Ex Player Jack Stevens

So Rotherham have used two different keepers this season - Vickers & Johnasson - and they're #s 1 & 7 in that list of statistical top performers in League One this year.

Sunderland's backup keeper is Lee Burge, who is pretty experienced at this level.

Wednesday's backup keeper, Joe Wildsmith, is supposed to be pretty decent as well.

None of which is to say that Eastwood is not a decent League One backup keeper - he certainly is, and GK is not an area where we lack appropriate depth.
But, equally, other League One teams have good keeper depth as well.

Lee Burge is pants.

I call it realism.

Stevens last season one of the top L1 keepers. This season he’s had issues due to an illness.

Eastwood is bang average, you seem to think he’s the second coming of Petr Cech.

Am I being biased saying Brannagan & Kane are 2 of the best midfielders in the league?
You are talking absolute garbage. Eastwood is every bit as good as Stevens and the latter's illness 'excuse' simply doesn't cut it. If he hadn't been fully fit to return he wouldn't have been selected. Nobody's suggesting Eastwood is the second coming. He's simply a very good keeper, as is Stevens on his day.

Doesn't surprise me. Slow down to Bolton's first and in no-mans-land for the third. He seemed to half come out, made no attempt to cut out the cross and left a empty goal for Bakayoko hit. He's made a few outstanding reflex saves but also has looked shaky on crosses.
Slow to the first and in no mans land for the third, describes it well.

Jack Stevens is a good goalkeeper. Absolutely no doubt there. He was exceptional last season but has not hit the same standards this season in either spell. Whether that is due to his illness, a loss of form, the defence being poorer, having fans back or something else, I don't know. Simon Eastwood is also a good goalkeeper, especially as back up. He was poor at the beginning of last season and is prone to shots from distance and getting down quickly. But he's far from being "bang average" and performed well when call upon this season. I don't understand the need to run him down to be honest.
Eastwood is still a class goalkeeper. He's dammed if he does, and dammed if he doesn't. Did he really do such a bad job that stevens was brought back in?

Why just the 'keeper?

Why not sell all of our players and bring in better ones for a fraction of the cost?

Because, given the interest and offers that we have already fielded for Stevens, it’s clear that clubs are willing to overpay for him.

Are they/were they though?

Why would clubs be willing to overpay for him?

Absolute rot being spoken on here by the usual suspects .
While if Jack had pulled off a couple of worldies then we might have got some more points he has hardly made an error to concede a goal.
To say in no man's land after that fantastic cross for Bolton third I suggest you look at goals conceded from the Premier league down to see how tough to prevent that as a keeper.
Loving the great support on here , talk about enjoying knocking players !

I would suggest we have two very capable keepers for this level.
If they were as good /bad as some people make out they would be playing at a higher/lower level.
Don’t forget keepers rarely get injured so unlike an outfield player who needs a rest or can be subbed once they are chosen as no1 they usually stay there

With both keepers, there haven't been many obvious mistakes, but all the long shots seem to go in! Not sure if that's because the attackers aren't being closed down though.
Watching on iFollow this point becomes glaringly big to me. We DON'T close down well enough on the edge of the box - or at least far worse than most teams we've played this season. Part of that is down to Gorrin being out and none of our current midfield able to do the same job, and part of it is because we attack so heavily we are open to counters where we don't have the manpower in defence to close down.

A few times this season we've come up against teams that defend with 6 or more players and attack with 4 or less. It means that we often have trouble breaking them down, and when we go for ranged strikes we mostly find a player launching himself in front of the shot and getting a block in because they've got the numbers back still if that player is taken out the game or we dummy with a pass.

On the flip side we tend to attack with 6 or 7 players, and defend with 3 or 4, so when the opposition counters quickly what quite often happens is we defend the first attack, the ball comes out to a late arrival and we don't get the block on the shot from outside the box because we don't have the numbers in defence and are often slow out to close down (Moore particularly weak at this). It contributes to a brilliant attacking style, but a lot of vulnerability at the back, especially from ranged shots - which is exactly what we've seen all season.

Should the keepers do better with some of them? Possibly, yes. But I think the blame could easily be shared equally across the back 4, the midfield and KR for the way we set up too. I'm sure we'd all like to have the defensive ability of a Rotherham or a Wycombe, but at the same time we don't half see some brilliant attacking games too.

Not ‘a lot’ but I bet there are 7/8 clubs with better. Eastwood is a very average L1 keeper nowadays
I would be surprised. Which 6 or 7 do you think ( back up keepers) are better than Eastwood?
I would suspect that he is one of the best back up keepers in L1. There are probably a few more good ones, but not many better than SE

Not sure that we do. As Tony said Eastwood is a decent back up L1 keeper. Not a 'bang average' L1 keeper.
To be honest, and apologies if I'm splitting hairs here, I would consider a decent backup L1 keeper someone who is bang average.

Suppose it's all about looking at the various levels, but I also consider Jeff Hendricks bang average, and he's an international Premier League midfielder.

Hayden Carter thumped in the third from 30 yards and if flew past Stevens but it was not in the top bin for me. No one went out to him to close down the shot

Every shot is going in though It seems.

I’m more concerned about his distribution at times ~ kicking the ball out of play on the full and even throwing the ball out of play tonight.
