I never thought we’d do much this season (although I thought we’d be doing better in the league although we do seem to be slowly turning the corner there) and never had us down for a playoff place or above, so therefore I’d hoped that the fun from this season would come from the cups.
The League Cup has delivered in that regard. A couple of rounds navigated and a payout with Man City coming to town to run rings around us in front of a full house. I’m hopeful we can do something similar in the FA Cup too – again, navigate the first two rounds and make sure we’re in the hat for round three.
Whilst never a priority, the EFL Trophy – for all its faults with the Under [Insert inconsistent age here] teams in it – adds value to uninteresting, middling seasons when you have a run in it. Anyone remember much about the league campaign in 2016-17? Finished 8th, never looked like doing much, the Bolton away game was a good result …. Anyone remember the FA Cup win over Newcastle and the away day at Middlesbrough plus the Luton semi-final and Wembley day out against Coventry? Of course I do! Even as a minor cup competition, it generated some memories.
I hope we go through to keep some interest in this season. I won’t be in attendance though!
