14/03/2026 - MDT: Oxford United v Charlton Athletic

We made unnecessarily negative substitutions on Wednesday and got away with it, we made the same subs today and didn’t. I can’t believe we didn’t learn any lessons from midweek, unbelievably frustrating and naive.

Over reaction or what - there have been plenty of other brainless decisions this season
I can't recall any that have so obviously dropped us what was pretty much a guaranteed two additional points. For something that was completely unnecessary.

Also not sure I'm all that keen of the idea of if a player does something brainless you shouldn't worry about it, as someone is bound to do it again soon.

So disappointing - that decision from
Brown to concede a penalty is a body blow to staying up.
However the decision to sit deep works against a small side like Blackburn but was always always going to be dangerous against a big side like Charlton.
Would have taken 10 points from 12, but really should have been 12 from 12.

Think Charlton always had a foot in this game though we seemed in control of the 2nd half. Shirt pulls go on all the time - this one cost us. Lanks gets clattered a lot but we got something in the end today.

Will take a point from it to make it 10 points from the last 4 games, especially when that looked so unlikely after the Stoke game. But the way we finished the game wasn't good enough.

We sat back way too deep, camped in our own defensive third, and played into Charlton's hands where they could use their height and physicality to pump long balls into the box uncontested from 30 yards out. Yes, you may have to sit back a bit to see out a game, but when you sacrifice any outlet to alleviate pressure, you completely hand the initiative back to the opposition. We got away with it vs Blackburn with that late scramble coming to nothing, but didn't today.

Brown was poor with that ridiculous shirt pull, but when you invite constant pressure like that, you massively increase the chances of one of our players making a big mistake.

Yeah those substitutions forced Brown tio needlessly pull the players shirt for a pen.
Good lord

I hate to say it - suspect that if Cumming was better in the air under pressure (that Blackburn moment being an example), Brown is less likely to make that pull. He must have thought Jones had a fair chance of winning it.

Stupid, still.

Now we become Millwall and Hull supporters…

We managed the game poorly in the last ten minutes. A few times we got the ball near the corner and just hit aimless balls into the box when we could have easily put our foot on the ball, slowed things down and recycled possession. Placheta and Spencer both guilty of it after coming on.

Charlton didn't look like scoring whatsoever until Brown decided he fancied giving Cumming something to do.

But that's the point, it's not a decision to stay deep. It's working with what we've got at the time that isn't completely spent physically and mentally

So now Cumming is to blame for someone else's foul even though he may have thought he had the ball covered. Perhaps we should have scored two then - would we have scored without the pen - more questions than correct answers. It was an awfully long time to hang on to a lead at this level.

Before the game I think I would have quite happily hugged a point.

We have a week off now and who knows what will happen Vs saints, the only predictable thing about results at this stage in the championship is that they are unpredictable

Stupid decision by Brown. Saw the cross coming in, thought "Cumming's got that. Phew." Needless.
