Championship 08-05-2025: Play-off 1st leg - Bristol City v Sheffield United

If I was Manning I’d be more upset at Dickie’s decision to bring him down. He surely knows a penalty is getting given from where he was vs Moore - he’s asking for trouble. I’ll always remember Sir Alex coming out after a game where he berated a decision but essentially blamed his player (Vidic?) for not just allowing them to score and have 11 men still on the field to try and win.

I suspect when Manning reflects, that’s how he’ll view it. It’s idiotic from Dickie. The smart play is try and put him off but ultimately let him shoot - 1 nil down and go again with plenty of time to play at home. Daft.

Personally, I felt it was a certain penalty but I find the double jeopardy rule hard to follow. He has tried to get the ball, albeit a few metres after the foul starts, but he has got something on it and for me I would’ve said that’s a penalty and a yellow but it’s far from the worst decision I’ve seen.

Historically, a player who committed a foul within their own penalty area that denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity would be sent off (red card) and the opposing team would be awarded a penalty kick. This was considered "double jeopardy" due to the multiple penalties.

In 2016, the Laws of the Game for a penalty were amended to address this perceived harshness. Now, if a player commits a foul within their own penalty area that denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the player will only be cautioned (yellow card) if the foul was a genuine attempt to play the ball.

The bit is red is key here. Rob Dickie made absolutely no attempt to play the ball - he just rugby tackled the player to the ground, so the ref was absolutely spot on.

The point is that he fouled Moore before he tried to get the ball.
Definite penalty and red card in my view. And stupid by Dickie ( and really bad defending to let Moore get ahead of him)

I’m not sure how Moore made the most of it, Dickie had both his arms on him and pulled him down. You can even see the pull more clearly as Dickie tries to get round him to get the ball.
As far as soft penalty’s go, that isn’t even close.
Watch Moore's legs. Yes Dickie pulled him sufficiently to put him off and commit a foul but it's definitely isn't enough to make Moore's legs completely buckle at they did. Hence 'made the most of it'.

Dickie sadly confirmed last night that he will never play in the Premier. He’s a good ball player and strong in the air but too statuesque.

He’s 29 and moved from QPR to Bristol City in his last transfer, I think, short of getting there with an unlikely promotion, it was pretty decided he was never getting a transfer to the premier league.

You see where Nelson is at 20 and you realise that none of our, very decent FL, centre backs who we have had come through over the last decade have never made the step up to the top flight, a yo yo prem club has a player like that coming through.

Good, f**k off Manning! I think the grudge may end for me now but I couldn’t have stomached him getting promoted this season.
The grudge ends now for you?! Are you even a proper fan? I’ve got another 20 years of bitching about how he left yet!

Looking forward to hearing who is at fault for this drubbing. Is it the ref? Is it those mean nasty Oxford fans not showing him enough respect? Was it the players switching off during the PowerPoint?

Still a bit shocked we beat this Sheff Utd team when they were top of the league and eyeing up automatic promotion!

It'll be because of Dickie's sending off. He would have stopped all their goals and scored a double hat-trick.

Already seeing the usual nonsense on the coverage surrounding it about playoffs being useless
The play offs are a great thing and I love watching all the games. No doubt the EFL will soon try and change them in some way as they hate when something works.
