Sorry but just on that penultimate paragraph, I fear that may be rewriting history a bit. Evans joined on loan in November; he didn’t appear in the league until mid December. I also wouldn’t describe him as an ‘out and out leftback’ - he was very much a young LB/LWB/LW still figuring out his best position. Likewise Kenny joined in January once Baldock had been recalled. If they did overlap, it would only have been for a couple of weeks. To suggest that we went the full season with strong backup in each position is disingenuous.
I am aware that Kenny replaced Baldock - Long was there the entire time as the second right back. That was my point. We had two right backs available at any one moment all season. Whether it was ‘obvious’ that Long was the backup or not isn’t the point: he was there.

And yes, Evans joined after the season started, but we had Cameron Gayle before then and moved for Evans once Gayle didn’t work out. We had bodies, which is more than we’ve had in those areas for the last couple of years. Evans might have been ‘attack minded’ or more of a LWB compared to Skarz and his defensive style, but the point is that he again provided a second player competing / covering one spot. None of that is disingenuous and it disproves what has been said previously about how we have no less defenders now than we did under Appleton in L2.

We need defenders - we don’t even have Forde pretending to be a right back anymore.

I mean I don’t agree with how we have conducted ourselves in the transfer market this summer but that’s utter BS. The owners are backing KR big time but he’s shown an inability to build a settled balanced squad for two seasons now and the buck stops with him. We are top end with our budget now & if he can’t build a balanced squad then it is KR who should be in last chance saloon.
I don't think you're far from the truth there. With ambitious owners and an increased budget this season, if we don't get in the play-offs at least, Robbo might very well be looking down the barrel after 4/5 years at the club. Especially if his no.1 fan, Thaiger, is no longer chairman by then. The alternative manager options, however, can look quite scary, when you look at the names touted about for jobs in our league. We have to be careful what we wish for.

If we after this season were looking for a manager, I wouldn’t look further than the manager who will be in the opposing dugout on Saturday. He’s done very well with his Cambridge side, shown he’s tactically astute and picked up some big results last season against the big sides. Conducted himself in a great way after the game at our place last season as well.

Yes, he was very impressive. Made a great start beating MK on Saturday and Millwall last night with two 1-0 wins.

I seem to remember having this same debate over Damian Batt's defensive capabilities. Very good at going forward, but IMO, couldn't defend, which is the fundamental job of a RB. Same thing now with Seddon.

We shouldn’t be playing catch up though should we. We have an easyish start & the fixtures will only get tougher. You don’t want players gelling during the season. That’s what pre season is for, you get the bulk of your business done and then you add the finishing touches to it.
In an ideal world you’re right but there’s so many different factors that can delay all this (agents, other teams trying to sign the same players, re-location considerations).
Karl can’t just go into the Westgate and pick what he wants off the shelf.

Blackpool signing Charlie Patino on loan from Arsenal, presumably in the spot Brannagan would have taken

Seddon played better than Taylor and Brannagan vs Derby. Taylor should be scrutinised for fluffing his decent chance and brannagan did f all. ;)

May be that they get less scrutiny because *checks notes* they've both been consistently among our best and most consistent performers (if not the best two) at the club for the last 3 or 4 years.

The conversation about Seddon is neither personal nor purely based on the Derby game.

There are factors that can delay signings of course, but a well-oiled machine can also get signings done in a timely fashion.
For me, there's a bit too much leaning on the old crutch of 'things happen, player X needs to move to free up player Y, players become available late etc'.

Actually, it goes further than this (and this isn't targeted at you specifically) - there seems to be an accepted fact in some quarters that if you want the best you have to wait 'til the bitter end.
I'm curious as to where exactly this understanding that the 'best players' can only be signed late on in the window has come from? Is there actually any evidence for this?

The L1 PFA team of the season for 21/22 contained 8 players who were already at their respective clubs from the previous season. Of the 3 who were new signings, 2 were signed early (Whatmough and Twine - 4th and 8th June respectively) and one was a loan but still over a month before the season started (Bazuna - 1st July - which is particularly curious as some would have us believe that PL clubs won't let their youngsters go on loan until all of pre-season has been completed).

So identifying top players at this or the level below early and completing the deal before pre-season even starts is do-able. Yes, both of the above were OOC - but so was Nicky Cadden (for example). Was there not any competition for Whatmough and/or Twine?.
I suspect that this is where a DofF would make all the difference (I think almost everyone is now on the same sheet on this).
However achieved, they managed to somehow insulate themselves from this domino effect/relying on other things to fall into place. Some on here would have us all believe that such ambition is entirely unrealistic in the smoke and mirrors of the transfer window.

For the avoidance of any doubt, no-one (literally no-one) is suggesting that the signings of the likes of Murphy or new contracts for Cam Bran are anything other than massive plays by the club. However, that doesn't mean that questions can't be asked about the sheer amount of activity that remains to be done - as evidenced by the bench at the weekend.

I'm not even doubting that we have probably been stung a couple of times this Summer or that we have genuinely been unlucky in some regards, but please let's not pretend that signing 4 or 5 of your core squad once the season has started is either inevitable - or even worse (and as some seem to suggest) - to be regarded as a positive.

Kion Etete (who we have been linked to on this forum) is apparantly joining Cardiff City on a permenent deal.

Gossip on the other social media site saying asking Plymouth fans whats Ryan Hardie like apparently he’s coming here……..any comments @UTO?
We were/are interested in him. I don’t think he’ll be coming. Would take a big offer.
We were interested in another experienced striker whose been a success in The Championship before. Playing abroad now, earning big money. He signed a new deal over there last week. Can’t blame him!
The young Tottenham striker we like, signing permanently for a Championship club. Can’t compete with their offer.

Not read anything on here since before weekend. So don’t know what’s been said or discussed.
We had a RB nearly complete last week. We let Forde then go as a replacement was pretty much done!
KR then says he’s happy with Golding as cover Saturday evening!
KR better not have pulled the plug and again decided against new full backs!!!
