That is all fine if we don't bring other players in. But if we sold Atkinson and brought 3 or 4 others in, extended existing contracts and developed a squad to aim for the top 2, would you be happy?
Hostage to fortune mate. If we start the season with children in defence and sign a crocked Irishman on the Friday before Cambridge I’ll join the pitchfork mob.

Reasonable business. He’s by no means the finished article. I still shudder at the monstering Simms gave him in the playoffs.

I assume the sell on clauses are decent. If the asking price is being met and the players wages are likely being tripled then he’s going to go.
Whatever any of us
might want Rob Atkinson to do.

Plus er there’s still a pandemic on. And no clear path yet about what capacities are going to be in 21/22.

it’s frustrating, it’s painful but it’s where we are in the food chain.

I trust that the money will be used wisely. Not more wingers please.

Whilst also investing more of the fees they receive back into players, hence last season when Toney went there was a quality replacement waiting in the wings. Also, would Peterborough see lcp as a first team starter, having just signed his first professional contact. He may well do one day, when he is ready.

Have you seen LCP play lots of games and make lots of mistakes like you did with Jack Stevens? Also, last season you were moaning about having an untried and untested Rob Atkinson in the team after getting rid of Dickie!!

If there's every something to give me confidence, it is seeing the club do the exact opposite of what you suggest!!

Absolutely right we have got to keep selling strikers are worth more that's the way of the world. I think what's very important is to get Moore's contract extended and there's alot of shopping to be done yet. We must stay patient we always end up with some great loan players and some end up hear permanently . We've had two great seasons and still people moan . Iam sure there's alot going on and I would think there will be another signing tomorrow and maybe other good news .

3-4 quality signings, extended existing contracts and a squad built to aim for the top 2 would obviously make everyone very happy, but that's all hypothetical.

THE FACTS:

We've lost our number one LB

We've brought in a player (Williams) who so far, from the many times I've seen him play, has only ever shown himself to be average.

We've brought in a forward (Bodin) with an atrocious injury record, who's hardly played for 2-3 seasons.

We already have a complete crock up front (Winnall)

We've also brought in a player (Mcguane) who looks like he'll be a great signing, but is currently unsure himself, weather he'll be fit to start the season.

We're on the verge of selling our potentially most valuable player (Atkinson) for well below what he's worth or will be worth in a years time, with only a 35 with a dodgy knee, and a kid with zero experience as back up to our one and only remaining fit senior CB.

We've also got an excellent RB who badly injured his hamstring 3 times last season, due to being run into the ground, because we didn't provide enough suitable cover in key positions.

We've got Jamie Hanson!

Atkinson is being bought now because his ceiling could be anything really, but in terms of how replaceable he is today, I’d be confident we could bring someone in of similar ability. Chances are they’ll be a bit older and won’t have the potential he does, but the game here is to make the team and the balance sheet stronger.

Does selling him help allow us to bank some cash, bring in a replacement CB, a better LB than Ruffels and a better winger than Barker/Shodipo? It probably does.

Is it realistic to hold people back from dream double your salary, compete at a higher level, maximise your potential, path to the Premier League type transfers when you’re Oxford United in League One? Sorry, it really isn’t no.

For a relative comparison, Im sure Dortmund wished they lived in a world where they could hold onto Sancho, Pulisic, Dembele, Aubameyang and really compete with Bayern. They can’t.

No, but they held on to most of them until they were ready and it suited them rather than just the player. Nearly all of them ideally wanted to leave 6-12 months before they did - Sancho’s transfer saga has rolled on since last summer and Aubameyang was linked with a move for more than a year before he left - but the club’s stance was, “You will go when it’s right for you to go, for everybody including us.”

I’m not saying this is what I think OUFC should do (although I’m also not NOT saying that), merely commenting on your point. Probably easier to push back like that when the players are already earning millions of pounds a year, compared to Atkinson who is probably on about 100k a year and is having three times that dangled in front of him, as well as a contract that lasts a good four years.

THE FACTS

Rob Atkinson hasn't been sold yet, and a fee hasn't been agreed. Last season many were saying Dickie went for about £1m when it was actually £1.9m + add ons. You also have no idea on who is being lined up as a replacement.

The players only started back in training today. This is when we'll start bringing players in on trials or to finalise deals. We will be signing several more players.

Our number one left back faced criticism on here most of the season. He has got a great contract elsewhere and good luck to him, but we have been looking at very good replacements (Ogilvie, Tomlinson, Robson etc)

Bodin is a cheap gamble, but one that could pay off. Williams is a very solid league one player. McGuane will be able to have a full preseason so no reason for him not to be ready in time August.

Long, Winnall and Mous have all been in training for weeks and will all be ready to start preseason.

There are plenty of positives if you try looking for them!

Wrong. Atkinson is now done. Expect it to be confirmed tomorrow or over the weekend at a push.

You're probably right, but that doesn't mean that it is at the price being quoted or that we haven't got other deals done ourselves.

Sounds like they met our valuation of 2 million. Now the question is how well will that be spent on the rest of the squad. Kerr & Robson signing ASAP after the sale would certainly appease fans.

Why were BCFC not pursuing Atkinson when we bought him? Could have saved themselves 1.6 mil?
Oh, I don’t know, perhaps because he’s developed as a player while here?

You could make that argument about every player.
