The Euros. How will England do?

The Euros will be a social occasion. Christ knows we've been starved of these!

Who cares if you don't know a few of the players? Just pretend it's the start of the real football season! (When you can't remember if it's the lad on loan from Norwich or the promising one from Bromley)

Don't get too attached though, it's going to kick you hard in the B*****s.

What colour do we play in again?

There seems to be some competition on here to be the coolest, most football hipstery “God I don’t even care about England/Premier League football any more, you know” while cornering some poor girl at a party and going on to explain that she doesn’t truly understand music as she doesn’t only listen to Morrissey and the Smiths

Personally I’m going to embrace it - it’s summer, we can have friends round for barbecues, get the games on, enjoy it! May as well try and wring some enjoyment out of life where you can. Plus England have players like Grealish, Mount and Foden who are young and are winning best young player / best player plaudits for not just their clubs but also the league, and we also have the top league’s top goalscorer and top assister in one player! (Kane should have been POTY for me)

Having said that, Southgate will no doubt be boring, not play Grealish but rather his favourites like Stirling and we’ll go out at the last 16

I'm looking forward to the tournament, it's nice to have football on during the day throughout the summer and a chance to see teams I wouldn't usually.

Regarding England I'm quite fortunate I think. I have an interest in the games and want us to win, I loved the atmosphere around the country during 2018, but at the same time when we lose I don't really care so best of both worlds. After we lost to Croatia I was over it within 10 seconds and we'd have been pumped by France anyway, and I cheered when we took the lead against Iceland in 2016 and pissed myself when they scored 2. The trick is to have realistic (low) expectations then you won't be disappointed. If you're basing your enjoyment of the tournament on a team that is desperate to get Harry Maguire fit because he's our best option by a mile and will probably be starting Pickford in goal then you're setting yourself up for a kick in the balls.

I've said it before but the run to the semis of the World Cup was beyond jammy with the draw we had. Beating Tunisia, Sweden and Panama doesn't make us a great team, plus we needed extra time and penalties to get past a bang average Colombia. I just hope Southgate isn't as negative this time and we have some fun, it's taken him ages to even give Grealish a call up despite it being obvious he's one of our best players, he needs to start as well for a kick off.

I'm sure I will enjoy watching some football over the summer. It won't have the emotional clout of watching us of course, but it'll be fun.

I don't think England will do very well. Too many individuals, not enough of a team. Not sure that the inclusion of injured players or those that haven't played for ages in the squad (where have we seen that before?) is a brilliant idea, but we'll see.

I love international tournaments, much better than no summer football. I don’t follow football as avidly as when I was a kid but I still watch the premier league and support England as well Oxford, would be made up if England won a tournament in my lifetime.

There is not a limit on what you can enjoy, it doesn’t make you an Oxford United superfan if ours are the only games you watch, just means you don’t know a lot about modern football.

Yellow

I don't really follow the England players but I always get excited before a tournament. I heard we were favourites with France earlier but I'm sure that's down to over optimistic gamblers.

That said, I'll be well excited when we win our group and get to the knockout stages. Maybe this year will be the year.

I remember my lad's face when we beat Wycombe to go up in 2016. I'd love to see that again with England winning a tournament.

I'm sorry to be negative but does anyone really believe that England can do well this time?! Injuries, a very unbalanced squad, negative leadership and tactics from Southgate....look at Germany last night, poor opposition yes but 7 goals, attacking football, and making the most of the talents they have, and thats a team that could well not get out of their group!
And if Southgate doesn't play Mount, Grealish and Foden all together then he deserves to be vilified and sacked. I'd love to be proved wrong but I think this could be worse than 2016!🤦🏽

Pickford
James Stones White Chilwell
Rice
Mount Grealish
Sancho Kane Foden

or you could swap Grealish and Foden round, throw Rashford in there:

Pickford
James Stones White Chilwell
Rice
Mount Foden
Rashford Kane Grealish

Or, if none of our pacier wingers are firing, keep them on the bench to run at teams and start with:

Pickford
James Stones White Chilwell
Rice
Mount Bellingham
Foden Kane Grealish

We might not win the tournament but at least we’d play exciting, attacking football and go at teams. I’d rather that than a turgid 0-0 and go out on penalties again.

The first of those is what I'd play, just with Foden and Grealish the other way round. I'd definitely start Foden, Grealish and Mount all together and go for it. I'd play both Maguire and Henderson if they were fit, but as they won't be I wouldn't bother. Possibly a case for Walker at right back as he's extremely fast at running which would no doubt get us out a hole, but James is a talent and I would be happy to see him start.

I thought Godfrey was unlucky not to get in the squad (I would've had him over Mings). I would've probably taken Ward-Prowse over Phillips as well but other than that I think it'll do.

Looking forward to the tournament, just the right sort of entertainment to herald the end of a pandemic , ( er...)

No doubting England have done excellent players. Think home support will help see us through the group stage and thereafter we have a puncher’s chance.

But 7 or 8 times out of 10, France, Portugal, Belgium etc would leg us over. Why? Our defence is really dodgy. (I’d actually start White if Maguire doesn’t make it. Mings and Coady not up to it.)

Please God we also don’t see Kalvin Phillips or Never Scored Jordan on the pitch.

Finally, anyone know how many knockout games we’ve won in the Euros history that haven’t involved penalties?

Our defence is abit crap but coady isn’t to bad him and stones could do a job but our main threat is further up the field we need the like if Foden Sancho Kane grealish mount on form rashford and sterling should start on the bench we need to be like the old Brazil and out score teams we’re going to win the lot do we have a positive bus for the England team if not we need one lol
Should play 5-3-2, hit teams on the break with Foden and Rashford up front. Kane overrated IMO.

Pickford, James, Coady, Stones, Mings, Chilwell, Rice, Henderson, Mount, Rashford, Foden.

Kane overrated! Have you seen his record*?

*And this by being hampered with playing at Spurs for most of it.
he is Spurs, that's why his record looks good. he should be very careful as to which club he goes to. of course he's good, but he's not as good as some make him out to be. he'll never be as effective for a team as Gareth Bale has been.

Eh?

His goals have made Spurs competitive and got them to a CL Final. Did Bale get Spurs to a CL Final?

Kane would have scored far more playing for a team like Man City.

Looking specifically at the knockout games at the Euros and bearing in mind that the tournament didn't really expand until the 1980s and 1990s, England have won only one match outside of a group stage without needing penalties since the first iteration of the tournament in 1960. That was a third place playoff against the USSR in 1968. The game against Spain in 1996 was their only other win in the knockout stage of the Euros.

Is that the same Gareth bale that hasn’t really made any impact in the last two seasons who it is believed will also be retiring in the summer where as Kane is reaching his peak

You’re talking about a guy who was the PLs top scorer AND top assister this season. Someone who has won multiple golden boots - at club level and internationally. You’re either on a wind up or completely clueless!! Kane is our best player and frankly our only hope of winning the thing is if he’s on form

England were the 8th most skilful side at the 2018 WC, only got to the semi-final due to an easyish draw. Played off the park by Belgium. If Kane was playing for Man City the goals and assists would be spread around more.
