I’ve been saying this for about a year or so no, got vilified for it too at points but if we want promotion then Long should be RB only in emergencies.
About a year?!

So, two league games after he won Players Player of the Year and Fans Player of the Year at RB for a playoff team, you were calling for him to only be used as emergency cover?

And you're still bitter about people not being on board with that now?

Or the inability for long to pass to someone in yellow today. The way we play we need good wingbacks to move the ball through the phases and offer an attacking threat i e. Can cross a ball.
What I’ve been saying for ages. It cost us last year & also the fact is you can guarentee long is going to pick up at least one medium term injury a season. Right back and a striker are what we need the most right now, left back also but the other two first are a priority and the right back needs to be someone who will start. Kesler hayden or Marlon Fossey are the two who would improve us massive. Fossey would be my choice as he is adept with both feet.

He’s deteriorated for us as a right back for about the last 18 months. The season we got to the playoff final he played well. Apart from that he’s not good enough for us to be a starter at Right back. He offers next to no outlet for the style we play and because if it we are easy to read, numerous times he needed to overlap Murphy today and was instead dragging his heels on halfway. He should be a back up CB or used as first choice in a 3 now. Not as a right back. He doesn’t suit our style and hasn’t for about the last 18 months. Whether you like it or not. Many people are now saying it, I’m just saying, I’ve had that opinion for the last 12 months at least & his bad injuries which he’s not really ever recovered from have blunted his pace & explosiveness that he actually did have. We look so pedestrian down the right hand side because of it now.

Sam Smith - if Oxford signed him, I would be far from disappointed. He’s a menace.

(Yeah, he’s the Devil incarnate, but stik b
I thought exactly the same thing. He has bulked up significantly since he played with us.
I noticed that Robbo went to speak to him and put an arm around him after the game.

Smith is the best of his type in L1, a real handful. Phenomenal work rate, chases everything. Better than Hirst, better than Hardie and better than Parrot was at MK. I’d have him here in a heartbeat and he’d be worth every single penny of a million quid.

Yes, he was terrible when he was handed the two Player of the Season awards.

Even if Long's time as first choice RB is now coming to an end, you saying it when it was factually inaccurate iisn't the glorious achievement you're suggesting it is.

Be like me saying "I always said Luis Suarez was a terrible player, now Atleti let him go, guess I was right all along".

To put it in terms closer to home: no one on here has said Brannagan has impressed them in the first two games this season, but he won the same awards last season. If you were calling for Brannagan to go today, you'd look like a troll.

Sam Long had a poor game today, and was below his best at times last season. But so much of this post is absolute rubbish.

He is still one of the quickest players in the team. Just a week ago, he was linking up well with Henry and gave nothing away down the right from a decent Derby team. Last season he played left back, right back, centre back in a 4, centre back in a 3 and against Cambridge last season he was pretty much our only defender! It's hardly surprising that he struggled to settle into a role to get the best out of him, especially as he was laid low twice by covid. Even this season he's had two different players ahead of him out wide.

No one is guaranteed anything this season and if we get a better right back then they should play. But some of the talk writing off Sam Long after a below par performance is massively premature.

It’s my opinion, I don’t hate Sam Long, I don’t personally have a problem with him. I’m just able to admit when someone isn’t good enough in a certain position anymore to be first choice. He’s a better CB than he is RB. Brannagan is a completely different case and you know it. So that’s a woeful comparison.

Based on what Radio Oxford where saying on the pregame show Sam Smith is rarely used as a number 9 with Ironside usually playing there and Smith in behind in more of a shadow striker number 10 role

He looked like the focal point of their attack to me. I don’t think Findlay will have many tougher games all season and to be fair he coped really well. Smith was a class - or two - above Collins the previous week. He looks the complete striker at L1 level.

Don't forget though that cambridge brought there league Cup fixture against Millwall forward a week so they would be sharper than us. They were the only team to request this in the EFL. Yesterday was their 3rd match

Apart from scoring of course!

With Kyle joseph potentially coming, is this now put to bed or still ongoing Cotswolds Cowboy?. Maybe, we will revisit it in jan?

Kyle Joseph is only 20 so won't count towards the squad cap. I believe we're after 2 forwards and will send O'Donkor on loan once we have them. This will allow a change in formation to a 3 5 2 if needed ,We were after another winger but with what Karl was saying about Goodrham training well and his performance when he came on yesterday I don't think we will see another incoming in that position. 4 incomings before the end of the window , 1 x left back, 1 x right back, 2 x strikers and we're pretty much there.
