Really fancy Sheff Weds and Ipswich to get promoted. Already, both have done excellent transfer business and both have had a season (Ippy a couple!) to have a look at what is required to get out the division.
Their business looks worryingly sensible doesn’t it. Ipswich’s last summer seemed wild.

It’s great that we seem to have a budget that at the least competes with, and maybe exceeds, clubs like Pompey, Charlton, Barnsley, Peterborough, Wycombe, but the gap to Sheffield Wednesday’s and Ipswich’s is still enormous. Derby’s too, although that’s a basket case club at the minute at least.

They have done great business? That can’t be right surely, the window has only just opened, and a long way to go yet. We’ve been told KR has a couple of Aces up his sleeve. Two signings are as good as done, and can’t have them for a while, and another that’s close to done.

Oh the excitement is building.

Anyway fixtures out in an hour, that’s something to look forward to.

A tiresome Window thread for the umpteenth time. Does anyone know whether these so called "Gems" that 1 or 2 clubs have obtained were spoken to by us or that we've sat back doing nothing. Let's look at Michael Smith as an example, reported to be on or offered 15k per week, does nobody see right there that the game has gone bonkers when sums like this are being spoken about in League 1?..Yet some fans presumably because we have owners with a few quid think we can compete, it's sheer madness.

How dare a player any player dare to turn down or not even consider a move to Oxford a 3rd tier based club with gates of 6-7.000 when the likes of Wednesday are courting them.

They have done this before though. Wasn't Aaron Mclain one of 2 successes that came from non league years ago to Peterborough?
Sutton United aren't non-league. In fact they only missed out on the League 2 play-offs by a single point, so weren't that far away from being in the same division as us next season.

Can't disagree with you there. I would add Peterborough into the mix as they're very efficient at building teams at this level.

What's worrying is that both Ipswich and Sheff Wed seem to have grasped what it takes to get out of this league.

Let's not let it distract what we're doing though. Plenty of time to get the transfer window and pre season right.

The game went mad years ago. It’s just upped a level again this year with certain sides.

Promoted clubs coming up to League One are aghast as to what the top 10 sides at this level (ourselves included) are paying players and we didn’t even make the playoffs! It’s the same throughout all levels.

I agree with what you're saying, but fans will naturally latch on to soundbites about ambition, aggression in the market, etc. and optimism and inflated expectations will follow. Those soundbites have been regularly fed to the support for the last 2-3 years, and while agree a big dollop of reality needs to be swallowed with them, the expectations are largely based on words from club employees and owners.

Despite the recent disquiet among a few yellow forum members, I still believe that there is a consensus from the overall fanbase that trust the process and get what the club is trying hard to do.

I have no doubt our transfer business will include enough quality additions to make us competitive with the ‘Big boys’ in this league and the wait will be worthwhile.

Without boring you with names there are many many players IMHO still out there that would help us push on that are within our grasp.

Do you know this? Based on the stuff coming out of the club I believe our budget will be closer to Wednesday and Ipswich and I'm hopeful that we're fishing quietly in areas that will bring us surprisingly good signings and put us up there with them.*

* This isn't sarcasm either.

Well let's see. They haven't in the past couple of seasons.
Both teams were favourites last season and look what happened.
They do seem to be buying well but I wouldn't be at all surprised if one underachieves.

I do have a niggling doubt about Wednesday that centres around (the very likable) Darren Moore.
Last season, it was felt by many that had arguably the best squad in the division playing with the handbrake on (early on especially).
They drew an awful lots of games through October/November which at that point kept them loitering outside of the play-off places.
It looks like he remedied that later on and they started putting teams away - scoring 3,4,5,6 (whilst also keeping it relatively tight at the back).

However, with an abundance of new signings, I do wonder if he may be inclined to tinker or tweak a winning formula to accomodate new players and if they start the season modestly he could come under fire. You then have the potential for a Sunderland situation, whereby despite never being out of contention for promotion they're still perceived to be underachieving and the managerial merry-go-round continues.

Just checked - Wednesday's first 2 months are absolutely brutal. If they are up there at that point they could be as good as promoted, seriously.
Their first 11 games (August and September) include home games against Pompey, Barnsley, Ipswich, Wycombe and trips to MK, Peterborough, Bolton, Plymouth.

If anyone needed a reminder of just how tough this league is to get out of, that right there should do it. That list plus Shef Wed themselves make up half the league and would you be surprised to see any of them in the top 6-8?
