In the friendlies against Coventry and West Brom, and the one league game at Derby, Marcus McGuane was a different player to what we saw last season. Tenacious, robust and as has been said, came out of one on ones with the ball or a free kick. I don’t think we need a 6 foot square enforcer, Marcus will do that job.

Corrected for you (y)

Holds on to the ball a little too long for my liking re mcguane. Did alright vs derby but not the answer to our dcm needs imo.

McGuane is a big, strong lad, absolutely no reason he can’t become a defensive midfielder and has the plus side of being technically good as well.
To become an effective holding midfielder, McGuane would have to cut out so much of his game that makes him special. No running with the ball, no driftting into wide areas, no fancy footwork. In time, maybe he could do it, but I don't think we should want to drill McGuane in the positional discipline that is needed to be a good holding midfielder.

There is truth in that. At least in terms of us making the enquiry. No idea if Bate changes that or if we want both.

Combined with the club bidding almost a million pounds for Hardie last week, it’s becoming more and more clear that the backing from the board is fantastic, and that the owners are serious about pushing for promotion. They aren’t sanctioning bids, rubber stamping both new signings and very large new contracts for our most sought after players, and ponying up for million pound training ground improvements because they fancy knocking about in League One indefinitely.

As I’ve said multiple times going back to January - there’s plenty more cash in the pot.

Have you ever actually seen any of these players play?

Yes. After Savage made his debut for Man United, I was intrigued as to whether he was actually any good, or another “you’re playing because of your Dad” kinda player.

Watched quite a lot of the highlights during their pre-season tour, and when he played, he looked like a very good player. Dominated the game against Melbourne Victory, and played very well against Liverpool as well.

It’s also not very hard to go on YouTube and watch some of his highlights whilst playing for the youth teams.

Stop asking difficult questions

Difficult questions? The only time that would be a difficult question to answer would be if I was deemed clinically blind. As a football fan, you tend to watch football matches. Funny that…

In those three games, yes, just three games, I’ve already seen enough on which to base my opinion compared to last season. Can he maintain that form, who knows, but he deserves the chance in that role.

Fair enough, that’s your opinion.

Personally, I want someone in who is seasoned in that position, understands their role and will not compromise the defenders behind them. When you consider the money being bid on players like Hardie, I’d suggest we have a bit in the pot to go after a player with more pedigree as a CDM than MM.

MM has a role to play in his marauding role in CM. I don’t think he needs to be stifled as a ball winning player.

Once again, proof that things change very quickly at this stage of the season. Bate had been on our radar but was looking like going to the Championship a week ago. Robinson heavily involved in getting the deal through, as has happened with a number of our signings. If we criticise Robinson for being too hands on then we should praise him when we pull off deals like this.

Getting a striker and full back (s) are the next priorities, but as Ryan has said, a significant bid was made for Ryan Hardie and whilst Plymouth don't have to sell, money talks and I think we will see him at Oxford this season. We're undoubtedly fishing in very different waters this season and some will get away, and some will take longer to land than we would hope for. But, patience (and a big wallet!) will help us hopefully get the sort of team that we need to really challenge at the top.

I have always found McGuane to be a frustrating player to watch in the past. Bags of talent, but lightweight in possession, would pop in and out of games and tire too easily when he started. This said last Saturday he was a revelation, and we saw the potential most of us knew he had. If he can play close to that for 75% of the games this season (of course ideally more), then he will feel like a new signing. Early days, but if we had just signed him what would we have been saying this week........

We will see him, playing against us in a Plymouth kit.

I was highly sceptical of McGuane at CDM - vocally so on here.

But he was excellent in that role on Saturday. He didn't really do anything with the ball or in an attacking sense all game - but his defensive positioning, marking and tackling were all terrific. So for the first time, I actually kind of believed that he could do it. If he can show the discipline, he's got the bulk and strength.

So I think we will see him playing behind Cam and Bate, with two of our wingers then playing behind a striker. Likely means less starts for Henry and Bodin, but they will still be impactful off the bench (and we will have injuries.....)

Bate looks an excellent signing, and we can now chalk off one position from our list.
LB, RB, ST still to go, and maybe another pacy forward/winger for depth. Still would like to see us act with urgency because we continue to be a Sam Long or Matty Taylor injury away from big trouble!

If Robinson thinks he could be that round peg for the round hole then he has my support and wouldn’t be the first player to switch roles, or positions during their footballing lifetime. Still time in this window for the mythical enforcer to appear though.

I have no issue at all with triangular pegs in oblong holes. I find it weird that fans define a player by one position and think versatile players are key to a squad.

Having said that, I don't think McGuane is suited to the DMC role that we need. It's doing him a disservice, and we will be weaker for it if he doesn't play it in a very safe and disciplined way.

He’s a good creative midfielder but he could become an even better CDM, only time will tell.

Looked the best player on the pitch against Derby. Cambridge will be a different battle, but I'm excited to see how he does. This move might just transform his career, and our midfield.
