I think he was fortunate getting through the two tackles, but his finish was excellent as he only really had one place to put it.

He did really well to keep his balance and get his shot away. Also the confidence to find the top corner, there’s many a young player who’d have been looking for a well positioned team mate in that situation. As has been said, every week won’t be like that for him but it’s a real shot in the arm for us that we suddenly have a match winning player on cloud nine rather than one who might have been gently feeling his way into the first team set up.

Cambridge were a very well organised side, controlled the tempo of the game well by little fouls nearly everytime one of our players ran by them. They will take points off of a few top sides this season .
Can understand why there first three matches have all been decided by a single goal .

Yeah, don’t think they’re going to have many 4-4 draws this season ! They weren’t though a park the bus sort of team, they are well drilled but had periods of dominance and break forward quickly and in numbers. From their viewpoint the only real criticism would be that they didn’t really fashion many clear cut opportunities from some good situations. As you say, they will be a test for plenty of others.

They were there last night with a little padlock symbol next to them.

We've been contacted by a number of fans regarding issues scanning some of the season tickets today. If you were affected can you let us know on ouspinfo@gmail.com, and let us know which turnstile you were using.

We seemed quite rigid in our formation yesterday. Our centre backs stayed in position, they looked really solid but last year McNally carried the ball and broke the line etc. Our full backs stayed in position and didn't really contribute going forward. We just seemed quite static and easy to play against. The only time we really looked dangerous was when the Bate and Goodrham and went past players meaning Cambridge had to come out of their natural positions to deal with them; that then created a bit of space.

Moore and Findlay did look really solid. We all know what Moore is all about but Findlay looks a proper defender me, but it is a change of style. We seem to be more solid centrally but have less ability bringing the ball out etc.

As for full backs, it's all been said. Long was poor and Seddon was solid but I don't think Seddon contributed much going forward. Two full backs that could genuinely get forward and contribute defensively would make us a much more effective team. Full backs are such an important position these days, they can be much more influential than they were 20 years ago.

I took a non Oxford mate to his first Ox game and asked for his thoughts. McGuane was the only player who stood out to him, and he just thought we looked very rigid, solid but not that fluid. I do think we will become a bit more fluid, but that was a touch watch yesterday.

Yes despite being a hairum scarum listen was surprised the stats show us with 6 shots on target and them none.

The highlights are locked until the following day. Probably so that folk paySky to watch them on match day.
Thanks Malc, all working this morning.

I’ve been offline for a while and didn’t remember that - must be getting a bit impatient in my old age too!

I think they doubled up on Murphy a lot of the time, making it very difficult for him to get properly involved. We should have made use of the space that produced, but didn't seem to manage it. He looked suddenly a lot better when switched to the left (perhaps because it mixed things up for the Cambridge defence?). I was suddenly a little disappointed he was taken off.
Thought Murphy was poor. Reminded me of Dele Alli, bit weak and no end product.

Thought Seddon had a better game though, but team was poor all over apart from the substitutes.

I’d suggest team are going to play a different style this season. ‘Oxcelona’ has been put in the attic because it hasn’t brought ultimate success over last three years.

Evidenced by Cambridge not having a shot and by the amount of times the centre backs were launching long balls. By Brannagan not really being sure what his role in the team currently is. By Taylor being left high and dry most of the game.

Thought both full backs decent today. Credit to Seddon, he was always showing for the ball and he was far more positionally disciplined.

It’s not going to be pleasing on the eye to many.

However the little man invasion completely did for Cambridge. Crisper passing and accomplished ball carrying in last 15 leading to a superb last minute moment.

Oh and credit to the manager; all the substitutions were well timed. They usually are.

COYY.

Rather than it being a change of styles I just think we have added the cross field balls to the wingers as a more direct option.

I like us more solid and to see 4 corners in a row won by our players forcing two great saves is fantastic.

It’s all coming together.

I get the Dele Ali comparison. He’s the opposite of a Sykes high energy type of player and looks a little lethargic/disinterested at times. I think that’s his style of play and lack of match fitness but I think he showed enough to get excited about what’s to come.

No; not when we bring in players so late and are still looking for a few more into August.. How can they possibly have had time to gel? We are 3/4 weeks behind schedule.
I'm sure we could have brought in 3 or 4 players weeks ago. Not the same quality as Bate though, he wasn't available 3 or 4 weeks ago. We have 4 loan spots available and those can only be filled with quality if you wait, otherwise you end up with a Smith or even a Roofe on their first loan and at a stage when they are unlikely to be ready.

Not able to update the attendance on the other thread as it's now closed, which I find annoying as this post will now seem a little out of context.

Anyway, very strong sales yesterday of just under 500, which leaves us at a fraction under 7,000 home fans, excluding boxes. It's about 400 ahead of the first game of last season (Charlton). That game ended up with 7,067 home fans, so I'd expect to be above 7,500 home fans with boxes and walk-ups added in. This should mean a total attendance of about 8,300/8,500 depending on how many Cambridge bring.

The score? A win, any win will do.
So we ended up with 7,462 home fans, meaning I was about 100 out on my projection. It was almost exactly 400 up on last season's opener against Charlton, so not bad, but a bit less than it should have been if the club hadn't completely messed up season tickets, commercial, and general marketing this summer.

What threw the total attendance prediction out was the P**s poor turn out from Cambridge. Less than 600 after two wins is very poor in my opinion.

I was right about a win, any win, though!!!
