Away Match Day Thread 04/02/25: Championship - Burnley FC v OUFC

I'm not sure what striker would get any joy playing with our three behind him at the moment. The wingers are impossible to read and you've got to hope that one of them might cross the ball at some point. And meanwhile you've got to slog yourself into the ground leading the press. We've not sent a player through 1 on 1 very often this season, I'm thinking the type of chance like the Bristol City lad had on Saturday that CamBran took away from him. I know Bradshaw had the one v Stoke which actually came from a very good pass from Siriki (I think).
Playing this way with the one workhard striker needs the ball into the box for goals to be scored. But we don't deliver with enough quality anywhere near enough.

To put it in perspective Burnley have only lost 5 of their last 100 championship games and 15 out of their last 173.

They’d also only won 3 of their last 10 home games before tonight.

0-0 with Preston
0-0 with QPR
1-1 with Boro
0-0 with Derby (worse than us)
0-0 with Stoke (worse than us)
0-0 with Sunderland
0-0 with Leeds

Matos has to start from now on in one of the two holding midfield roles (realistically instead of Vaulks). He was absolutely immense. One of the more exiting full debuts we’ve had in a while - energy, desire, tackling, strength on the ball, bursting runs forward. Won the ball loads as well. Superb.

Cumming is player of the season so far. He’s just made so many good saves.

Bradshaw is just a slightly better version of Harris, and Harris himself has somehow got even worse. Romeny has to start up front - why not see what he can do? He can’t be any worse…
I agree with this. Matos was very good, and gets stuck in and isn’t pushed off the ball.

Cumming was sensational and motm.

Personally neither Harris or Bradshaw are good enough, I’d happily be wrong about Bradshaw and he clearly isn’t suited to playing solo up top. Will we switch to two up top, I doubt it.

Good singing from us tonight. Great stadium.

Well it took 10 games but we were eventually going to lose at some point under Rowett.

Burnley’s defence are well drilled and solid and you can see why they don’t concede goals. Cummings was excellent tonight.

Yes we lost but I’m not going to get too down about it as Burnley are one of the top teams in this league and their squad is miles ahead of ours.

Bring on Derby.

Burnley were excellent. So good defensively and balanced in midfield. If Marcus Edwards gives them the goal threat their forwards don’t give them currently, then they’ll easily make the top two.

So no disgrace tonight. I liked the changes and thought it was the sensible thing to do to freshen it up. Matos was outstanding and has to start at Derby.

Got back at 1. I thought we put up a decent show, just needed more belief and conviction in the final third. Matos was outstanding and deserves a start at Derby. Brown very good again and Helik too, a bit unlucky with the goal but they were getting in down our right far too often and it was only a matter of time before they made a ball in count. Long did well, especially second half, but he was often left two on one in the first half and needed a bit more help. A word for Brannagan too, he really does make so few mistakes on the ball and was very good again tonight.

Burnley are decent though, good technical players who work hard too. Always thought that Hannibal was a bit of a show pony but was the stand out player tonight and a fantastic work ethic.

All in all though, no complaints with the effort and work rate and although we made the odd inroads there just wasn’t that quality in attack to turn promising approach play in to something more productive.

Respect for making the journey and glad you got home safely.

Did you leave at half time?!

Just in myself. Was a good effort by most of the team. I thought Dembele was poor. Burnley should have punished us more but really good saves and blocks.

Matos is a player and a half. Sam long being Sam long all game. 62nd ground. Plenty of positives.

Matos and Cumming. Genuinely good bargain bucket signings.

Quick question - you keep going on (and on, and on) about bargain bucket signings.

And you're not wrong - compared to a large number of teams in the division, we are shopping in the reduced section.

But do you genuinely believe that we have a choice in this? And if so, do you need someone to run over the Championship Profit & Sustainability rules for you again?

We have the lowest revenues of any club in the division. From what ITKs are telling us, we do not have the lowest wage bill in the division (maybe not even close) and we've spent a few mill cumulatively on transfers. I'd be very surprised if we're not making a £10m+ loss this season and that is pushing up to the max allowed.

Yeah, we're shopping in the Championship bargain bucket - but them's the rules, and it won't be any different until we have a new stadium and/or we sell a player for eight figures and reinvest the proceeds and/or GR wins us a miracle promotion!

What a fabulous ground.

Burnley nowhere near as bad a place as made out by some; plenty of handsome buildings , wide pavements and friendly enough locals, Turf Moor is a great combination of traditional and the modern. Thoroughly enjoyable visit and justified the long trip. Lots to learn from them re our new ground.

Marred by a ridiculous security policy which took as long as the average flight from Termimsl 5. ‘Sir could I look under your hat please’ ?

What for, mini RPGs ?

We were dogged but second best. Tonight highlighted that our forwards are inadequate. And to get a decent performer at this level costs money the club doesn’t have.

Stand outs as usual, Cumming, Brown and Brannagan.

And the highly impressive Matos. He’s going to be some player . The young lad won all the tackles going and kept driving forward throughout.

Burnley’s defence is incredible; there seemed to be a force field around their goal. They swarmed like angry claret wasps when we got possession.Anywhere on the pitch .

Tyler completely obliterated. Late on Cam Bran had a sight of goal, took one more touch to set himself and slam, it was inevitably blocked.

We were competitive though and the locals we spoke to lost game rated our grit and especially the dread left back. They liked his energy.

Next week is an acid test. Do we sit in for a point at Pride Park or go for it? I say sit in, because our forwards aren’t up to it. We may as well play a false 9.

Decent Ox turnout and met a few Northern yellows; we have quite the yellow diaspora.

COYY.

Not going to be popular here but half of this squad won’t be here next season. Not for lack of effort but simply not good enough for Championship.

Next window we see the end of Phillips, Long, Sibley, Thorniley, Bennett, McEachran, Ingram

Sell Harris, Rodrigues, El Miz, Dale, Goodwin and even Leigh to L1 teams. Possibly Cam Bran to another Championship team. Get what we can for Tyler and rebuild.

Burnley are a very good team at this level but so many of our players had the first touch of a baby elephant. I would say second touch was a tackle but the first touch really was that bad it was beyond that. It is so difficult when you play a team where their goalkeeper was double the cost of your own starting XI but there was definitely a lack of cohesion tonight.

Also thought Hannibal the Animal was lucky to stay on the pitch.

‘Simply not good enough’ are your exact words 😂😂😂

This is exactly correct regarding Long. Burnley were very astute at switching the ball from the right (via Anthony), where Tyler was tracking back and assisting Greg, to the left where Longy was exposed by Placheta not tracking back. Not a criticism, we did well and Burnley were very strong, just an observation.

It meant Placheta had more attacking threat on the rare transition forward. Really hope we beat Derby, COYYs.

PS. I am finding the ref's attitudes of not wanting to upset established Championship Teams (particularly recent ex Prem Teams) highly irritating. It adds to the Financial disparity even further !

Tim, you say our strikers are inadequate, but then at the same time you say their defence is incredible/a force field around their goal, so I’d say, maybe it was just a tad too far for our lone striker to achieve anything in this game.

I don’t completely disagree with your comment, as I don’t think Harris is up to it, but believe Bradshaw is our best option from a bad bunch which might prove fruitful against lessor opponents.

Here’s hoping that they can find their goal scoring boots against the likes of Derby and Pompey. 2 big games, ala Plymouth & Cardiff over Christmas period!!

Well done on completing the journey and that you enjoyed the ground/some of the surrounding area etc.

100% with you re (some) Championship referees ( Hannibal would have had a 2nd yellow card in last nights game, if hed been in a yellow, ok Benson White, shirt instead of claret & blue for firstly that tackle then arguing vociferously with the referee- instead CamBran got a yellow card )

Overall an expected, and therefore not depressing result.
But again and again: comments that we just don’t have any sort of attack to speak of.
These “easy” games coming up …. Who’s going to score all the goals to beat them?
This lack of a goalscorer really is going to come back and bite us.
They were just excellent though weren’t they? You can see why they keep so many clean sheets, Placheta was constantly supporting the full back. Tyler was battling away in midfield. Whenever we got the ball the only option at times was a hoof up to Bradshaw up against two centre backs bigger and quicker than him.

We’re short of an option that can play that lone forward role more effectively for sure, but I don’t think you can say “it’ll come back to bite us” based on a £40m squad pinning us back.

Edit: meant to say £40m a year, just on wages, hadn’t considered transfer fees or anything else.

Burnley really are pretty dull to watch, aren’t they? Aside from that 15/20 minute spell in the first half, they didn’t really overwhelm us at all.

I thought we lacked a real desire to be brave and get something from the game. This was highlighted by the desire to pass back to Cumming repeatedly with less than 5 minutes to go.

Matos was outstanding. I’d be talking to Chelsea now, to see if we could have him for a whole year in 25/26. I’ve been a defender of Vaulks, when many have been piling on. However, Matos showed second half what it is to have genuine athleticism in the deep lying role. He covered so much ground and was combative. I liked him further forward, too.

Cumming was very good again. I’d be amazed if he doesn’t have admirers further up the food chain.

For the first time since he arrived, I thought Rowett got it wrong with the Sam Long selection. Having not played for a couple of weeks, it was always going to be difficult for him to come in and be sufficiently effective to nullify Burnley’s attacking threats. Unfortunately, he got the run around rather a lot, especially first half.

Can the fan fare over Goodrham calm down a touch? It’s probably unpopular but I cannot recall the last ‘outstanding’ game he had in this league. You know, the kind of game that screams £10,000,000 player. He is a prospect and has a high ceiling, but I think he’s a fair way off being a star at this level. Last night the game passed him by and it wasn’t for the first (or second) time.

Dembele was disappointing. Too many touches and he seems to slow us down. End product was an issue according to Birmingham fans, wasn’t it? I’d not disagree at this moment in time.

For Bradshaw see Harris #2. Oh to have a 2025 version of Ryan Taylor…or a transfer window to sign an alternative type striker to what we have.

Next week is big. Very BIG!

Spot on mate. The Vaulks and Branners yellows were a function of their players protesting that we had the audacity to show a bit of aggression, there was no foul or contact with either 😂

We parked in a church car park about 200 yards from ground. The bloke in there said get out quick at full time and you'll be away in no time. Sure enough right on the whistle we left the ground and I think we were on the M65 within less than 10 minutes - straight run home from there.

I am staggered by the self realisation that our front attacking unit and forwards are inadequate. Where have some of you been?

Don't worry though, as I have said, plenty on here and in the club think it's job done. The justification being we're ten points clear and the bottom five don't have enough time to chase us down or that the bottom three's 1ppg won't see much significant improvement to close down the gap. What was our form and PPG prior to Christmas Eve?

Whilst losing to Burnely by such a fine margin is no disgrace, they were in complete and utter control. We had two 'attempts' at goal, wouldn't call them serious either.

Matos and Cumming were both excellent. Ole has no chance of succeeding if we're going to send him on in games with 5 minutes to go. He looks far better than some of the other passengers we're carrying up top. Sam had a very difficult evening but it's not like we've not discussed that point before.

It's going to be a very tough run in.

We’re definitely lacking attacking threat in the attack and midfield positions. When you look at the bottom half of the league nobody has a regular goalscorer. Lang has the most for Pompey with 10, but he has scored those in 6 games and blanked in 20 games. Of the teams below us only Pompey have scored more, helped by a couple of big wins at home.

So overall I’m not sure the theme of needing a prolific striker achieve our goal of staying up is that crucial. But I think we do need more contribution across the whole attacking line and midfield. We seem over reliant on Leigh, Brown & Helik to get goals from defence, feels like they will dry up at some point.
