5th Test 12-16 September 2019 The Oval

Woakes gone LBW ...for 2 ... typical domino like batting display.... 205-7 from under 60overs!!!

Is there anything more frustrating than watching England bat?! Just not good enough. The Aussie bowling attack is good but we’re just giving them wickets. We won’t make 250 today on a wicket that should’ve reaped 300 at least.

Yes, because it's the same batsmen with the same lack of technique against the same superior bowlers. Very groundhog day!
Woakes & Curran replaced Roy and Overton ... but in the greater scheme, yes same batsmen, same lack of test match batting application.... against reasonably decent bowlers

Woakes and Curran are numbers 7 and 8 - by the time they get in (as all rounders) you'd hope the specialist batsmen might have made it a bit easier for them!

indeed .... now Archer gone, the collapse continues ... Leach in now 226-8 .... will England scrape a 250 total? will England still be batting at close of play today?

2x consecutive maximums from Buttler ... who like the rest of the England batsmen is in white ball/ limited overs batting mentality... in a test match

I mean, yes, this pathetic score - to add to all our other pathetic scores over the past eighteen months - is more the fault of our top order, none of whom have gone on to make a significant score.

But at the same time, Sam Curran is never a Test match #7. Yes, he's had some great rearguard knocks, but he has a first class average of 30 and the same number of first class centuries as I do. He's a bowler first and foremost, and should be batting as such.

Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow - by my reckoning - has a Test match average of roughly 20 since the Lords test last year, and his overall Test average has slipped down to 35. He's far too susceptible to getting bowled and lbw. He needs a break as well.

I know Ben Foakes has not had the best summer with Surrey, but he did absolutely nothing wrong when he played for England and he's a fine keeper.

This winter, I think we need to be going with:
Burns
XXX
Root
XXX
Stokes
Buttler
Foakes
+ 4 bowlers

With the selectors giving whichever uncapped (or barely capped if it's Olly Stone) batsmen they think have the best chance of success at international level the shot at the XXX spots.

When you're eight down, I think it's OK...…..Buttler at least tried to play sensibly when he first came in.

Buttler is Englands highest scorer in the first innings

8 overs 'short '/ light on day one! ... surprisingly England survive (with just the one wicket remaining) the first day 271-8 , with the usual top order dismissed cheaply , middle order collapse and the tail digging in doggedly

Two wickets remaining..?

Won’t we? The good thing about cricket is it ain’t over til it’s over. Hopefully Buttler can carry on tomorrow morning and we can make 300+ in the first innings, which isn’t the end of the world

You should know after Headingley how crap my predictions are when I’m in sulk mode.. ?

This winds me right up. Every team, including England, do it and it’s unfair on people who have often taken days off work and spent a good wedge of cash to go along for a day at the cricket. Unless the ICC do something about it and allow umpires to start penalising teams on the pitch, nothing will change. Losing part of the match fee doesn’t harm the team. A deficit of 10 runs for every over lost would speed them up a bit!

What a frustrating day. A bewildering decision from Paine gave England a tonne of help and yet they blew the opportunity. Rushed decisions, poor shots after getting in at times and even with a whole dollop of luck have still limped to 271-8. That’s not good on a pitch that would almost certainly seen the Aussies reach 400 all out (Smith and Labuschagne would score most of those).

Whilst it shouldn’t really matter too much bearing in mind the real horrors are higher up the order, the tail needs a rejig. Leach should be nine, Broad at ten and Archer’s enthusiastically crap batting should see him at 11. I think many in the overexcitement of adding Archer to the Test side have overegged his batting ability. He’s typically West Indian in his approach to batting and is too gung-ho to be relied upon when we need someone who is better at digging in. Leach has shown that despite his career average being below seven. He’s got a Test mindset which is one of the characteristics I’d look for when building a Test squad. He’s one who survives my cull of the England Test side after all this is done and dusted.

Buttler gone for 70 ...just Broad left then.... will England fall short of or go past 300 ?

have to say Buttler made a huge error trying n failing to make the shot that ended up costing his wicket
typical short over batsman swing ... its a test match, AND Leach is the other batsman! Why did Buttler attempt it???

Friday 13th ...heres hoping its unlucky for the Aussies
