Matches 18/02/26 (6PM) - FA Youth Cup - Oxford United v Manchester United

They do but it would be good if the club could pick a style of football that is enjoyable to watch.
Goes back too keep changing the manager every 5 minutes the players both youth and first team just dont know what they are supposed to be doing

I also dont think it helps that we dont have a reserve team so our youth get used to playing against men
Looking at man united they look big and strong

They don't have reserve sides any more. The Football Combination ceased to exist years ago.

We always hear that we have these good youth players Jack Lee Leo snowdon louis Griffiths ill also include James golding Josh Johnson but none of them a getting anywhere near our first team
James golding last played for us in 2022
Josh Johnson again 2022
Tyler goodrham the last one to come through
Something isn't right with our youth structure

We are a cat 3 academy. Our first team have progressed quicker than the academy did. This is why I think we have more chance of bringing through our own young talent if we go down to League 1 than we do in the Championship.

If we were a league 1 side then I would imagine GOD would have got a fair few games and apperances under his belt by now which would help him in the long run.

We've played really well since our goal. They have got some excellent players but let's be honest most of the man utd players have more chance playing for us than there 1st team. And ours will be playing at Oxford city.

But clearly no one wanted him on loan not even a non league team

What a goal by the man utd lad sign him up pure class, our lads couldn't get anywhere near him.

If we became a cat 2 academy would we automatically become part of these under 23/under 21 leagues?

Well I'm buggered if I can find them. It's all under 23s and under 21 teams.
Definitely something it always comes up on bet365 fixtures Tuesday afternoons seems to be mostly northern teams bolton Fleetwood Huddersfield Rotherham Mansfield Bolton Exeter i think I saw Crewe
We played Bolton just the other week

The Man Utd players were technically far superior at times. Their lad on the left cut through our team at will at times. I thought their number nine looked good as well, he should have scored a couple in the first half.

As for OUFC, definitely improved in the second half and deserved the goal. We just didn’t get a lucky bounce on a couple of occasions in the first and second half to make it a bit more of a contest.

I have to admit, I was surprised just how poor our defence was at corners. They could have scored one of several. I also couldn’t work out why we were playing it around at the back given the awful conditions. Our No.9 pressed and ran the line pretty well. Never really got much of a chance to get the ball at his feet. Was also surprised at our unwillingness to have a go. Utd scored their second thanks to a shot just outside the box, conditions certainly helped see it bounce/bobble on its way in.

As someone else has said. There’s certainly a style/tactical approach that appears to be trickling down into the youth setup.

Enjoyed that, and impressed with the attendance (over 3500!).

No issue with their players being much better than ours, but as others have said, it seems worrying that we’re coaching the same slightly aimless lump-it style of football across the ages! Did create some good opportunities in the second half, but final ball usually way off…which is familiar!

Obi has played for their first team a few times I think? And the 15 year old(!) Gabriel looks very special.

Oddly I spent a lot of the game thinking about Siriki Dembele! Can see why he would have impressed at that level with all the technical ability and chances to carry the ball forward.

We are in U21 leagues although only one is organised. We are in the Central League and a more informal league where match dates are more loosely set. This gives flexibility and sufficient fixtures. The Central League:

I think we could end up in the U21 Professional Development Lg if we get Cat 2 status.

Don't we need one of those indoor domes to reach Cat 2? Pretty sure that was the main thing that was stopping us.
Yes that is what is currently stopping it but I think there are plans to put one in place which is another big cost for Erik to shell out.

TBF they probably played one of the top 20 u18 club sides in the world tonight with a striker who would be Oxford highest paid player on 30k a week and cost them £5million. Oxford had 6 probably starters out injured so overall think they did ok

Impressive turnout from the first team players and coaching squad and fair play, Michael Carrick was there as well.

We were sat just behind the directors box, which seemed to be an overspill area - James Constable was sat in front of me with six or seven others in club kit. Unfortunately, they were all wearing hats, hoodies and big coats as protection against the elements - except Beano who was in shorts and a tracksuit jacket and no hat!

Sat next to me was the granddad of Junior Brown who it transpires, is a Sheffield Wednesday fan but goes to all his grandsons matches.

Was Brown their player on the left? If so, he looked the best player on the pitch.

Additionally, our team looked smaller than theirs e.g. at set pieces and were outmuscled on 50/50.

I listened to a podcast with Steve Kinniburgh (I linked to it on his page) and he said the club was ready to go to Cat 2, but needs to spend over £1m on a 4g pitch (I think), which currently it's not willing to.

It will be the dome he was talking about and yes, they aren’t cheap 😅

Lee only signed his first pro deal in July and is still young enough to be allowed to play for the U18s.

Snowden (still not 18) and Griffiths (18) have long term injuries which have impacted their progression this season. Snowden of course featured a good amount in pre-season.

Golding and Johnson are much older and both turn 22 within two months of next season starting.

Golding last played a handful of times in L1 and the club seems to have deemed his development being better found playing regularly in loan spells - Maidenhead x 2, Southend, Crewe and now back to Southend.
Unfortunately his loan at Crewe was ended due to injury and they didn't want to wait for him to return to fitness as otherwise he'd have had a full season in L2.

Johnson can just never ever stay fit. There must be a reason why we have continually renewed his contract including another year after last season but he just can't get enough senior football
Managed 22 games for Maidenhead last season but there was a big gap between end of August and February due to injury. Went on the Indonesia tour and has then been injured this season.

Can see Golding going elsewhere on a permanent in the summer in order to play football unless we see a regular place for him at L1 if/when the worst happens and Johnson being released.
