was essential because Branagan might of gone to Blackpool etc
