How is it that Bristol City can line up the likes of Atkinson and Sykes before the end of the season. Shrewsbury have done it as well with a player from Coventry and yet we never have anyone done and dusted this early
KR always says he wants things done the right way at this football club and yet other teams can supposedly talk to our players before the end of the season.
Do we have to be a bit more ruthless to get the players we want?
Take Smallwood,as WEYellow says exactly the player we want but you can bet other teams have already spoken to him. By the time the good players are released it is too late and you are left with the lesser players.

I think the two teams you referenced knew which division they’d be competing in next season from about January onwards, these things take time and I’m sure having that knowledge helps to identify and make progress with targets in advance. We probably have a blueprint for each outcome and can only really crack on with setting that in motion when we know our fate.

You are right to say these things take time…….. for us ,
but for instance, we may have gone up but Sykes was obviously talking to BC,when it became clear we were not going up things moved fast.We probably know who we want but are we talking to them early enough?

Clubs can sign out of contract players a month before the transfer window opens. Sykes was effectively released after the Rotherham game and would have been given permission to speak with other clubs. I suspect that whilst other clubs would have been interested in him, Bristol City would have been his best option and therefore a deal would have been fairly easily resolved. Sykes had been playing regularly and hasn't a history of injuries, so the medical would have been fairly straight forward.

We will also be talking to players who are out of contract and some, like Sam Balldock will be fairly easy to tie up. Others, such as Nicky Cadden will likely have several offers including one from the club he has just been promoted with. He may well be taking time out to celebrate this season and to assess all the offers on the table. Doesn't mean that we can't get these players, and doesn't mean that we're already stuck with the bargain basement rejects!

Plus Professional footballers are entitled to a holiday this time of year.

Perfectly correct, the Beast showed he was a bit limited at L2 level and went on to play for Wrexham in the Conference but no higher, pace was an issue.

Matt Green played for a variety of clubs in the Conference and League 2 so looks like Wilder knew what he was doing. He does have quite a sound managerial record!
My issue was that we released creighton, Bulman and green and then replaced them with 3 weaker players. Our team ended up weaker so can't give wilder credit for that season
