Home Match Day Thread 19/09/20 L1 - OUFC v Sunderland

No evidence so far that any of the new signings are L1 standard.
Clare was dreadful today. Cooper seems to struggle to get into a game. Osei showed nothing worthwhile at all. Atkinson only looks any good when bringing the ball forward, he's poor at his day job.
Early days? Obviously. But there was more hope evident in our bad starts over the last two seasons. We look easy meat.

Didn't listen as I'm at work, reading this thread makes me feel like I didn't miss much

Awful. Absolutely awful.

I know it's still very early in the season, but I've seen absolutely nothing from this group of players to suggest we'll be anywhere near even the playoffs this season.

Clare is simply awful, he has no positional awareness, can't read the game, and can't pass, we needed a specialist RB, and we brought in an amateur, very disappointed.

Atkinson is like so many modern day CB, pretty good with the ball, but not very good at defending, and very lightweight.

Kelly looks like a child playing mens football.

I've been a big fan of Henry, but the guy's lost his mojo, and needs to find it quick!

Very disappointed with the new signings so far, none of them look like they've got what it takes to get us to the next level.

Very concerned

no games Winnall...will change this???

How about waiting until he has actually played for us a bit?!

Matty Taylor/Osei had no service of note apart from one cross.

All the defence and midfield have to hold their hands up for being poor. The lack of movement and aimless/speculative passing was the most consistent features of the game.

Cam Bran looked lost, Henry looks bereft of confidence and Sykes looked more interested in doing niggly fouls.

Bin the diamond, we don't have the players for it.

If Sean Clare isn't fully fit then don't play him and play Elechi (or a new left back), moving SL back to right back, as that defence was woefully unbalanced and looked like they'd never met before.

I hope they work on defending and attacking set pieces this coming week as apart from the odd occasion they were awful.

Forde has to play the defensive role over Kelly as he brings so much more energy and intent.

We are to short as a team. Hinders us at both ends. Long right back. Atkinson left. Another center back. Forde has to start. We are a long way off it.

Clare was dreadful today.

The whole team was dreadful from start to finish.

We look so unbalanced and unfit - it's major worry.

It looked like a team of strangers who had only just met each other at 3 o'clock.

The change to a diamond formation was brave and it backfired spectacularly. You have to have energetic full backs who get up and down the pitch - providing real quality
offensively and are solid defensively. Big mistake as no-one seemed to know their roles today.

Poor defensive errors with aimless passing. Pace lacking against an ordinary Sunderland side. The players don't look fit. Too many excuses of not being able to find the places that need filling in the squad in a window many weeks old. It has not been a brilliant window looking at the players that have come in, having not done a lot, however KR tries to kid himself.

We would be fine with a bit of pace but I don’t feel like we’re going to get anybody in with it that’s the only difference between this season and last imo plus we always start slow under KR SO keep calm and carry on supporting the mighty Us until the end lol

I know it’s stating the obvious but we are missing Rob Dickie’s calmness in defence. Too many times today clearances were rushed and sliced in any direction. Dickie, although capable of the odd mistake, took charge of situations and just gave reassurance. However iffy he might have been pre season I’d bring Mous back, we need leadership on the pitch and I dont really see any leader out there. First time I’ve seen Clare but that was borderline abysmal. A couple of balls down the channel that just aimlessly drifted out of play were Sunday league stuff, perhaps try Forde there next week while Clare finds his feet.

Early days but Im beginning to wonder if GUK has a point about our recruitment this summer. So far quite a few gambles that haven't, as yet, come off.
Im glad people are seeing this. Take Lincoln for example you could see they recruited very well if you know anything about lower league football. Likewise Blackpool.

We had a good team last season and needed 2-3 solid signings to take us to the next level. A fit striker to rotate with Taylor. An experienced right back, but most importantly, pace. We brought none of those and hence are rock bottom after two pastings where weve played abysmally.

Having a manager with some tactical nous would help but you cant have everything.

Travelling back from up north so missed the game but from reading this thread, KR tried to implement an untested formation / system using players unfamiliar with that system and who weren’t on their games either? Compound that with new players trying to find their feet as well?
Hell of a risk trying that in a league game rather than a meaningless cup game or friendly, and it’s backfired.
He needs to learn from that and put it right, starting Monday, or better still, tomorrow.

Completely agree. We look so lightweight and weak in all the key positions, and if we don't sort our act out, we'll be this season's cannon fodder
