+++ 06/07/20 L1 Play Off Semi Final: Leg 2 - OUFC v Pompey +++

Only realised today that 4 of our 5 penalty takers (scorers ?) were substitutes. Well played to KR for getting that set up amid all the pressure.

I guess that was another reason for Taylor on the bench - knowing he'd need to be there at the end to take a pen. It makes me wonder if KR looked at the penalties possibility and worked backwards for some part of team selection. The big gamble being starting Henry then subbing him.

Probably way overthinking this and what does it matter anyway! More importantly, when does the Wembley Build Up thread start?

I think his natural position is actually as a conventional centre mid, not a holding mid and certainly not a right back. He’s hardly played in that role at all but when he has he’s looked okay... ish. Blackpool away last August - when we somehow lost the most one sided game I’ve seen in years - he was one of the regular centre mids in front of Gorrin and he was fine. Trouble being, that’s probably the position we struggle in the least, especially a few months ago when we had Baptiste and more wide players which meant Henry also dropped in occasionally.

I think he made is debut against Pompey and conceded a penalty, it was saved but we lost that match 4-1 and he had a terrible time. But I also remember him playing against Doncaster at the end of that season on the right side of the midfield three, and he completely bossed the game with his passing and movement. I think there is talent in there, but he's a confidence player, and not someone you can really depend on to be consistent.

Another point. Sykes is a far more technical player than perhaps he gets credit for. You can see how much he has developed and the little niggles on Curtis did not go unnoticed.

Don't remember when it was some time in the 2nd half, but the time where he mugged off about 3 of their players and spun out and won a free kick. Absolute Football porn! Sykes has come on leaps and bounds this season, and you cannot question his desire by wanting to stay and fight for a place and not go out on loan.

Bar James Henry, I reckon he has the best close control in the squad.

I would like Woodburn to get more time on the pitch I know he wasnt great at fratton park but I am sure he has got a lot more to contribute.

Agree, pompey did not give us no time on the ball especially at theirs. Wycombe last night were giving Fleetwood all kinds of space between the defence and midfield. On another night Fleetwood could of easily won that 4-0, a few silly mistakes though in both legs cost them. So if Wycombe set up the same it could be a game for Woodburn to have an affect.

Tbh , l have looked at lots of National news , and going by other mates who support different teams , everyone seems to think , we was the better team. And we need to be proud of what our team and KR as done , to get us here!
But , one more game to go , l see that WWFC fans and team see us as local rivals , when we are not , it’s Slough .?... But do not be silly , and think the game will be a walk in the park , as it will not , and they will try and stop us playing football, they are a very heavy team , so game on and all to play for chaps..

Just read Paul's excellent FV post. Didn't realise that Ben Woodburn's penalty was his first touch of the ball. Massive respect to the lad - must have ice in his veins.

I think many seem to forget he's Liverpool's youngest ever goalscorer and he scored for Wales on his international debut. You don't manage that if you don't have something about you.

Let’s not forget Wycombe have managed to do something we can’t do in dispatching Fleetwood! That should be a pretty big wake up call.

Then he needs to actually show it on the pitch at some point, because he was often underwhelming even before his injury. Francis Jeffers was once signed by Arsene Wenger for the best part of £10million and tipped as the next great England No. 9 after he scored on his debut, but he subsequently spent more than a decade failing to hit a barn door as he fell lower and lower down the leagues.

If people forget things about Ben Woodburn’s teenage exploits then it’s because he stopped showing those talents. Next season is enormous for his career. Wherever he ends up he needs to have a blinder and really start to impose himself on games.

Hopefully, that begins six days from now!

Yes , spot on and l do not want to lose , this when so close. But I’m sure KR will have it all covered , it is with out doubt his gaming planning that is his strength , and making the team work for him . Even if Mackie starts... lol.

True but Fleetwood were woeful in the first leg, I think even we would beat Fleetwood with the goalkeeper making errors and then the team going down to 9 men. Last night's game Fleetwood looked dangerous, gifted Wycombe the equaliser then got caught out trying to attack too much for Wycombe to score the second. 2-2 wasn't a fair result in my eyes. It will be hard against Wycombe but I would rather play them than the likes of Ipswich, Sunderland, pompey, Peterborough, Fleetwood, Doncaster and even Gillingham and Burton for a chance to go up.

I think that's a bit harsh, all of the team were underwhelming at the start of the season. Just as the team were starting to play themselves into form, and Woodburn was settling into the side, he got injured.

My response was more a comment to those who doubted his credentials (like a few on twitter who said 'Woodburn's going to miss') like he's a has-been who always lets the side down.

Thought Woodburn was really hitting his stride before injury and looked the player we had signed, starting with a good goal against Brizzle. From there he dropped back from more of an attacking mid role to a wider CM slot in a middle 3 and he was very good for a few games and was crucial in our turn in form around that time, think he'd have been a key player if his injury wouldn't have happened.

Just heard on South today TV that club is asking for season ticket holders to be allowed to go to Wembley? No chance too soon I think
