But we aren’t conceding many at all and don’t look like conceding many either. Our last four games (three away) we’ve conceded two goals - an own goal and one where we momentarily switched off at a set piece. It works both ways.I fear for this game, Pompey are finding goals easy to come by!

Pompey have won one away game all season on Oct 19th away at QPR.
1 win in 17.

We will need to perform much better than the last two gsmes. Been pretty woeful going forward / creating chances but solid enough at the back. Can be forgiven at Burnley a little as they are very good, but we didn’t lay a glove on a terrible Derby team.
Having said that we are better at home, crowd will be up for it so let hope it clicks - a win here makes the point at derby acceptable!!

True. But they played very well against Sheffield United.
Hoping Murphy has an off game!

Long must begin, crunch tackle Murphy in the first 5 minutes, and then he can be subbed. Murphy is the only good provider Pompey have.

I watched their game against Sheff Utd and Pompey were excellent, other than finishing where they missed at least 2 open goals. Defensively they didn't look great though, Sheff Utd looked like they were having an off day, but still looked dangerous on the rare occasions they got near the Pompey goal.
Everything came through Murphy who looked at least a level above everyone else on the pitch. As an aside I wonder whether some Prem clubs are looking at him.
The longer Rowett has been here the more disciplined/pragmatic we've got, which obviously means fewer goals, Pompey press high so we need a plan to get out that isn't just lumping it.
Seen it described as a must win, which it really isn't - for either team. Score draw feels likely to me - (cue toys out of the pram for a few on here).

I was a bit surprised no prem team took a gamble on Murphy in the summer, 20k a week for a player of his quality is a bargain. How much of a gap is there between him and his identical twin brother? Not much and he plays in the prem.

Maybe this could get the goals flowing?!?
Matos playing deeper, winning possession and helping to control the midfield.
Tyler in the middle, along with Cam further forward, helping us to actually retain the ball in central areas, and adding some genuine creativity and drive going forward.
Hopefully this will allow our wingers to stay wide, and get on the front foot more and attack the full backs, and get some crosses in, with Romeny getting on the end of crosses and through balls.
Get a couple of goals up, then bring Mills on to get more minutes under his belt and to help add a third.
Then bring Vaulks on to shut up shop.
Simples.

They have scored FOUR goals in their last 5 games.I fear for this game, Pompey are finding goals easy to come by!
If that is finding goals easily to come by, hopefully that drops off!!

The thought of 1 number six sends shivers down my back, we got opened up time and again with only one number 6 in the last 4-6 weeks under Des.View attachment 25371

Well Derby were amazing side till we actually saw them so by Friday I am expecting the hype around Pompey to make it seem like we are playing Real Madrid.

Doesn’t necessarily mean that Rowett would make the same tactical mistakes though does it?The thought of 1 number six sends shivers down my back, we got opened up time and again with only one number 6 in the last 4-6 weeks under Des.
Maybe Des was the problem.
Just an idea anyway, it’s blatantly not gonna happen

Complete turnaround on expectations from me on this one. 2-0 win. Romeny brace.
2-0 win Harris brace.
We might win we might lose we might even draw who knows

Think I'd go:
Cumming
Kioso Helik Brown Leigh
Maton Brannagan
Placheta Rodrigues Dembele
Harris
The key from a defensive perspective is nullifying Murphy, and I think Matos would be better at backing up Kioso than Vaulks, as he covers short distances so quickly.
That front four should be enough to cause problems against the league's second worst defence, but if it's not working i'd like to see Goodrham and Mills on with enough time to properly get into the game.
We also need to make the most of set pieces. They were poor on the whole against Derby.

Here's a positive thought for you. Ahead of the season we were regarded as relegation fodder by many pundits. Apart from a few days before Christmas I don't think we have been in the bottom three. Of course, the only thing that matters is not being in the bottom of three come season end but the fact that we have been above that for 95% of the season so far is a huge testament to the players and backroom staff.Let’s just get behind the boys for 90+ mins and enjoy the game

It's become a recurring issue. Set pieces are very weak and lack imagination. Accuracy is also missing. I thought Tyler had some good corners but, recently, he has not been on the pitch enough to be effective. That front four should be enough to cause problems against the league's second worst defence, but if it's not working i'd like to see Goodrham and Mills on with enough time to properly get into the game.

A good set piece coach has to be on the shopping list for the summer. (or sooner if one becomes available?)

I thought Helik's arrival contributed to us looking much more dangerous from set pieces against Blackburn and Luton, but we have gone backwards again since then. It's become a recurring issue.
