Away Match Day Thread 18/9/21 L1: Cheltenham Town v OUFC

Cheltenham are a good side, and that is thanks to having a manager in Mike Duff who is probably destined for the PL, albeit more Sean Dyche than Graham Potter.

This is how I see it:

Mike Duff would probably get Oxford promoted to the Champ faster than KR.

Mike Duff, in 10 years, will be managing at a higher level than KR.

Would I want to sacrifice KR for Duff? No. We are incredibly lucky to a be a football club totally intent on playing young technically gifted footballers and encouraging them to be brave in possession with an attacking style that yields entertainment.

Sure, it didn’t work yesterday against a very well organised side, repeat for Wycombe, but before yesterday we had the highest xG in open play of anyone in the league, and under KR have always scored a shed load of goals.

So KR might not be our best ticket to the top, but he’s proven himself more than capable of giving it a good crack, all with a philosophy that other fans would beg for.

And yes, he should have got another defensive midfielder. With Duff we’d have five.

Sorry, are you saying that you would rather have a manager who cannot get us promoted and all because of his philosophy? You would rather have Robinson giving it a "good crack" and failing? That because of XG we should all be grateful for Robinson?

I despair.

If we have one of the highest xG stats, it is revealing that 13 of the teams in the division have actually *scored* more than us. Which I think proves what many people have been saying - we don't take enough of our chances. Is that fair?

I think we'd all agree that is a fair assessment. If you think of Winnall's studs only connecting in front of an open goal, Sykes passing when through on goal, Whyte somehow missing, Holland when through against Wimbledon, Taylor with a few poor headers by his standards. Put them away and we'd be right at the top of the league and we'd not be having these conversations.

Of course, you're never guaranteed to get every decent chance and opposition teams would arguable have equally good chances to score too. But maybe it shows that we're not a million miles away even through the obvious frustrations.

xG can be misleading. Our xG improves every time we cross it into the box. We crossed it 26 times against Cheltenham, almost once every 3 minutes.

Only 4 crosses were successful and most of the time we only had Taylor in the box when the cross went in.

They were clearing it with absolute ease but I guess we had a better xG at the end?

Not quite. It's not just the crossing but the likelihood that they would lead to a goal. 22 unsuccessful crosses wouldn't improve our xG anymore than 22 shots from distance that only worry the crowd.

It does, because it can lead to knock downs, passes in the box, blocked shots. We make an awful lot of half these half chances but we're usually up against 11 men behind the ball thanks to slow build ups.

That is categorically not true. xG only comes from a shot, which in itself is a flaw because it doesn’t register goalscoring oops where the shot doesn’t come. But xG doesn’t flinch from a cross unless it leads to a shot.

No, because he can get us promoted. He’s taken us to two play-offs, and I’m sure in time will take us up.

Don’t be thankful for the xG, I’m just using that to show how many chances we’ve created this season, be thankful for the goals we’ve scored under him and the style in doing so.

And a blocked shot from a headed clearance with 11 men behind the ball? Registers on xG. We make plenty of those but they're so easy to defend.

Yes, it will register a very low value. We won’t be topping the xG table due to Henry pop-shots.

Just watching the EFL show on Quest. Majority of goals come from working the ball into feet inside the box. Our striker hasn't touched the ball inside the box since the 30th minute of the previous game.

We are great at keeping possession but we need some serious work in the final 3rd. Taylor totally isolated and feeding on awful crosses.
I’ve not seen the away games but I don’t think I’ve seen Whyte deliver a meaningful cross at all. Our best crossers are Forde and Henry, maybe we need to try one of them wide.

How sure are you? And when will this happen? And you are willing to believe this because we have created chances?

Good God! Chances don't get us promoted. Chances don't equate to goals. Chances don't win games.

When are you folk going to wake up? We've had chances. We failed to take them. We didn't score. We didn't win. We didn't get promoted.

It's not bloody rocket science.

This is the mentality that Robinson drums into us. That we were the better team, that we dominated, that he's proud of his team, that the fans are great, that we are building something, that we are standing by our style of play.
He might be a very nice chap and firm exponent of humanitarian methods but, he doesn't win enough games. He doesn't get us promoted.
He doesn't send Mrs Lounger and myself home after a game feeling happy having lost.

He’s got us into the playoffs twice, which I imagine would have been his objective in his yearly appraisal. Maybe you didn’t see the earlier home games but we certainly started well. But he relies on incredible runs and perhaps this year his luck will run out.

He’s taken us to the play-offs in back-to-back seasons, if he continues to get us finishing in the Top Six then chances are we’ll go up fairly soon.

You paint it as if I’m gullible to his bluster, but it’s the actual results which suggest we’re getting it right when you look past the last week.

True - perhaps the manager should play him on the right wing given he’s right footed, might help.
Yes, he’s been a shadow of what we know he can be. But he should be able to make a better fist of playing on the left, as he’s such a good player.

When Man U resigned Ronaldo did they play him in the position he was most effective or did they put him at left back and go he is such a good player he should be able to give that a go? Mental to sign players to play them out of position, if we wanted a left winger sign one, not try and convert a right winger (also goes for trying to turn centre midfielder ms into right backs etc).

I am really glad that someone has had the balls to comment on our current style of play. I, for one, am really fed up with all the ‘tippy tippy’ stuff. It IS ineffective if you are not good enough to make proper use of it and in league one, it’s a style of football that borders on arrogance. We are not Man City !!!
You're a Wycombe fan, as evidenced by your previous posts. If anyone's unsure, click on his name and posting history, it's all there.

Come on for a gloat because we lost have you? Think you're being clever, by saying "we" and having a "local" name? Tell you what, I'd rather watch our style of football, whether it succeeds or not, than the cheating histrionics from your mob, and your fat cheerleader, all day every day. No wonder you can only get about 4,500 home fans at most and have to come on another club's message board to try to feel good about your nothing club.

It doesn't matter what results Wycombe get, you're a sad loser, and clearly not a very bright one either.
