For me the only problem with McGuane switching to a CDM role is that ball-carrying is one of his strongest attributes and that those opportunities might be more limited and less likely to lead to good chances in a deeper role.

If Robinson thinks he could be that round peg for the round hole then he has my support and wouldn’t be the first player to switch roles, or positions during their footballing lifetime. Still time in this window for the mythical enforcer to appear though.

mythical 🤣

Or he gets carried away, continues carrying the ball and surrenders possession in a more precarious area of the pitch.

Time will tell.

Yes. After Savage made his debut for Man United, I was intrigued as to whether he was actually any good, or another “you’re playing because of your Dad” kinda player.

Watched quite a lot of the highlights during their pre-season tour, and when he played, he looked like a very good player. Dominated the game against Melbourne Victory, and played very well against Liverpool as well.

It’s also not very hard to go on YouTube and watch some of his highlights whilst playing for the youth teams.

So a couple of YouTube videos with highlights from pre-season and youth team games is enough for you to conclude that we would be a "very good signing" and "exactly what we need"?

I'll predict that if McGuane continues to play in DMC, he will continue to get rave reviews but the team will under-perform and we will condede lots of goals.

Due to his inability to play the role effectively or because Robbie will not have recruited adequate full backs? 🤣

If he plays well then is that his fault? We conceded against Derby when he was moved out of that position…

I’ll predict that we’ll concede more goals with McGuane not in the DMC position than when he is.

There is truth in that. At least in terms of us making the enquiry. No idea if Bate changes that or if we want both.

Combined with the club bidding almost a million pounds for Hardie last week, it’s becoming more and more clear that the backing from the board is fantastic, and that the owners are serious about pushing for promotion. They aren’t sanctioning bids, rubber stamping both new signings and very large new contracts for our most sought after players, and ponying up for million pound training ground improvements because they fancy knocking about in League One indefinitely.

As I’ve said multiple times going back to January - there’s plenty more cash in the pot.
That's all fantastic, as mentioned previously, lets now then transfer all of the positive could do to we have done.
Clearly with all the support the board are giving kr, this should result in kr getting the players we need for the season

Plenty more than you’ve seen of him, so I think I’m entitled to have a somewhat educated opinion on how good he his, based on the fact I’ve actually watched him play football. He’s a good player, and has held his own at CDM against some decent teams. You don’t play for Man United, unless you have something about you. If we were to go for a young loan to occupy that CDM role, then he’s a very good option to have at the club.

Doesn’t really matter what I think, but if the club have enquired about him coming here then that’s good enough indicator for me.

Imagine the #bantz when his dad came to a game. Worth signing for that reason alone.

It’s not his fault, but it will be a by-product of playing someone in a position that requires defensive nous and discipline who hasn’t shown that he has either.

I’m a massive McGuane fan, I think he’s a magnificent footballer, but he isn’t a holding midfielder and that is what we need.

Going back to MM, I’m sure I’ve read somewhere recently that, although he admits it’s not his favourite position, he did actually start out as a CDM when he was academy age. As someone else has recently said, he looks to have lots of ability but when playing further forward he frustratingly drifts out of the game. At CDM he has to stay focused and is involved at the heart of things a lot more. We might actually just see the best of him there.

I think his ball carrying abilities are better suited to a deep-lying role, because there's literally more distance to cover. Once he reaches 2/3rds of the pitch, it gets more compact and he has to lay it off anyway, but taking it as a DM and breaking a high press does most of the damage.

Or he gets carried away, continues carrying the ball and surrenders possession in a more precarious area of the pitch.

I mean, you could equally say that of Gorrin being a less technically gifted player, when pressed he's going to be more likely to concede possession than someone who can turn away and play off a good pass.

Camara from Plymouth is the obvious choice for me. As they turned down a bid from us for Hardin, do you think we’ve asked the question about Camara? Would take a big offer, but he’s in the final year of his deal…
He would be ideal and I’ve read somewhere that their asking price is around £450k which if true would be worth the outlay as he’s worth probably in the same region of what we value Cam at. He is also represented by new era global

Agree, he'll look good but he's not brave enough to put his body on the line to block the shots from 20 yards which inevitably beat Eastwood and Stevens.

Once again, proof that things change very quickly at this stage of the season. Bate had been on our radar but was looking like going to the Championship a week ago. Robinson heavily involved in getting the deal through, as has happened with a number of our signings. If we criticise Robinson for being too hands on then we should praise him when we pull off deals like this.

Getting a striker and full back (s) are the next priorities, but as Ryan has said, a significant bid was made for Ryan Hardie and whilst Plymouth don't have to sell, money talks and I think we will see him at Oxford this season. We're undoubtedly fishing in very different waters this season and some will get away, and some will take longer to land than we would hope for. But, patience (and a big wallet!) will help us hopefully get the sort of team that we need to really challenge at the top.
If we can get Hardie this season I will be very very impressed. Have been critical of some things so far but will equally admit I’m wrong if we do end up signing that calibre of player. I hope we can get Hardie. He’s a player I’ve admired for about 2 seasons.

McGuane has certainly improved his defensive ability, my issue has been more around losing his abilities going forwards. He's certainly miles better than Gorrin on the ball, if he can get close to being as defensively solid then he will do very well there. Ideally I'd hope we're working on another defender sitting in on occasion allowing MM to bomb on after winning the ball, it shouldn't be too hard to work out between them and would hopefully get the best of of MM.
