World Cup Moaning Thread

Should be used like tennis.... let the Captain have 3 "shots" to use VAR. :)

It's a good idea, but I can't see how it would work in practice.

What about if there's a challenge in the box which results in the ball ending up in the keeper's hands (I.e. it doesn't go out of play), the attacking team thinks it was a foul but the defending team are keen to play on and quickly start a counter attack.

When does the aggrieved team get to submit a challenge? Do they have to wait until the ball goes out of play? If so, what happens if the opposition goes up the other end and scores? Is their goal then disallowed if it is subsequently judged that it should have been a penalty?

OR, is play stopped as soon as the team submits a challenge? If so, what's to stop teams from doing so when their opposition is breaking quickly, even if they don't actually think they were fouled?

To me, challenges just won't work because there's not the same natural stoppages in play like there is in most other sports.

I think VAR has been a farce in this tournament. The referees don't seem to really understand when they're supposed to be using it, let alone pundits and fans. And even when it is used, there's been occasions where dubious decisions have been made. I'm still not convinced France should have had a penalty, for example.

I think that, whilst it's a good idea, football fans/players/owners/mangers are all going to have to accept that even with VAR, not every decision is going to be right (especially when you consider the fact that a lot of decisions are a matter of opinion. Two people can look at the same slo-mo replay and come to completely different conclusions).

Instead, I think the powers that be should focus their energy (and funds) on improving the standard of refereeing at all levels of the game.

Captain of the player that gets "fouled" can shout "VAR" rather than "FFS ref thats a pen!"
Play stops.
Ref reviews, if its thought to be a hoax call to slow/stop the game then they are off, straight red.
If its genuine then penalty awarded but number of reviews still goes down by 1 to stop multiple breaks in play.
Bit of carrot & some stick.....

The current VAR system is no better than just having a ref!

Sorry still just sounds too messy and open to abuse to me!

First they set a framework - only penalties and serious foul play for example.
Second they create a consistent set of rules, including Refs call on marginal decisions like France's penalty
Third apply the rules consistently
Fourth tell everyone why it was or was not given after the game
Fifth, throw it all in the bin

I'd rather have Trevor Kettle. VAR is nearly as bad at the moment, but shouldn't be.

Portugal can be included in the moaning thread. That’s all there players do, and as for Pepe what a dislikable t**t he is. Tapped on shoulder and falls on the floor like he’s been shot!

Awful team to watch, a complete bore fest every time they play.

Most mediterainian and south American national team players tend to be masters at conning as well as pecking officials heads additionally they're experts at performing olympic gold medal standard, oscar nominated actions if an opposition player so much as glances in their direction!o_O

At least VAR will put a stop to all that.....or , perhaps it wont:unsure:

Uruguay v Portugal in knockout stage please. Both boring, so one can go home.

Ooops, just made roughly the same point in the other thread.

The other side to that is that it probably means we get Russia vs. Spain in the other game.....which could be great!

I'm not answering it here.

The lack of yellow cards against Saudi was a joke - the left back marking Sanchez took him out half a dozen times,, the centre half was kicking lumps of of Saurez and the Saudis were cynically fouling every time the Uruguayans showed a bit of pace (both times).

Seriously, players are getting away with too much.

Pepe should have been VARd for cheating there. What a <censored> and not sanctioned for it

I don't think VAR can be used for possible cheating cases which if I'm right makes it a bigger joke.
They talk about clear and obvious mistakes being overturned. It's contextually no different to a penalty or foul not being given. What Pepe did was try and get an opponent sent off. By not looking, it gives the perception VAR is only for attackers

Mind you getting into heaven would be easier and life arguably more interesting* if God only enforced say, 3, of the 10 alleged commandments.

What I'm saying is that it seems to me that with each world cup, FIFA tries an innovative interpretation of the rules rather than just getting the best referees to enforce them properly.

* for the neutral viewer, obvs.
