Despite my concerns McGuane was the real deal Saturday against Derby in that defensive midfield role. So not sure we need more with Gorrin in the background. Bate is a starter for me

He didn't play there on Saturday? He played in a 4-2-3-1 alongside Brannagan who was often the deeper of the two midfielders.

Disagree. He was effectively patrolling in front of the back 4. Cam went forward a bit more. What was noticeable was staying on his feet rather than falling over regularly last season. A better understanding of what he needs to do. As I said before I was not convinced it would work but initially seems to be the real deal. Time will tell.

Not for me. Goes to ground far too easily to be a ball winning midfielder (think Wigan away last season).

A robust and imposing ball winner is required in that position.

NB: I fully expect Robinson to go with McGuane though.
For me that's a bit of a case of 'that was then, this is now'. I agree with you - he was a bit soft in that fixture. But at Derby he was much, much more gritty and can't remember a moment he entered a challenge and didn't either come out with the ball or win a free kick. He looked a bully at times.

I'm not against another DM coming in as there's certainly space for one. But I'd question why we kept Gorrin for starters and then where that leaves McGuane who's been brilliant throughout pre season and arguably MotM on Saturday.

For me, It leaves McGuane fighting it out with the rest of the centre midfielders to get a starting position as the 8 or the 10.

I’m absolutely certain that McGuane was not in the frame to be our holding midfielder at the start of the summer. There had been nothing that’d suggested he’d fit the bill in that role.

Let’s see what happens. I’d love to be proved wrong with McGuane. Based on one league performance. I’ll reserve judgement for now.

We’ve been badly needing more physicality across the whole side for a few seasons now, you need a mixture of that as well as the pretty football to get out of league one.

There are some big sides who we always struggle against, and we always seem to struggle at set pieces at both ends of the field, where we haven‘t got enough height and physical presence at our disposal, other than a couple of centre backs.

There’s still time for this to be addressed and it has been talked about a lot. Wildschut will add physicality eventually but unfortunately that won’t be for quite a while. We really do need a few more “bigger” physically stronger players amongst our remaining signings.

I am not sure that Bate will be back up to Brannagan .

He won’t. I expect a midfield of Bate Brannagan McGuane in the majority of home games and a couple of away games.

But there will be times (especially away from home) where one will have to be benched for a specialist DM when we are up against it (probably McGuane) otherwise teams walk through our midfield with ease.

If Gorrin had played 4/5 pre season games and looked sharp I’d be fairly confident. However he looks miles away from being fit.

In all fairness his two games in PSF against championship and Saturdays game he did well maybe he’s been told to cut that out and his performance was MOM so I would be happy for him to continue.

This should well and truly boil the P**s of those that constantly talk shite about Robinson. Bate was approached by championship clubs, but decided to join Oxford instead. Absolute scenes.

ROBINSONS YELLOW ARMY! [emoji590]
Totally agree, hopefully keep the moaners of Robinsons back. In an ideal world it would be amazing to have all signings in place before a ball is kicked. But as long as we get the quality right then for me that is key.
So Left Back, Right Back, Young quick forward and a pacy winger. That should do it. COYY

Just been reading the OM, and KR has alluded to Smyth going out on loan. Wouldn’t surprise me if signed another CDM to shore things up in that area. Gorrin is miles away from being match-fit/sharp enough to come into the side - Saturday showed this. We definitely need another option at CDM.

Still would like to see 2 new FB’s and a striker very soon.
Pleased with the Bate signing but the recall could be a nuisance, if he was to have a blinding first 6 months with us and help us to be around the playoffs/automatics and then he is recalled to maybe go back to Leeds or elsewhere.
We could struggle to dons a suitable replacement and all the hard work could be undone.

Welcome Lewis

Always a danger of a recall, but if things are going well for him here, why would Leeds want him to go elsewhere? The reports surrounding his move suggest that we were his choice (against Champ. and other L1 clubs), so I’d venture that if all parties are happy, they wouldn’t move him against his will.

In the friendlies against Coventry and West Brom, and the game at Derby, Marcus McGuane was a different player to what we saw last season. Tenacious, robust and as has been said, came out of one on ones with the ball or a free kick. I don’t think we need a 6 foot square enforcer, Marcus will do that job.

McGuane is a big, strong lad, absolutely no reason he can’t become a defensive midfielder and has the plus side of being technically good as well.
